YAVP feeble caster conduct
Winning a fully melee-oriented character is considered mundane, so why not try the opposite? I forged a simple rule: only skills from the second skill column may be trained; can use all weapons to avoid some tedium, but still experience a fragile glass-cannon mage. Too bad I didn't choose Deep Elf, but Gargoyle, which turned to be a fraud. Why?
GrEE is a decent tank even with 0 fighting, armour and dodging. I never felt underpowered and hardly ever went below half of my HPs. I could easily cast spells in a +5 randart ring mail, so I definitely was not as defenseless as intended first (30AC+ before first rune). Staff of earth is not a weapon of gods, but nevertheless supported me against popcorn well. Also, thanks to all saved exp, Shatter was castable just before my first rune, which I praised after getting encircled by nagas on rune level. An alternative to snake pit were shoals, which did not look tempting with 9 EV and ~80 HP. I did not postpone the watery realm for too long, though, and descended there right after snake pit. None of shoals' flying creatures is truly dangerous and shatter handled the rest. After unmemorable V1-4 and U1-5 I decided to grab the third rune from slimes. Shatter was useless, but high-power LRD shrapnel quickly changed TRJ from pulp into... pulpy pulp? Or something like that.
I decided to win a 15-runner mostly because I felt the game is too easy and I proved nothing, but with Kryia's armour from Slimes I expected that I will not find any challenge anyway. I was wrong - V:5 was a bit tricky. I avoided using shatter and LRD to not wake the whole level, but Earth magic lacks other good area-of-effect spells, so I had some issues with mana. I had to rely on ambrosia in the first section I chose to clear due to seemingly never-ending wave of enemies, but after that all efforts to stop me from grabbing the silver rune were laughable. Tomb was trivial. To be honest, I believe the extended would be far more pleasurable (pleasurable in the first place, easier in second) if torment dealt only that much of damage to any species.
For Pan and Hell I have added one rule - all big guys have to die. Lom succumbed to LRD alone(!), Gloorx and Mnoleg - to combination of LRD and LCS. Cerebov did not want to die to either of these spells and I started to worry, but eventually managed to kill him with small support of his clone. I also really appreciated having Kryia's armour, as I had to heal few times in that fight. On my way to hell I found abyssal rune in a holy vault. LRD is a perfect tool against shielded angels, but considering the noise I made it took me a while to kill every nearby abyss denizen before I could escape into the Depths. Hell encounters were mostly funny. I felt nigh invincible, because I could kill every devilish adherent with two, three LCSs at most. Asmodeus and Dispater collapsed quickly. Antaeus was tougher, but I overwhelmed him with a huge wave of spiders. Eventually I supported little creatures with spells when big guy regained his pace and started to hack through my friends. The biggest challenge of the game was the fight against Ereshkigal, who forced me to abuse box of beasts, as I could not overcome her alone due to her silence and self-heal.
To sum up, the challenge wasn't a challenge at all, but the game was really enjoyable. If I played this character normally, I would grab few levels in each of fighting/staves/armour/dodging/shields just because they are extremely cheap and would make the game more smooth, but the only skill I seriously missed was Fighting, as 120HPs in the end is not a very comfortable amount.
