CIP OgWz - advice required

Hi.
This guy so far was quite successful in escaping the death despite the fact that i am so bad in this game. The idea behind this character was to somehow get haste and statue form online and make oka give something nice. I think my defenses are somehow bad - no dragon armor so far, i cannot use shield since my good weapons are double handed. This leaves dodging and fighting as main defensive skills.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

You should be able to find a swamp dragon armor in the Swamp, no problem. Your defenses are indeed pretty weak, so it definitely pays to be careful.

Switch to the giant spiked club soon. It should be quite a bit more powerful than the dire flail at this point - I'd try to split training between M&F and Dodging to get closer to mindelay with the GSC. Maybe you could use one of the great maces until you get to 22-23 M&F or so, it's hard to tell which would be the better option. The great mace of draining would weaken most enemies, which might be particular important with your defenses.

I'd say that with a wand of hasting, going for Haste would be absolutely wasteful. Statue form would also be a bit of a waste. Even if I wanted to go into extended, I'd want at least one Transmutation or Earth manual before considering it.

Yeah, thinking about statue form or haste is really putting the cart before the horse. You got a lot of HP but low AC/EV (as is often the case with ogres at least for a while).

I think I'd put a little more XP into the spells you have. Even with your apts the first few levels are cheap and will give a quick boost to spell power and casting success. Then I would focus on dodging and getting a giant club to mindelay.

EDIT: Identify your wand of digging.

regarding the mindelay - the GSC is already at mindelay with heroism, so I put the priority on training M&F on medium priority(as long as i am not leaving Oka i should have enough piety to support heroism for fights i care). Regarding spells - the meph cloud/conjure flames are pretty much castable even if it is not happening from the first time. I did not really any problem with them
It seems that noone is recommending to train shields, which is interesting

I usually go for GSC min delay without heroism as Oka's gifts are often useful, especially when you don't have good body armour.
Nobody recommends shields because GSC is the best non-artifact weapon in the game.

And shields are the best source of SH in the game.

Not to particularly encourage to play a shield wielding ogre, but Heroism raises shield skill, too, and an eveningstar combined with ogre's strength deals very satisfactory damage.

It's a good idea to use shields if the absolute best armour available is a +2 troll leather armour or something similar. Not very uncommon until late Vaults or Depths when playing ogres. In that case you can a) dive Depths for a dragon corpse, b) count on your superior positioning, game sense and patience or c) embrace your inner hoplite.

If it is a good idea to use shield instead of the best 2h weapon, then other 2h weapons should be removed from the game as useless.
If there is a base item class that is unconditionally the best, then devs screwed up the balance somewhere on the way.

That would be true if the item was usable by any species. Fo can use large shield along with 2h weapon, Og/Tr can use the best 2h weapon, you can treat it as their racial bonus.
