Some observations.

I never played an Abyssal Knight before. I feel like this character is doing well. There have been some pretty nice randart finds. But "Never underestimate the power of your own stupidity" -- I nearly died to Saint Roka, not recognizing how hard he could hit. I feel fortunate that he didn't hit me that hard twice in a row.

Some questions.

Q1. I just cleared Elf 3 and got a nice amulet, but it comes with a dex penalty, and my buckler also has a dex penalty: -8 total, bringing my dex of 11 down to dex 3. I'm currently wearing an ac+2 int+3 hat, but I could switch it out for a randart hat ac+1 dex+4. How bad is it to go around with a dex of 3? I know stat zero is bad; but if I run into a monster casting stat loss, I can take off the amulet in one turn to take care of that. And in the meantime, most mobs don't cast stat loss. So my question is, will I hurt my melee or crossbow effectiveness with a dex that low? Is it best to switch hats, sacrificing 1 ac and 3 int to gain 4 dex?

Q2. I don't have a smash-your-face-in spell memorized yet. Iron Shot and Crystal Spear are available in spellbooks in my stash (Iron Shot shows yellow 9% failure rate, LCS shows deep red 100% failure rate). But I do have my nice randart hand crossbow (+7, velocity), with skill 5. If I buy the Crossbow Manual, I could train that to skill 10 or 11 pretty quick. I've got just under 1000 bolts. I'm guessing that on average a bolt hits about as hard as Iron Shot, and not as hard as LCS. I have hurt a lot of mobs pretty severely, with 2 or 3 crossbow hits. And firing a crossbow is mana free. And the amount of xp it will take to make LCS reliable seems like it will be quite high, compared to a smaller amount to use up the crossbow manual. So, is pushing crossbow training a better strategy than focusing on earth and conjuration, to bring Crystal Spear on line? Or is LCS so good a smasher that it's worth all that training focus?

Q3. Clearing the Elf 3 treasure room, pulling annihilators and high priests, my strategy has been to pull with poison cloud, run away, shoot the one or two that manage to follow through the poison without dying, sticky flame the survivor when it gets adjacent, and then melee with trident of freezing. Poison + sticky + freeze + melee. For the tougher mobs I add a hydra (a couple of times, with bad pulls, two or three hydras). Summoned hydras don't stay long, but they hit nice and hard before they poof. It feels like I'm killing things effectively, and I'm not running low on mana. I can cast shadow creatures, to fill the neighborhood with allies to hide behind if I end up with a really bad pull. I think I can continue to use this strategy for the rest of Shoals, but I'm not confident I can do this on Vault 5. (I think I could, if I could staircase dance, but the sentinels will lock the staircase). Is that right?

Q4. I don't really have much stealth, but I surprised myself by walking right up to several elves without waking them. Since I found a nice +6 dagger of flame, should I train stealth and short blades (using the manual I found in the elf treasure room), to add stabbing to my arsenal? I've played stabbers, and it's pretty fun to take out a hefty mob in one strike. But I am wondering, is it a little late in the game to start training a whole new attack?

Q5. I feel like I'm not making much use of Lugonu. I think that will change, when I level up -- to level 24? -- and go exploring the Abyss; I'll be able to run around, pick up a lot of stuff, and just leave if I encounter anything terribly bad. But in the meantime, I've corrupted one level, and banished one mob. That feels like I'm missing some utility. Is there some Lugonu tactic I'm missing?

Q6. I'm figuring that my endgame weapon wants to be a demon trident of ____. I've got some enchant weapon scrolls and a brand weapon scroll stashed. And maybe there's a Wyrmbane out there somewhere. But in the meantime, do I want to get distortion, since Lugonu will give it to me for free, without unwield penalties? As a damage brand, distortion seems random, and probably sometimes irritating. Is it enough stronger than, say, freeze or flame, to make it worthwhile?

I'll be happy to hear other advice people have, but those are the questions I've got at the moment. Thanks!

"Never underestimate the power of your own stupidity" is still valid. Hoping I might get better boots, I delved into the Ziggurat. Nearly died on the second floor to a swarm of summons. "That's a fluke," I said to myself, "I can make it to probably the 15th floor before I'll have to bail." Nearly died again on the 8th floor. "Nah, you got this," I said to myself. On the 11th floor the last mob and I were both down to single digit hp when he fell. "That's three times in this Ziggurat you have nearly killed your character by pushing too far," I said. "I wonder if you'll be stupid enough to succeed on the next try." So I took the exit, without getting any boots. :(

Some answers to my previous questions.

Q1. I tried both using and not using the +dex hat, and noticed no difference in melee output between having a modified dex of 3 vs a modified dex of 7, both for trident and hand crossbow. On the other hand, in the Abyss a malmutating mob was happy to hit me with a clumsy mutation and get me to dex 0. Fortunately it was just a temp mutation, easily handled by Lugonu-gating out of Abyss, taking off the amulet to get a non-zero dex again, and killing a few random mobs to cure the temp mutation. In the long run, getting a better shield, one without a dex penalty on it, was the real solution.

Q2. I bought the Crossbow Manual and quickly trained crossbows to minimum delay. It happily kills mobs at range: orcs and jellies usually in one shot, deep trolls in three or four shots, fire dragons in five or six shots. On a fire dragon, usually two or three of the shots only cause minor damage and one shot hits for a lot. I now have Iron Shot on line, too, but still not at max power. Already it hits a little harder than a crossbow bolt, on average, though it also takes several hits to kill a tough mob. The crossbow has better range, and is mana-free, though. I could eventually run out of bolts, but I have about 1500 of them right now (at 20 bolts per pound, that's 75 pounds of ammo I'm toting, if the game were still keeping track of encumbrance).

Q3. Summoned hydras are great! It's a little random: you can get a 4-headed hydra or a 12-headed hydra in any one call. But with a deep mana pool and a staff of energy, I can call three of them, and if they're a little wimpy, I just call another one or two if needed. It was fun to watch an 11- and a 12-headed hydra rip through a golden dragon and then a shadow dragon on Vaults 5.

Q4. Using the manual, I trained short blades to 12, and then stealth to 10. That made some difference in moving around. Eventually I trained stealth to 16, which yields 8 pips of stealth. It made clearing isolated mobs in Zot 2 & 3, and Slime 5, pretty easy. The real advantage of 8 pips of stealth is the ability to move around unnoticed in most mobs' line of sight, moving into better position before kicking off an attack.

Q5&6. I've found quite a few enchant weapon scrolls by touring the Abyss. I got my demon trident of freezing to +9, and still had five scrolls. I had gotten a +1 demon trident of poison off a merfolk, and had Lugonu warp it. He buffed it to +3, and then I used the rest of the scrolls to get it to +8. It is a powerful but annoying weapon. The distortion effect fires on nearly every hit, the damage is average to strong, and the damage seems to be unresistable. Overall, then, it causes more damage than the +9 demon trident of freezing, since the freeze only goes off maybe half the time, the damage is mild to average, and some mobs resist cold damage. But distortion sometimes causes blinking, teleporting, or Abyssing. Against popcorn to medium mobs, this hardly matters; you mow through a pack of them pretty fast, and if one of them shows back up in a few minutes just kill him then. But against hard or boss mobs, or boss mobs with a few tough sidekicks, having them blink or teleport makes it harder to control the fight. When you've carefully set it up so that they're all stacked up in front of you, it's uncomfortable to have one or two of them suddenly coming up behind you.

So my overall take on Lugonu:
o a quickblade of distortion would be an immensely powerful midgame weapon, which you could switch out with a ranged weapon as well, but distortion seems too risky for an endgame weapon.
o Escaping to the Abyss is a risky but doable tactic, if you can find a hole to rest up in before you have to go back and face all The Royal Jelly's summons.
o I've hardly used banishing at all. That might be a mistake.

Next up, clearing Zot 4, then going for the abyssal rune.
