Getting back in the swing of things with two fun, quick, no-nonsense ascensions. Both characters had some great luck with weapons / amor.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Found a great mace of draining pretty early, then found Undeadhunter. Not the first time I came across this unrand, but first time I found it on a character that could make use of it. Cleared Crypt using it, for laughs, but really it stood out in Zot when I was two-shotting ancient liches. Those two great maces covered me against most enemies, and just before Zot, where you start seeing a high density of dangerous un-drainable non-undead enemies, Okawaru gifted me that randart great mace of crushing.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

Somewhat unorthodox character in that I went axe + shield. Took a while for a battleax to generate, and I found three broad axes in an early shop and a shield was for sale in another, so I rolled with that. Cleaving with electrocution and distortion brand is great. Strictly speaking, not generally as strong as a demon whip or quick blade with either of those brands, but very fun.

In Zot started having encounters that dragged on dangerously long, due to enemies with rElec and high AC, such that my broad axe (even at +8) struggled to break through quickly. Distortion pulled me through, though. One memorable Orb of Fire got blinked and teleported like ten times and kept coming at me before I managed to abyss it. On the other hand I cleave-banished multiple enemies simultaneously on more than one occasion, as well. Crazy good armor and jewelry options throughout game. Corrupted any level that looked cockeyed at me, banished crap from edge of LOS that I knew would be annoying. Lugonu's still one of the best!

Swapped out Shaolin for the rF+++ ring against an OoF and forgot to put it back on :oops: (Didn't really matter that much with these defenses, though.)


New (to me) stuff I like:
+ Random character names
+ All elemental evokers of a certain type become inert upon use (evocations still OP but this was step in right direction)
+ Ancient rand-altars in early dungeon
+ New (I think?) randart property weighting — I found some artefacts with interesting mixes of properties in the early and mid-game; for both characters tried a few different combinations while getting runes. Eventually found ubergear but until then had to make some choices that were more interesting than usual.

New (to me) stuff I dislike:
+ Entropy weavers — The game already pushes primarily melee characters strongly in the direction of training evocations and dodging regardless of whatever else you are doing. Do we really need another enemy that encourages this?

(Also: How their "word of entropy" stuff works is not obvious, I seriously just thought it was a smite-targetted but non-timered effect, until I looked it up. Keeping track of the timing of WoE was not fun. If we must have an ultra-corrosion effect in game, I'd much prefer an instant attack that requires line of fire. But I also don't think we need an ultra-corrosion effect in Crawl.)

Trying to update to version 18, but wasn't working for some reason. Hope to get it working soon, want to give the new features a go.

Entropy weavers don't have 'chant word of entropy' in 0.18, instead they have 'entropic weave', which is a smite-targeted corrosion but with no timer.

Anyway, I hope people stop bashing Okawaru's gifts...

I was (obviously) unusually lucky with armor in both games. I think Okie was making amends for all the times he treated my character like a thrift store, dumping +0 hats on them and randarts with severely negative enchantment.

Still, I find in most games he gives you *something* that you end up wearing or wielding when you ascend, but sometimes he gives you that thing on Zot:4 :x

Some solid gear. In most of my Oka games I got some really useful stuff, amidst a fear few bits of junk of course.
