Hey all,

my first Wizard to reach this far in the game. I hope i am doing fine skill wise :D. Gonna be very careful with decending further into the Lair. Clearing 2nd level, then make a stash there and go deeper i guess.

Shaping up pretty nicely, some nice items and you found a few nice spells there. You might want to work Tloc up towards Phase Shift for some extra survival ability, and if you find Swiftness you get an extra speed boost with Flight. Poisonous Cloud is great for clearing groups of enemies in Lair and Orc and will get your Vehumet piety up nice and quick so you he'll start giving you some of the bigger guns. Just watch out for hydras and try not to get mobbed by packs of yaks!

Pretty character you have going there. Esp with the resists and spell hunger management (altho with Gourmand, that shouldn't be much of an issue for you now). Some suggestions:

1. You have a source of rP and have found the Hive. You should consider clearing Hive now, instead of more Orc or Lair. KoboldLord taught me the key to pumping Vehmy piety: you want to kill a lot in a short amount of time.

The strength of the enemy is not as important as the number and the speed you kill them.

You are at 4 stars. Clearing the Hive will probably get you to 6. It should certainly start the book drops. Activate your rP, drop in, let the bees charge you. tt if you have to.

When they close in on you, drop a Mephitic on yourself and then Poison Clouds all over the place. You should get dozens of quick kills that way. Whip any bees foolish enuf to actually try meleeing you. (That whip is better than either blade for fighting, but you prolly already know that.)

2. Once you get Vehmy's 1st and 2nd books, you can go Lair hunting. IMB will be huge. But still be very very careful in the Lair. It can get dangerous when you least expect it (esp if you get a bad Slime entrance).

3. Abuse the heck out of Conj Flame. If you see a Hydra, line it up. They drop flame clouds next to it as it walks towards you. After 3-4 clouds, the Hydra should freak out and run away. Back through the flames. Enjoy your xp.

4. You have 2 unidentified wands. You should not have any identified wands. Fire them on the next bat you see. :twisted:

5. You should turn on Stealth and Dodge back on, btw. Getting the first shot is important. And not getting hit in the face is a plus too. Once you get IMB, turn Conj back on til it gets close to Spellcasting. IMB will be your main gun for a while and you want that sucker to hit as hard as it can.

Thanks! my best character so far. I so wanna keep it alive.

Mainly i am using the dagger for the stats, cause in melee they kinda are wasted. The whip hits really really hard tbh, is a nice weapon to have even as a caster. But i started to melee less... just want to be careful with this character as i never came this far hehe.

I could have had loads of food, but i forgot the amulet for some time now *sigh at self*. Just forgot about it after saving the game yesterday and starting again today. Oh well, it will still be nice to have now.

Wasn't sure about stealth and dodge, some people say to leave it off? At least the stealth. Did also find some boots of stealth in the meanwhile, are they even useful? They are in the lair... somewhere... lol

In the meanwhile i did clear the Lair till lvl 8. Only thing i skipped was some death yak at 6 or 7. (death yak not dead yak :D).
Made a nice stash at lvl 2... and now i am off to the Hive (tomorrow).

The people who tell you to turn off stealth and dodging as soon as you start are talking about the super-early game. If you're playing a spellcaster, you want to get your spell skills working as soon as possible by any means necessary. The moment you switch to, say, Throw Icicle for ice elementalists, or Mephitic Cloud for wizards, you start playing a completely different game compared to the one you'd been playing up until that point, and pretty much every sacrifice that makes that moment come sooner is going to be a worthwhile sacrifice.

After around the Temple, your basic defensive passive skills give you a fairly hefty benefit even at fairly low levels of skill, and are way cheaper than the next level of your main damage skill. You should nearly always have dodging and stealth on all the time, or take time to feed them xp in manual mode if you're in trunk. They don't need to obsessively keep up with your main damage skill, and probably shouldn't, but unless you go absurdly overboard they certainly won't be a bad investment.

That's an entirely different question. Stealth-branded armor gives you a static bonus to stealth, which adds up with all your other bonuses to stealth. They're certainly better than no boot ego, but if you're comparing them to other boot brands you have to weigh your needs. If you have boots of running, use those.

Wow never thougth it could be that easy after been dying so often. Walking on my toes all the time though, maybe that is what does make the difference. Anyway, i cleared Hive and Orcish Mines (in Hive level 2 i didnt risk to destroy wax walls that were behind water tiles with sharks, i dont want to die hehe).

Alos got a nice book as god gift, not sure what spells i should start to use though. IMB or the biggest guns there? :D. I do have some scrolls of amnesia stashed so i could unlearn some spells as well.

And where to go next? Early swamp perhaps?

Don't waste those scrolls of amnesia if you have the spell levels; also note that if you have a book which contains the spell you no longer want to have memorized and you have no intention of ever learning any other spell from that book, you can look into the book and FORGET the spell, which destroys the book and removes the spell from memory.

I've found that attitude to be very important in Crawl. Every time I think my little guy is so powerful that he can just stomp the place, he dies. Overconfidence is a bad trait to have in Crawl. If you are always terrified of everything, then you have a much higher probability of ascending, imho! :mrgreen:

Spellwise, you want one elemental attack (because they do more damage) and one pure magic attack like IMB (because sometimes you run into something that resists your elemental attack). Can you cast level 6 spells w/o hunger? Or low hunger? If so, dump Magma Bolt for Fire Bolt or Poison Arrow. Poison Arrow hits hard. Even against things that have rP. Don't underestimate it. (But don't overestimate it either...)

Your next goals should be to get Swiftness (with Flight, you move at Spriggan speed), Repel Missiles (obvious reasons), and Control Teleport (that allows you to use Blink in a semi-controlled fashion -- i.e., you can choose the direction with about 80% reliably -- test this a lot before you use it in actual combat to get familiar with how it works). Basically, these are spells to improve your defenses. Set macros for Flight + Swiftness and Repel when you get them and just activate them constantly.

With rP, you can handle Swamp but watch out for Alligators. They move incredibly fast in water, will ambush you, and can kill a caster in 1 or 2 rounds. If you see them, run. Cloud them from afar if you want to try to kill em. Use a Blink scroll if you have to. They are that scary.

Re Sharks. You can poison them with P Cloud btw. So what if they dive underwater. They're still poisoned. :twisted:

I would try Swamp (carefully). If anything looks bad, bail and go deeper down the main dungeon. If you get Repel, then you can take on Elf 1-4 using Poison Cloud (drop it in a corridor and run away -- Elves follow and die).

You also need to get that Fighting up. To 10 if you can. Going forward, your rule should be to melee every rat, bat, gecko, basic snakes, and jackal. Maybe even Orcs if they aren't using glowing weapons. Your spellcasting is OK for now and you need to get that extra hp.

Last thing. If you see a unique, your default rule should be to set and exclusion and leave it alone until you level up at least once. You probably won't have to do this with every unique--you could probably take many right now. But playing it safe will keep this little elf alive a lot longer...

Not sure whats wrong with my fighting, i did melee many orcs, many bees, many other stuff, even now in swamp and it won't increase from lvl 3 (75%).
I did disable other skills now to make sure i keep exp in the pool for fighting see if it helps.

EDIT: now it went up suddenly, guess that did the trick.

Also got my first rune :O. OMG!!!!

I have been very cautious all the time, and that attitude did save me once or twice. When i entered the Swamp, it looked all easy and that. Crocodile here, Alligator there. They were made easy targets by my magma bolts. Though the steam is annoying lol.

I also found alot of uniques, i think it were 4 on the 1st level. When i faced the 1st i walked back to the stairs and then on max range i did confuse it. SPLASH! dead he was lol. Same thing for the other 3 lmao. No loot but i did live :D.

At some point i faced some hydras, and was suprised by 2-3 at the same time with low MP. RUUUUUUUN! Good thing i had some teleport scrolls with me. At one point i had to go upstairs and take one with me... used a scroll of fear and could regen enough MP to kill it. fwew!

Last level wasn't that bad, i had to run a few times but without going under 50% HP ever. Nuke, run back upstairs, regen. Spam some scorpions to take back down, and nuke some more, repeat if needed.

Then i found the rune! Wooohooo :).

congratulations to the rune!
why do you carry 6 immolation scrolls? just asking :)

i'd suggest you re-enable dodging, always good to have, even as a caster.
you should learn abjuration, its very helpful when encountering any sort of summoner.

otherwise the character is looking great. maybe you can add orb of destruction or mystic blast to your spell list to get some spells against elemental immunes (should be in your god gift books).
maybe establish a stash somewhere, not much sense in carrying that much stuff around. the str+4 ring is also suboptimal for a caster, you'll want int and/or wizardry there.

if you have sInv somewhere you should be good for elf, otherwise continue until you find it (dungeon may also be dangerous without due to unseen horrors).

Hmm not sure about the scrolls, i just use to pick them up. Think i found 3-4 in the Swamp and had some on me allready. And keep them close, cause i think they can save me. Maybe... lol. But they will hit me too though.

Gonna re-enable dodge after i get a bit more exp in my pool and get fighting up a bit more. Thought it was bugged but was just super slowish.

Think i do have sInv on a dagger i got stashed in Hive or Lair, need to check it up. Thx for the advices will keep you guys updated!

BE CAREFUL WITH THAT ROBE OF CLOUDS

Assuming you have a stash of items, swap it out for a regular robe when visiting your stash and do not rest at your stash while wearing it.

It could potentially create a deep water pool from which you have ZERO ability to retrieve your items without transmuting into something that can swim.

Darn died in the elven halls on lvl 5 i think it was :(. First few levels were easy, then the harder elfs came in view. Was able to kill a few, but one spawned some nasty very very fast demons who finally got me :(.

But it was a good game and learning :).

Elf:5 is the last level of Elf and consequently much harder. I've died there numerous times...

There's a little spell at the top of your book list called "Abjuration" that you really should look into and always have memorized.

I couldn't disagree more on this. You are guaranteed to see a ton of summons on Elf 5, Crypt, and Zot. if you have any spellcasting skill at all, it's worth dropping a few thousand exp into summoning to be able to effectively cast abjuration. Abjuration is a full screen nuke spell against all those executioners that the lich just summoned, and it's a great lead in to shadow creatures, which is worth it for Zot alone. If you are casting spells at all, the two you should learn, above all others, are swiftness and abjuration.

I guess you're right on how often you use it, but it's a pretty low cost spell when you think about what you get for 3 slots.

That's if you only count summoning and charms. If you add in spellcasting levels, then it's far cheaper. If you cast spells regularly, you only really need 2 or 3 levels in Summoning to get abjuration working well.
