My First Win - MiBe - 3 Runes
As my first post in this forum, I figured to share my first win recently with a Minotaur Berserker in version 0.18.1. This took me so many tries to finally do, but I finally did and I'm very proud of myself. This playthrough has quite a few highlights.
For one thing, I couldn't find even one Wand of Heal Wounds anywhere through out the entire game. To compensate for this, I used a Vampiric weapon to hopefully keep my health up. During the game I found quite a few useful artifacts. I had an artifact Crystal Plate Mail for most of the game but I decided to switch it for some Gold Dragon Armor for the bonus to rF and rC. Combined with the artifact ring I had, that gave me two pips of each!
My first two runes were from the Swamp and Snake Pit. I choose the Abyss as my third rune, and I had to clear out all of Depths in order to become powerful enough to enter the Abyss. I also cleared out the top four levels of Vaults. Once in the Abyss, it was straight forward, although the rune vault took a long time to show up, even on Abyss:3.
With three runes collected, it was time to tackle Zot, and I pretty much had an easy time on the first four levels. Zot: 5 was a killer though. On my way to the Orb of Zot there were a good deal of Ancient Liches, Orbs of Fire, and other nasty enemies. One Ancient Lich managed to hit me with a Crystal Spear spell. Fortunately I was able to make it to the Orb.
Then came the most exciting and terrifying part of the game for me, the orb run. On my way out of the orb vault, there was an Orb of Fire and Shadow Fiend blocking my exit. The Shadow Fiend repeatedly cast Torment on me, and in the process of staying alive I used up all the Potions of Heal Wounds I had at the time. I also used a Potion of Resistance, which gave me a full three pips of rF and rC combined with my equipment. I did that so i could hopefully survive the constant fireblasts the Orb of Fire hits me with. I managed to escape though by using a Scroll of Summoning. It brought out a Gold Dragon, which helped clear the path. However after that more Ancient Liches came into view, and at one moment my health was down to the single digits. I just barely escaped Zot:5 and the way back through Zot was scary, as I forgot to clear out the enemies on some levels. Potions of invisibility saved me though. Good thing Draconians can't see invisible.
Once out of Zot and back in Depths, it was a lot less intense, since I did clear all five levels of Depths. It was smooth sailing after that for the most part, and I was able to book back to Dungeon:1 and to the exit. On my way there are a few monsters, including two Pan Lords, which I managed to kill. There was a third but he was summoning a lot so I just ran away and up some stairs. Needless to say, that was very exciting. Don't know how I did it, but I did it. A major accomplishment for me, as Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup was the second Roguelike game I managed to win. It definitely makes you feel good about yourself. With that, that ends the tale.
