Man that took a lot of attempts. Entire run was recorded; I didn't talk quite as much this run as my girlfriend was home for most of it and talking to your computer for 5 hours is just weird. As for the winning run it wasn't really that unusual, I did find statue form rather early on, found chei rather late (D:9), but fortunately was able to build up piety and learn statue form around the end of lair (I ran orc before lair). Was the first time I did this speedrun ordering with tomb as my third rune, after the two lair branches I went to vaults1:4->crypt->tomb-Vaults:5->depths. Tomb that early on did have some nasty fights, but I was able to pull through it with a -lot- of stair dancing. In hindsight stair dancing with a zot trap right next to the stairs isn't the safest thing to do, but I got away with it. Slow from scarabs was very dangerous a couple of times. Pan took a while to find the demonic rune, finding all four unique runes first, but eventually I did. Pan also dumped me onto Cerebov's floor right out of the gate when I only had rF+, which I think was fairly mean. Still managed to take him out in about 10 turns or so, which is about what all the unique lords took. Chei + statue form + VS bite is really incredible damage, and anti-magic certainly doesn't hurt. None of the bosses really stood up for long, which is probably good when you can't heal anyways.

My goal was 40k turns, and while I'm technically 133 turns over that, I consider that to be a hit

It's a personal high score, and imho pretty respectable time all around. I could probably take a lot of time off of it if I ever managed to break my autoexplore addiction, but that'll probably never happen. I'll leave the actual records and species high scores to others...As of this win, it's the 196th highest scoring game, so hey, top 200 run

Chei isn't a handicap when it comes to speedrunning, the time each turn takes doesn't matter, only the number of actions performed. Chei was used for the #2 score of all time, 4thArraOfDagon's VSMo, only behind Sapher's DDWr of Makhleb. 4th did it in 19225, and tabstorm who I talked to about the run and drew inspiration from did it in 27,294 turns. My score's certainly not nearly as impressive as those runs are, but I'm not that experienced with speedrunning and was only trying to go for a "better than all my previous games" speedrun

It's been a while but I did look up all of the species high score games, count which gods they used, and I'm fairly sure chei was the most common god choice. It's something of an arbitrary metric, but in any case, the +15 strength is a huge damage increase that is always active and really helps lower your turn count.

Did you find later-game easier with this branch order?

Tomb was fairly tough at 20, but by the time I got to Pan it was easy, yes. About the only scare I had was fighting Cerebov with rF+ (rF++ with potion of resistance). Towards the end of the fight I had ~50 hp and he had burned away one resist, so taking a firestorm at rF+ could have nearly killed me. The rest of the lords didn't really have much of a chance of killing me, especially since I could use temporal distortion to bring Lom Lobon into melee range. Antimagic defangs a lot of the uniques.

I'll add control undead and controlled blink to my spell wishlist if I do more speedruns. C. Undead is common, but Cblink would save a lot of turns if you get lucky with it...
