CIP: Sword of Jihad for DgSu?

This DgSu has had some very lucky finds before Lair: +5 gloves rPois, a staff of energy, robe of resistance, four scrolls of blinking that I've saved my skin with, and now the Sword of Jihad. I think this is a good weapon, as long as I remember to summon first before attacking--or is this sword a trap? If I should use it, I don't think it's time yet to train Long Blades, since my summons killdudes is doing fine right now.

I've had trouble (hence the four ?Blink) with getting surrounded. D:10 was wide and open, and then on Lair:1 just now there were about 20 total sheep and river rats. What is it about my novice summoning tactics that is making this happen? I don't remember getting surrounded this often with melee characters.

Well, if Jihad actually enrages your summonings keep wielding it? Seems like a nobrainer. Obviously only attack with it if you were fine with getting berserked, inscribe !a to prevent accidental attacking.

Warning terrible advice: If you wanted to ruin your character on a gamble, eat mutagenic meat and try to get clarity - clarity and Jihad are a lot of fun.

As far as I remember tavern people claim it is one of the best weapons for extended but personally I believe it is a trap extended or not.

The thing that concerns me the most is not the berserk itself, since I have control over whether to attack in the first place. It's the 10% chance of paralysis afterwards that I have no control over that really worries me.

The hunger concern is an issue too, though I have the staff of energy for spamming Summons (I'm paying attention to this because my last summoner a TeSu ran out of food). The 600 satiation for berserking would be reported as ####### spell hunger! If I use this a lot, will food become scarce?

you can always just berserk against only enemies that turn into food

Yeah Iv'e figured out that the food isn't an issue, and even though I've gotten paralyzed a few times I just make sure to not start swinging until I've reasonably sure of ending the fight before my berserk times out (if it happens).

Just equip a different weapon when berserking is dangerous enough to get you killed.

After Lair:8 I went back to Dungeon, but I got stopped at D:13. There is a vault with Rupert and a ring of humans around the Vaults portal. I don't have the MR for Rupert right now, so I went back up. There's also an ice dragon vault in Lair and I can't defeat it, either; fortunately it's patrolling its vault and I can bypass it. So I'm in Spider now (Shoals is the other) and it's going okay only because I found Minor Magic and have Conjure Flame and Mephitic.

I have no idea what I should do next skilling-wise. I have not found a higher Summoning book, though I do have a top Hexes book and mid-tier Necro and Earth books. I've also just found a +10 halberd of pain in Spider. I've not fsim'd it against the Sword of Jihad yet. I've been pumping all my attribute gains into INT. So here are the options I see:

  1. Transition to melee/Summoning Hybrid with buckler and Sword of Jihad
  2. Transition to melee/Summoning/Necro with no shield and halberd/Jihad
  3. Add Earth or Hexes to my spellset and stay pure caster with Jihad and buckler
  4. Add Necro to my spellset and stay pure caster with halberd/Jihad and no buckler
  5. Keep pumping my Summoning starting book as I have room to grow Ice Beast and Spire in spell power, and wait see whether something Summoning drops.
  6. Something else?
