It should probably get harder once i get to the mage backgrounds. People say mages have lower win rates than melee, right? They are probably not talking about quick low HP races though. But still, i have no experience with mages online. Also, watch me lose a FeSu to Ctrl-Q.

I don't know win rates, but certainly most book backgrounds are stronger than melee ones (basically anything isn't Tm, Wr, VM, perhaps Sk and AM), and for a Fe they're definitely *a lot* better than melee ones.

Skald is a pretty bad start, as much as I like spectral weapon. Especially since SW got nerfed.

Even though i called FeEn relatively easy (because it is), i still almost managed to lose with this combo a few times. Shamefur dispray.

It all started at D:4 when i snuck up to an ogre, stabbed him, barely missed the kill (i've been training exclusively UC and Stealth at that point) and got one-shot from 21 HP. Then i got shafted from D:5 to D:8, used the first upstairs i found and ended up right next to a sleeping Joseph whom i didn't even try to stab (remember me failing to one-shot an ogre?). So i had to go back to D:8, and there was a sleeping black bear next to the other upstairs. I stabbed it which brought it to low HP and activated its berserk. Afterwards i proceeded to miss the 65% chance to finish it off with a wand of disintegration (better than Confuse) three times in a row. A lot of consumables were wasted in this fight, and i should thank NicuTudor, a fellow winscummer™, for spectating me and acting as a voice of reason at that moment.

Another entity i should thank for surviving early is actually Fedhas. I decided to be boring and pick this deity on D:2, and mushrooms did in fact pull their weight. I had little to no idea what to do with other stuff the plant god provides: oklobs were a bit disappointing and spores from Reproduction didn't confuse uniques for nearly as long as i hoped. I didn't come up with creative uses for Rain and Sunlight either. So, i was planning to try and make a switch to Jiyva late Lair but didn't find the altar. "Never lucky again," i thought. And only later on, when i had two runes and came back to Lair:8 to get that XP from dire elephants, i realised i had excluded the door that Jiyva altar with an entrance to Slime was hiding behind because "it must be some kind of vault, i should enter it later". Pretty dumb of me but i don't think i would've actually survived Fedhas' wrath had i made the switch that early. For the most part, its wrath just randomly deals damage to you, and my HP pool could've just been too low to endure that. In the late game though, Jiyva with its good mutations, power of one-shotting ancient liches, frequently summoned slime allies and a free rune was pretty awesome, much better than the god i didn't ever bother with at that point.

Enchanter's starting kit was doing pretty well until i had to do rune branches (Spider and Swamp) but the game was not giving me any more stabbing tools so i found myself unable to kill ghost moths and deal with hydrae realiably. After grabbing the gossamer rune with an invisibility potion i entered Vaults and found a book with Invisibility literally next to a pack of sleeping skeletal warriors which i would've avoided without that spell. The game definitely became much easier with that but i still died twice while trying to do Vaults. One death actually occured in the Wucad Mu's WizLab where i suddenly found out that shadow creatures were too strong for me and the statue of Wucad Mu didn't fall to my berserking cat. It wasn't even close, so i had to leave that place with its awesome loot (an acquirement scroll and a potion of XP, i believe).

Me trying to live the dream and learn Discord before actual good spells like Haste and DMsl or levelling my physical skills up had a lot to do with me dying. Don't get me wrong, Discord itself was alright at dealing with groups of enemies (though i'd still prefer Mass Confusion as it's not as risky, "thank you" so much for removing it) but it took a lot of experience (20 Hexes) to get going and a cat without rMsl/DMsl in Vaults/Depths/Elf is generally a dead cat. I couldn't risk using Discord in the Swamp:4 vault with Learnean hydra and its younger brothers and even fighting them while invisible was quite unsafe, so i had to lure them out and just take the rune.

All in all, this felid turned out to be somewhat underpowered as i only got Confusing Touch, Discord, Haste, DMsl and Silence in addition to my starting book for big impact spells. No good forms, Passwall or translocations besides Apportation. So i had to skip a lot of stuff compared to my normal playthroughs (Swamp and Elf endings, Slime because i switched to Jiyva and Depths:4 which was full of spriggans) and i've died a bunch of times which resulted in me entering Zot at XL 20. For once i actually cleared Zot:1—4 almost entirely because i needed experience and my hexes were very good against draconians. The Orb got ninja'd again, though not quite as smoothly as last time since i had only a single scroll of blinking for translocations. It turned out that even a felid could stand next to five Orb Guardians with haste, agility, Ozocubu's up and spammable heal wounds. And not die. Really, game.

So yeah, this is still a streak, and i'm going to take another break before going to mage backgrounds as the whole prospect of playing them confuses me. You might call them good but i don't even have a game plan for them. And i'm not a very flexible player.

So, i got more interested in Crawl again and therefore decided to continue the greatfelid run. Over the past year, devs continued making their game more and more unwinnable, some of the strongest spells in the game (Haste and rMsl) are gone, and soon enough stable players will have to say goodbye to yellow wands. Just about every single win of mine has relied at least on one of those things, so i have absolutely no idea how we will have to deal with late game threats now. These news made me very salty and i even considered never upgrading the game again but the new race and gods are pretty interesting as well as finding the answer to the "how am i supposed to win now?" question. To be fair, my win rate in 0.18 was way too high anyway, maybe the game was too easy indeed. For the purpose of my greatfelid run, i'll still keep playing that version though. Just gotta get it over with and upgrade already.

There's not much special to say about the FeWz i won recently though. I gave up on the god variety and just took a Gozag altar on D:2, then found a book of Misfortune in the early dungeon, abused Confusing Touch/Confuse/Meth Cloud, afterwards purchased Invisibility and abused that, and finally got my hands on Statue Form and abused that spell until the very end. The same thing i always do.
Gozag is quickly becoming one of my favourite gods. He's just so positive and generous. Practically costs nothing at all in the early dungeon you drop at his altar and that chill ass mothertrucker gives you the best buff in the game.
Seriously though, i'd rank him as one of the top 5 gods in the game, somehow i never have problems in my Gozag games if you don't count the first world ones. I can't even exactly explain why because previously he seemed like a worse version of Okawaru to me, and his first ability is not as spammable. I really like how often you can get heal wounds out of it though. And in a world with no haste (0.20), Potion Petition turns into one of the very rare sources of that buff. On top of Potion Petition and almost a certain guarantee to give you the spells you need in book shops, Bribe Branch has let me not fight any orbs of fire in this game. Even though i was prepared for them with Dragon Form.

I can see why at least all-runing cats without the big 3 wands becomes a lot more dangerous. In my most recent 0.19 game, I don't think the recent changes would've made a difference in 3 runes, but all-runing cats without /hasting and /HW would feel a lot worse.

FeCj is actually one of the easier Felids, Fulminant Prism + Force Lance (in 0.20) ensure that nothing approaches you, ever. Anyway, good luck and good job so far.

I've got to say, Fedhas -> Jyiva is an awful idea. You're getting a dangerous god's wrath, setting you up for all sorts of unforeseen deaths. Besides fedhas is a lot stronger than jyiva for a 3 runer, particularly on a stabber. Try fedhas offline and learn its quirks, if you don't believe me.

Thank you. I see people praising Fedhas all the time but whenever i try picking him, it's always a pathetic experience. Doesn't seem like a fun god to learn either. The spores have synergy with stabbing, yes, but the duration of that confusion seems too short. Mushrooms just die constantly even in late Lair. Is he even supposed to be good past the early game or are people calling him good just because mushrooms are OP pre-Lair?

Oklobs obliterate everything in Lair, you can just spawn one and get several messages of feeling more experienced while walking around the level. Lure things to it and you don't even have to attack yourself.

There's the wandering mushrooms, which are available very soon after joining fedhas, where you are at your most vulnerable. At this stage they are really strong. They are relatively cheap, don't expire, and since they don't move while fighting, you can plan your strategies a lot better than with regular summons. Have the mobs chase you around the immobile mushrooms, getting confused and damaged. You move fast, after all.

There's another ability where you have those spore-producing fungus going on an overload, creating more such fungus in a given zone, in a self-perpetuating disaster area of spore explosions. It's a bit tricky to use properly, but it is quite strong. Works well in relatively enclosed areas that mobs have to move through while being wide enough for them to have unobstructed movement across it. Makes lots of noise.

Finally, yes, oklobs, when planted in a properly spaced patch, can devastate even Z5 mobs, if you lure them properly.
Treasure those fruits :) When playing fedhas i usually trade acquirement scrolls for fruit.

Some of these abilities may have changed since I last played that god.

Whoops, didn't realise i took an almost 2 week break after the last cat. Had some stuff to do IRL, was practicing the FeSu start and also wasn't looking forward to playing a mage character online. Not gonna lie, when FeNe popped up as a Nemelex's choice in the tournament, i was actually pretty tempted to play that one. Then i remembered it meant playing 0.20 and wrecking my chances for victory. How about no.

So, spoiler alert: i did streak a FeCj, got 15 runes, cleared a Zig and didn't die at all. But the game could've ended very early due to numerous D:2 adders. After descending to that floor, i explored a bit of it, found two sleeping adders, excluded them and ran out of space to go. So, after using another staircase, i instantly found myself being adjacent to a third adder (!) and a quokka with a weapon-wielding kobold coming up. Then i panicked, wasted a lot of turns (including quaffing 3 potions i found, getting no curing but might and a horns mutation and then not even attacking the snake in melee with those boosts) and survived by some kind of miracle. Afterwards i decided to fight another adder while standing on upstairs, thinking i'd bail if i get low rolls. Welp, i got good magic darts while the snake was approaching me but then rolled low and got lethally poisoned. At least i thought the poison was lethal because my HP bar was fully yellow. As i was stepping forward at very low health, trying to find anything to save me and saying goodbye to my streak, the poison just randomly disappeared at 2 HP. Later i learned that the yellow colour on the health bar is inaccurate and i should've pressed @ or % to see how badly poisoned i am. Honestly though, i played those early game situations horribly, didn't deserve to survive and would've liked a qualified winscummer™ to analyse them. It's stuff like this that separates me from people like zxc and elliptic.

The rest of the early game went relatively smooth: i got a Vehumet altar on D:3 and Iskenderun's Battlesphere... in my starting book because 0.18 is easy. In Lair, i got a cure mutation potion and therefore decided to play mutation roulette. Guess what, i got wild magic 2. Suddenly, i had a powerful mage on my hands and started thinking about getting all runes. Afterwards, i found a couple benemut potions in Elf and upgraded my wild magic level to 3. So, the Fire Storm + 15 runes + Zig dream had to be chased from that point on. Actually, i went into a ziggurat before extended without high level Necromancy/Statue Form/cBlink. I assumed i could clear a mummy floor with 6 lignifications, not sure how true that was because i never even got that kind of floor. Always lucky. Fire Storm still wrecks vanilla (not mega-) ziggurats pretty hard, it barely even matters if you even have HP or defences. Fire vortices are amazing distractions. Oh, and did i mention that my fire storms reached max power with a ring of fire on and Ring of Flames up? I was even considering putting an amulet of harm on for maximum meme value but that that sounds too insane.

Tomb and Pan went alright for me but hells were insanely tedious. Since i couldn't wield a staff of energy and wasn't worshipping (old) Sif, the only way to channel mana for me was a crystal ball of energy and if it emptied my mana pool, i had to just full retreat most of the time. So, the game turned into Sisyphus Simulator 2017 with me taking a ton of tries to actually descend to the last floor of each hell and kill the rune guardian without the ball failing ome. Not fun at all, i wish the game would've just given those runes to me in the ziggurat. At least i also highrolled clarity mutation (thanks to devs once again for removing the amulet!) so i could use CBoE in lich form just fine.

Next felid start is FeSu and, as it turns out, i can't physically stand playing it properly. I did come up with a fun plan for it though. Let's see if it works.

It's hard to see what the options are for FeSu.

You can summon stuff and run away.

Or you can try cat melee with no skill and no help. At least it'll be short I guess.

I could also cast Ozocubu's Armour for 10+ AC and have legit defences. That cat didn't even need to defend though.

So, it's time for the dreaded Felid Summoner. I did some offline testing with the combo, tried to learn the entire starting book, go Sif and kill things with summons. It was an awful experience. Granted, i didn't die before abandoning this character but it felt incredibly weak. Learning level 4 summoning spells took forever due to receiving only half the experience and (old) Sif Muna stopped giving me piety once i started training my own killdudes skills. So, i didn't even get high level summoning gifts and just stopped playing that cat.

Then the brilliant plan was born: just train only your physical (UC + Fighting, later Dodging) skills from the very start while using level 1—3 summons to fight alongside you or without you. Afterwards, preferably highroll into a good wand and go Trog because it's not about optimal play but about sending a message. The offline test of that plan was successful and relatively fun, though i was shooting myself in the foot at least three times by neglecting the starting background completely, taking Trog after the character selection screen (starting as Be >> going Trog as any other background) and wrecking my own late game. So, i wasn't sure if i could pull it off online, and in the game that actually counts chickened out and took a D:3 Oka altar. Sorry guys, can't meme too much while streaking. The Temple was found on D:7, so thank goodness i didn't wait for it.

Apart from the Trog part, the plan was pretty good because: a) even with starting stats a FeSu fails to Summon Canine Familiar only 12% of the time; b) level 1—3 summons, while being spammed enough, wreck the early dungeon. So basically, i treated the summoner's starting book as artificer's wands: it's just a way to get through the early dungeon. Pretty sure i haven't invented anything new here but for me it was quite a relief that i didn't have to spam summons for the entire game.

Just as last time, the bulk of my post is dedicated to the early game because then i got Heroism up, found a book of Earth and you know the rest by now. Zot and the orb run were harder than usual because i was lacking Dragon Form, castable Haste and Blink, but i still haven't died once. Oh, i also learned Summon Lightning Spire just to deal with shining eyes in Slime Pits and it failed at that pretty hard, i got mutated like crazy. And i found amulets of Vitality and Air in that game, as well as a randart one of inaccuracy with +Inv and a +5 ring of slaying. My turncount and game duration were also the best for this online account but still pathetic by good players' standards.

From earlier in the thread you said you treated hobgoblins with weapons as if they could burst for 10 damage, looks like you're correct on that figure:
It can hit for up to 5 damage plus its club.

This of course assumes they have a club, which is 5 damage. If it's another weapon, be more careful :)

Won a necromancer too, no deaths again. There was one crucial near-death experience at XL 4 when i was fighting Robin with friends and ended up having two mighted hobgoblins with slings two tiles away from me while being at 7 HP. I blind-quaffed a potion, got brilliance instead of curing but one of those dummies actually stepped into my melee range so i vampiric drained myself back to life. I'm not sure if monsters need time to switch from a ranged weapon to their melee, if so, making a step forward might've been correct.

Pain + Vampiric Draining is a pretty sick early game combo, albeit having a starting spell that damages you is really scary as a cat. Did you guys know that having 0,4 in Fighting as a level 1 felid bumps your HP from 7 to 8? The more you know... So, i was thinking about learning some necromancy beyond the starting book and maybe even going Kiku again. But then i just found a book of Maledictions on D:3 into a temple with Makhleb on D:4 into a book of Earth somewhere in early Lair and played the exact same character yet again as if it was a greatminotaur run. Which is probably for the best because necromancy is one of the things in Crawl i always want to have fun with but just end up being frustrated by every time. Necromancy does have quite a few fun spells but there's just never enough experience for them or there is a less tedious way to win the game. Maybe in 0.20 with most of the good spells removed i can give this school a try. (Just kidding, i'll keep learning DMsl like an addict.)

So, the only backgrounds left are 5 elementalists, i wonder which ones are better played as melee. Clearly not FE but i'm unsure about all the other ones. The sad truth is that i can probably make a melee cat out of every single one of them but that's just dumb. I want to get done with this run already.

FE is the best for conjuring. IE is the best for plain melee, while EE and VM are decent for stabbing. AE just sucks.

I think FE is great for melee. Your best spell, sticky flame requires you to be in melee range anyway. So you might as well hit the dude a few times so it dies even faster.

It is trading safety for turns and real-time which is bad while streaking IMHO. As Fe you don't have a reason to stay in melee after casting sticky flame, just run away, you have speed, low HP, low AC and ability to stay engorged all game.

Use pain to clear D1-D2, memorize vamp draining/regeneration, and then go into a weapon skill. After a few levels of weapon skill, branch out into fighting/dodging, and proceed to play as a melee character who can pain to soften up enemies at range, and has the two best healing spells in the game. I generally don't like using allies, although if you're really trying to maximize the start, then using animate skeleton/dead is probably optimal, even if I don't generally bother. Once your melee is strong enough to handle most threats you can dump another 3-4 levels into necromancy to up your vamp draining/regeneration spellpower.

It's a very good start. VM is similiar in that it's very powerful but that you should start to hybridize around D:3. Some people don't like that you have to hybridize so early, but imho you become a more interesting melee character with some strong backup tools with either background. When you finally get to VM, definitely use poisonous vapours. I was surprised how strong it is; obviously it can't be used against poison resistant monsters, but it will take out ANYTHING that doesn't resist it pre lair. Orc warriors with plate armor have so much AC they can threaten nearly anyone - VM's can kill them in 3-4 casts and walk backwards without taking any damage at all.

Gotta agree with you on this point. The "optimal" way to use Sticky Flame is applying it and walking away anyway, that's how you get full value out of it. And felids are pretty good at walking away.

After the FeNe game, i've spent some time splatting practicing with MuNe offline. Since it's a mummy, i went for Gozag every time and didn't miss Animate Skeleton/Dead at all. Vampiric Draining, on the other hand, carries the start pretty hard for a level 3 single school spell.
I was mostly interested in trying out mid-late game necromancy though but thanks to Gozag not being Kiku or Sif and also turning corpses into money, i haven't got much of it.
Death Channel was actually very fun and good until Zot, similarly to Yredelemnul (except more fun). Haunt was a major disappointment, i had to combine it with Shadow Creatures (literally first time ever i resorted to using this cheesy spell) and my own demon blade with Potion Petition to take out orbs of fire. Not really sure how a necromancy specialist is supposed to do Zot:5. Maybe it's actually all about teleroulette with Revivification or something. I was also told that Infestation is an awesome spell but i haven't updated the game in a year. Will have to revisit necromancy in 0.20 with something like a Ds or Te.

Once again, i'm planning to finish this run in 0.18, so no Poisonous Vapours for me and Olgreb's Toxic Radiance is pretty garbage for me as well. I can't see myself losing to an orc warrior with no ranged option as a FeVM though, maybe the fight will take a bit longer but it's supposedly an autowin.

Typical Necromancer does have access to Animate Dead for Zot 5, preferably with Kiku's corpses.

Necromancer is a natural hybrid, it fights along with their zombies. You dont expect FE or IE to kill oof with bolts of fire/ice, do you?

Death Channel is great on draconian packs in Zot.

Simulacrum (without Gozag, of course) is great. Infestation is great. Haunt is great. But yeah, you have to poke OoFs yourself some, too, usually.

I haven't played an IE in some time, but I'd assume that bolt of cold is a reasonable way to kill OOF's, they only have 1 pip of resistance to cold. Ideally you'd drop a freezing cloud on top of them as well, but is bolt of cold not enough alone?

Funny story: While I've used bolt of cold/freezing cloud (and even glaciate) on characters in the past, I've apparently never won a character who started as an IE.

Oofs have also insane AC/EV and very high hp.
It takes ages and fuckload of mana to kill one with bolt of cold. In other words it's possible only for a character so diesel he can surely kill it with more adapt things

The most straightforward elementalist, FE, is checked off the list now. Once again, it was a deathless game, but oh boy, was it a tough one.

The character had a nice and slow start until it got shafted from D:3 to D:6. Hilariously, "i'm so getting shafted this game" was the main thought on my mind while i was methodically clearing the first few dungeon floors. Thankfully, i identified qutie a few consumables by that point and got back to D:3 at the cost of a haste potion and two scrolls of magic mapping. Afterwards, the shaky dungeon floor sent me from D:8 to D:10 and that adventure was even tougher. I had to use one of !haste, !curing, !heal wounds, ?fear and ?teleport to get out.

Then the game went relatively smoothly for a while. I was supposed to join Sif instead of Vehumet for the sake of variety but Sif Muna wasn't in the temple, so i found a decent excuse to go Vehumet again. Even though Vehumet seems to have a similar role for conjurers as Okawaru has for melee/ranged combatants, being a rather no-brainer pick, i don't find him as broken so i'm not very ashamed of worshipping him. In fact, he only makes playing casters bearable. As far as felid casters go, extended range is amazing for them, especially on fireballs.

Vehumet was kinda trolling me with midgame gifts. Instead of Bolt of Fire he gave me Bolt of Magma which was my spell to spam for the rest of the game. To be honest, it's not even that bad of a spell since it's a partially irresistible bolt which is not twice as loud as a shout and doesn't miss all the time. In other words, it's much better than the embarrassment we call Lightning Bolt. Its damage was okay as well, a bit higher than Fireball's. The only real downside is its range.
I also received Iron Shot as a god gift but he replaced it with a goddamn Conjure Ball Lightning as i was 0.3 Spellcasting away from picking it up. I was already training 100% Spellcasting to learn it, probably should've aggressively amnesia'd one of the spells i used at the time too. When i finally got Iron Shot in a book, it was too late as i was already throwing crystal spears at things.

So, it was going to be a nice game of Kiting Kitten (i even had the easiest Orc:2 clear in a while) but i found a way to mess everything up: mutation roulette. Mind you, it's pretty safe in versions with !cure mutation as long as you have enough of those potions. But i had only one, was too impatient and accidentally drank !beneficial mutation before it so i ended up with teleportitis 1 like an idiot. As you'd imagine, i was playing the exact type of character that "wants" teleportitis the least. But at the very least i had speed and stealth on my side to escape some of the teleports. In Vaults, teleportitis was manageable but then i had an unpleasant choice between Depths and Elf. I usually go into Elf first so i did it this time too, even attempted Elf:3 despite knowing it's a terrible idea. I thought i could accomplish something on that floor with all the extra lives i had and maybe snatch a !curemut out of their loot. That didn't happen at all. Maybe if i was playing a recent version and had Ignition in my spell list, facing all elves at once wouldn't have been so bad. As it stands, i had to pull off a couple of very expensive escapes and then leave that place.
Depths entry had a bunch of dudes as well, including spark wasps and spriggan air mages with no rElec outside of !resistance on my side. This is when i thought i just lost the game but then realised Crypt was also a branch. Guess what, Crypt:1 had Khufu and at least one greater mummy two screens away from the entrance, so i had to escape from being teleported into their LOS a few times. Crypt:3 was pretty rough and had no !curemuts, sadly. Afterwards it was time to man up and burn through a lot of !resistance, !agility and !heal wounds to deal with the Depths welcoming party. The rest of Depths was mostly easier than that but i had some truly ridiculous random teleports, the #1 highlight easily being this. Somehow i still survived it even though i haven't even read !fear. It's embarrassing to think now that i didn't read that scroll, it's so obvious. All in all, what i realised there is that with teleportitis you can't just clear 80% of a floor and skip a ridiculous vault behind a runed door because the game will make you face your worst fears anyway. Lesson learned.

After finishing Depths (except for one skippable full-floor vault) and Abyss my last resort was going into a Ziggurat which actually gave me a couple !curemuts on the fourth floor and even a couple !benemuts for +10% to both HP and MP. The game suddenly became pretty darn easy without teleportitis. The hardest part of Zot was this vault, mostly because i faced it before and was absolutely sure that the third upstairs are in the same area. They weren't and i couldn't have checked it easily because i had no time for mapping and skipped the part of Zot:1 with respective downstairs. So, i just teleported into a safe spot, then dug myself a resting hole and used it instead of an upstairs while clearing the vault. Also, it was in Zot where i finally found OOD, solving the OOF problem.

And that was the game which was a lot harder than it really should've been. I would've probably been drowning in consumables near the end if the whole teleportitis accident didn't happen. The last thing worth mentioning is that i learned Confuse pre-Lair on this cat and did not regret having it one bit. There are quite a few otherwise broken monsters in this game (spark wasps, shock seprents, moths of wrath, ironbrand convokers, death cobs) with low MR.
Oh, also: this game had quite a lot of Delayed Fireball abuse.

i'll give it a shot: vehumet makes you better at things you're already good enough at, and does little to shore up your weaknesses. though still better than sif who usually does neither.

i do enjoy playing with vehumet since it's so straightforward, no need to worry about training invocations or using active abilities or anything, but assuming optimal play they don't really give you that much except for convenience.

So this is going back a bit, but any reason why the FeSu had 10% fail on statue form at the end? I'd think you would have taken that down somewhat by the end, did you really have that failure rate all game long or did you swap equipment or something which just makes it look like you had higher fail?

That's typically the fail rate i'm comfortable with on buff spells that are not rMsl/Regen (those would not last long if they aren't trivial to cast). Every time i see people's morgues with 1% everywhere, i keep wondering how they have so much XP to spare.

Odd. I mean at 10% fail that's likely still a yellow miscast, which seems like it'd be high risk to use for an entire game. You only need about 1 more skill in trans/earth to bring that down to <5%, why not do it? Or train spellcasting a bit more if you want mana/to help other spells? You may also eke out another point of AC, although I agree that training statue form spellpower for AC is of limited usefulness, but if you're removing miscasts and failure rate, getting the +1 ac along with it is nice. You had 24.8 fighting by the end, I feel like you could probably get statue to 1% fail for the equivalent of that .8 levels hanging off the end :)

Of course, I also don't want to try to convince you too much, as it's clearly working for you - I doubt I could streak half as many felids, so maybe just keep on truckin'...

If wiki page about miscast is correct, Earth miscast can deal 3d15 explosion, Transmutations miscast can deal 3-25 damage too. I wouldn't like to get those miscasts as Felid with 3 AC and tiny HP. Exploring in statue form as Felid is not a great idea IMHO, at least before extended.
Though Felid does have extra speed in normal form so I assume it can retreat if necessary. Unless there is a vault warden, orb of fire and alike.

I'm not claiming to having played my games optimally. In fact, i'm pretty sure that even if i write something like a melee felid guide, tavern pros would find at least 80% of it to be incorrect. However, the game (especially 0.18-) is forgiving enough to allow some mistakes and felids in particular can risk a chance to die relatively often. 8—10% failure rates on spells i don't spam have never wrecked me too hard and i'll probably adjust my play as soon as that happens. 24,8 Fighting does indeed sound like overkill in that situation. At least minmay seems to be okay with yellow miscasts on buff spells, that's something.

I mean, before they're in melee range, sure, but you generally cast statue form when a monster appears, and imho if you have something in LOS, the fight has already started. There are plenty of melee only monsters in crawl, but at least half or so have decent ranged attacks, so you can take damage/status effects if you're wasting 1-2 turns on miscasting.

Although it is an option to always autoexplore in statue form, which would probably be better if you're at 10% miscast, although you lose the automatic disengage (although it'd still be fast enough to end statue form and run away from a 10 speed monster anyways). I usually do keep statue form up while walking, but then again I'd also have a longer duration due to higher spellpower, although I'm not sure how much duration really scales...

For some reason I've always trained Statue Form until it's gray 4% but I'm taking a page out of FMR's book and stopped at 9% yellow this time, and went back to training *UC/+Fgt/+Ddg. I'm not sure how big a difference it makes though.

15 runes: 2x HuSk, Op(Mo,Tm,Wn,Fi,Wr,EE,AM,Wz,Ne), VSTm, DsTm, Dg(Sk,Tm), MuGl, GhMo, Fe(En,EE,Ar,Wn,IE)

Felids do have more than 45 hp when casting statue form but still I wouldn't like to lose 50% of my hp while having monsters in view AND still AC 3 because I failed to get into Statue Form

I definitely wouldn't permanently explore in statue form as a felid because that ruins the whole "picking your fights" aspect of the race by cutting your speed and stealth down. Walking away at 10 speed as other races is pretty good too but you're probably talking about Chei characters anyway so you don't really care about that and can afford to have amazing spell powers and success rates as well.
