CeGl In Progress - Late Game Advice Wanted

So I decided to get back into Crawl. I have one win years ago, but things have changed quite a bit. Rolled this character on whim; Wanted to try Qazial, and decided to downplay all his noise by running a race that isn't stealthy anyway. Found some stupidly good artifact chain armor to give me a bunch of AC early on, and the rod of freaking clouds while worshiping a god that made me immune to whatever clouds it spits out.

Then I found the Shield of Resistance, a great artifact trident, and a passable hand crossbow, and managed to reach the point where I can melee iron dragons without much difficulty. I just decided to turn spellcasting on to see if I can get some low level spells online, when I find the armor of the freaking dragon king. It isn't actually that much better than my +12 Chain armor at the moment, and likely takes any sort of casting out of the question completely, but combined with Qazial's passive resistance and my shield, I'm sure fire and ice threats will be trivialized for me.

Anyway, a few questions:

Should I use the Dragon Armor, or try to get some spells going? If spells, which spells are worth it for this character to pick up? If going a bit less armored is better for magic, I can get the Fairy Dragon armor instead.
Is it worth turning Evocations back on at some point to get those last few ticks of power on Cloud Cone? Acidic Fog sounds pretty badass.
I have no means of seeing invisible yet, and the layout on Spider 4 is pretty wide open. so I'm worried about having to fight multiple Ghost Moths. Can I take them blind? Or should I hold out until I can see them? I have sustain attributes if that is enough.
I'm thinking of invoking disaster area several times on the stairs at Vault 5 to clean up the mess that usually waits down there. Any idea what my target invocations skill should be to do that?
Does this character have post endgame potential? I don't envision doing a 15 rune run, but it would be nice to get more than three.

That's some pretty terrible EV. You need to train some dodging up. and I'm thinking some more armour to use the one you are wearing. 29 AC is winnable but more is better.

You trained a lot of different things... Polearms + Crossbows + Evo + Qaz are too much offense options, and your weapons aren't that great.

Can you find a demon trident ? A glaive ? A bardiche ? If there's a glaive or bardiche somewhere, I'd consider dumping the shield, you already have nice resists and Qaz helps.

I would focus on Polearms + Invoc for offense, Armour for defense for a while...

A bunch of vanilla +0 glaives lying around. I'm still used to the old scrolls of vorporalize weapon/enchant weapon I/2/3, so I have a hard time remembering that I can just make any old weapon I find on the ground badass now. I have one Brand Weapon scroll, and six enchant weapons. I think I'll hold onto the Shield and Trident through Depths and Vault 1-4, in hopes of finding a bardiche or demon trident. If I can't find something better by that point, I'll just grab a glaive. Armor and invocations in the meantime.

Yeah. I literally took the character dump as soon as I finished trying on the new armor for the first time. I guess I'm not quite ready for it yet. In my Chainmail I have 7 EV and only 1 less point of AC, which still isn't great. In chainmail I'm also almost at the point where I can cast level 1 spells, so as I said, getting some magic online is possible if I decide not to go with the unrand armor.

Update: I acquired some centaur barding, which helps my AC alot. Trained a bit of armor as well. Switched back to my old Chain Mail for now. Still no bardiche or demon trident, and only one Brand Weapon scroll to brand a Glaive. Also found a Glaive of pain, and I have most of the Necromancy books, but I don't think picking up another new skill just to use a weapon that isn't that great in the endgame is worth it, right?

Still have a bit more of vaults to clear. Do you think I could handle Vault 5 with what I have, or should I give up and blow my branding scroll on a glaive after clearing floor four?

Clear V:4 and Crypt with Invocations focus. Then you sould be able to handle V:5, and don't forget about Disaster Area...

I'd wait V:5 for a last weapon chance then brand a glaive... You could also have a loot in the Vestibule of Hell (stairdance) for a demon trident... Depending on the Crypt:3 map, you can maybe find knight wielding some...

Good news! I Found myself a demon trident of electrocution on the first floor of the crypt.
The bad news is Mara is holding onto it.
The worse news is he is in a room full of other nasty monsters.

In addition to what I can see in the dump, I know there is also an Eidolon in the room. I usually skip Mara when I see him on his own, and he has backup. You guys have any ideas on how to proceed here? Think I have a chance at hasting or bezerking to pop him in melee before he blinks or summons more maras?

Alright. Made some serious progress.

Got that trident off Mara (exploited haste and piercing in a corridor). Enchanted it up, and started kicking ass and taking names. Got some translocations online to help get out of pickles. Picked up the runes from Spider, Vaults, and Abyss, and started working on Zot.

It was around running into my first Orb of Fire that it dawned on me that the recent removal of resist mutation amulets might change the conventional wisdom regarding the order in which one tackles the endgame branches. I have four cure mutation potions left, so would it be smart for me to focus on the (typically considered more difficult) endgame branches without mutators? I'm guessing that means Hell. Using either my old artifact trident (see earlier dumps, it isn't presently in inventory) or my crossbow on top of two rings, I can reach rN+++, while getting two ticks of fire and ice resistance from my shield and armor and perhaps more from my god, I should be fine in theory. I'm thinking perhaps Cocytus, because I ID'd a legendary deck of summonings with Foxfire as the top card, which the wiki says will annihilate the boss.

Perhaps I could pick up some summoning and spawn minions to block malmutators line of fire? That would allow me to do Zot and the 'easier' post endgame branches without as much fear of mutation. I have access to Sputterflies... and with a bit of scumming the abyss for training could try to get something a bit more meaty online as well, especially in branches where I don't feel I need the extra resists from my gold dragon armor.

As of now, I think my goal is to get five or six runes, and kill my first hell/pan lord. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Wow, that's some serious improvement of the character !

Don't overestimate Malmutate. Don't overestimate rN either.

If you can get some rCorr, Slime shouldn't be that hard. Don't forget to bring ?immolation there. And you're fast enough to avoid the few malmutators (shining eyes) you can find down there. That would make 5 runes.

If you really want some more, check Pan, do not explore, rush to portals, you'll be told when you enter a rune level (not for the demonic one though, but there are themed-floor you will recognize : cold, holy, hellio island...)

Do not bother about OoF malmutate. When you fight them, you have *almost* already won. Get the Orb and escape with a few bat mutations...

Alright. Dealt with the royal jelly by hitting it a few times, reading immolation, blinking to a safe distance, and invoking disaster area. In addition to the rune, I found a highly enchanted artifact Glaive of pain in the vaults at branch end. I know pain is a bit less useful in the endgame, but it should hold its own in Zot. There are also some bardiches now, include a +1 freezing specimen, and I have 2 scrolls of branding and 2-3 more enchant weapons at the moment. I also found the Unrand Damnation Crossbow (not currently in my inventory), which is the real reason I'm considering ditching the shield.

Should I ditch the shield and go two handed at this point? If I want to use the Glaive in Zot, how high should I get my necromancy skill? Are there any specific non-rare items or low to mid level spells that would be good for my character in Pan? Pleanty of things I have found but are not in my inventory. I'm also not opposed to scumming the Abyss for some EXP to get specific spells online - I have plenty of food, and a bunch of food shops spawned for me this run that I can exploit if I run low on what is in my inventory.

I would neither use the pain glaive nor Damnation Crossbow (unless it has been changed recently : the hellfire damage was pretty bad). Training Fighting + Dodging will be more useful.

I used Hellfire back when it was 3d8 and had a positive impression, could be simply because an arbalest isn't a shoddy weapon in itself. It was buffed further in this commit, and if I understand it correctly, it's 3d12 now. Boom!

Ordinarily I'd say an elec demon trident is good enough. Together with the shield of resistance and throwing it should be great.

However, unrands are fun and you have trained xbows already, so I'd say see how you like it. Just bear in mind that some enemies are immune to the effect. Having a backup freezing/vorpal weapon would be good. Once you go for the arbalest you gotta dodge the shield, so going with a two-handed polearm is obvious. Don't bother with pain, the freezing bardiche sounds good.

I'd recommend memorising repel missles, or deflect if you don't mind training quite a bit more. Getting some summons (shadow creatures probably) can be a good get-out-of-jail-free card, but it can be frustrating with a ranged weapon. Getting haste castable would of course be great. Swiftness can be good until that's available. Spectral weapon is also pretty good, especially with a polearm.

Somewhat more esoteric: LRD will let you ninja some runes. Passage of Golubria can function as a cheaper CBlink that needs to be set up in advance.

My god pick gives me reflect missiles as a passive power. Are you suggesting I change gods? If I am playing with the xbow from hell, I'm guessing that the good gods that most post game characters switch to are a bit out of the question.

The hellfire/damnation damage has always been very good (it ignores AC, so it's like elec except more damage). The main problem is you use eight times as much ammo.

No, don't change gods unless you are confident you know what happens and how to deal with it. Although to be fair I imagine Qaz can be a liability in Pan and Hell.

Yeah... Found that out the hard way. Waking up and inviting the entire floor is all fun and games until the floor has multiple sources of Torment and Damnation.

I'm shocked my trip to Pan didn't turn this into YASD. I'm more shocked I somehow walked away with the demonic rune. I credit the sheer number of consumables I picked up scumming the Abyss for my survival.

A bit more character progress since I last posted. Abyss Scummed fighting for more HP, and various magic skills to get dispersal, regeneration, and swiftness online in my heavy armor. Pulled a Eudemon Blade off a daeva while I was down there, and scummed to get that to min delay and max enchantment as well - it served me well in Pan.

Right now I'm torn between going for the Orb and calling it the game with my first extra-rune win, or scumming some more for consumables and trying to get another rune. I really want my first kill/ninja of a major pan/hell lord. I'm thinking things might be more doable if I just bring a few digging wands, and aggressively create kill corridors in Pan, while also being mindful to leave portals with passage of golub everwhere I go to make backtracking easier. If I do hell, I might change to fire/ice dragon armor to make it easier to cast spells while retaining the appropriate resistances - I have 8 Armor Enchantment scrolls stashed. If I'm just doing one Hell, I would think I should have enough saved food to make use of a nasty spell like malign gateway in spite of my low int.

If I do decide to do the smart thing and ascend now, Am I better off using the Eudemon Blade or Demon Trident in Zot? The blade is clearly the better weapon in terms of stats, but I'm guessing more things are vulnerable to electricity than holy wrath down there, and the ability to kite things with reaching is nice. Can Eudemon blades be rebranded with scrolls? If so is it worth trying if/when I'm done with the demonic post endgame branches?

You can just use the dtrident, and press ' to swap to the eudemon blade when you want it (if they're in slots a and b, use = to fix that). If you use a brand weapon scroll, either the eudemon blade can't be rebranded or it will become a demon blade again (the latter is what happened when I tried using say Kiku to brand a formerly-demon weapon).

You might as well do Zot before more extended and then decide.

Did Zot. Picked up some mutations that I can double back and heal off, but otherwise it was no big deal. I don't think I'll have time to play again until Sunday night, so I get to ponder my next move for awhile. Right now I'm leaning towards taking my ball (orb) and going home, but I think that is just because I am tired of grinding. I might have fresh stamina by the time I play again.

Any thoughts/suggestions on what my next move is if I decide to keep pressing on?

Visit the trove. Dump Qaz. Get Makhleb. Train dodging. Your evo is high enough. Watch out to not run out of teleports, these are important in Pan and Hells. I'd do Tomb before these, as it's static and predictable.

If you're going to be a coward and take makhleb (definitely stronger than qaz) why not just take Makhleb in the beginning? If you like Qaz then doing extended with em is a lot of fun and danger.

Actually, if you decide to switch gods, and I'm not convinced you should, you can switch to a god that helps you almost immediately: Zin. Due to the money -> piety mechanic you'll end up at full piety much faster than with Makh. Zin is also a great god for extended, with the single best panic button in the game.

When I picked Qaz, I was thinking 'lets try this god I have not used yet', not so much 'this character is going to make it to the extended endgame, better pick my god with that in mind'. I'm not opposed to trying the extended end game with him, but I'm not committed either.

If I'm not ascending right away, I'm likely going to scum for more consumables anyway. If I denounce religion, I'll likely be in the abyss for a good long spell after dealing with divine wrath, so speed at which I reach full piety is not the biggest issue.

My one win is with Zin, also on a character using heavy armor and a shield. Only way I'd go Zin with this char is if I decided to go for 15 runes or bust - otherwise I don't think I'll be proving anything to myself by using him. Might reconsider if I get some good mutations to lock in.

As for Makhleb, in spite of being one of the strongest gods in the game, I have just about zero experience with him. I played with him a few times years ago back when you could start as a Makhleb worshiper, and always wound up killing myself with a hostile greater servant. With the exception of some experimental deep dwarf characters when that race was first added, I don't think I've touched Makhleb since Fedhas was added to the game... and that was a long time ago. Coward's option or not, Mak is the most intresting of the gods suggested.

What is a good goal for evasion skill or EV on this character?

I have lots of recharging scrolls, and several more tele wands stashed. I'm not worried about Teles. My goal with Evo is to get acid fog, which I'm going to go out on a limb and guess few things resist, out of my rod from time to time.

If I do the tomb, do I need full elemental resistance? If not I might go to lighter armor to get better spells online. Wiki says using animate dead on the scarabs down there will tear new assholes for the local mummy population. What else might be useful for the tomb that I don't have?

I completely forgot about that trove. I'll make a point of hitting that if I get a few spare minutes today.

What does one need for Tomb?
- A source of Sustain Attributes, otherwise you'll have to recover from the stat drain at some point.
- Negative energy resistance, there is a lot of torment, drain and stuff like that.
- Other resists are less important, so a single pip of rF+ and rC+ is usually fine.
- Regeneration is good to speed up torment recovery.
- MR+++ is good to prevent getting paralyzed by sphinxes.
- The one spell that makes Tomb easy for me is Silence. You get a greater mummy 1v1 by careful pulling (tedious, also might not be possible with qaz), then hit Silence and kill it before the spell wears off. It basically turns them into Komodo Dragons with four times as much health. Harmless. Your Eudemon Blade will make short work of them. Incidentally it also pulls the teeth of Liches and Ancient Liches. Bear in mind that you can't read scrolls or use invocations under the effect. Having evocable tele is useful for that reason.
- Aura of Abjuration is good because a swarm of Emperor Scorpions can be pretty annoying.
- Like in any tougher area, Shadow Creatures is a solid summoning spell.
- The rest is just patience and stair dancing.
- Remember that a Ce can casually run away from all dangerous threats, don't underestimate Scarabs though, they can slow you down.

Sure, none of the listed things are strictly necessary, but they do make the game easier, faster and less tedious. In the end there aren't really any strict requirements for any area of the game that I can think of. Still, you're better off with MR+++ and special cases like rF+ for OoF's and rCorr for slime. Maybe I should've called it: 'What do I have when I bother to do Tomb?'

I do tomb without MR pretty often. You want a plan to deal with the introductory sphinx paralysis/confuse (I lure them around the corner), but with chain paralysis gone it doesn't scare me much. After that, nothing really happens, sphinxes don't randomly generate in Tomb so the only potential problem is (ancient) liches. The sphinxes aren't going to take you by surprise because they are in the same place every time, and liches shouldn't take you by surprise in Tomb since the branch is so heavy on stairs and straight corridors.

rN makes the torment spam more bearable but it's not a big deal imo. I do not like silence even in tomb. And rF/rC/sustAt/regen won't matter at all.

Can't speak for duvessa, but I do it as 4th-5th (+ abyssal if that happened) a lot. It's often easier than V5 but rarely easier than slime, and lots of fun items to sort through. I'd always have swappable MR for the sphinxes, as even with running back I attract multiples at once.

Silence/rN/sustAt are things that I do find useful but not strictly needed (sustat in particular I can rarely fit, might swap to it for a while if the statdrain is getting high), just need a plan for each enemy type really. With say chei or qaz, those plans need to be more robust.

I don't think tomb is really ever easier than V:5 anymore. I don't often do it as my third rune, but I often dip into it to collect some free xp, possibly abandoning if too much crap piles up on the stairs.

Alright. Started on the tomb. I'm doing okay, but it is quite the grind.

It turns out that aside from my hand crossbow, and my old artifact trident I used to use, all my rN+ is on rings, so I can't have rN+++ and sustain attributes at the same time. Learned silence, and it is quite helpful. Switched to a lighter unrand armor to make casting easier.

The first part of Tomb 1 was pretty simple - control undead for the scarab swarms, and silence for everything else. The stairs to Tomb 2 have proven to be a major pain in the ass, but Qaz gives me a dependable, if very slow, means of clearing it out. I go down stairs, invoke disaster area once or twice, and then retreat to the abyss to restore my piety and shake off the drain and stat loss. I'm training Transmutations and Necromancy right now, in hopes of eventually getting Necromutation online. It might take me a few days to finish the Tomb, but I think if I plug away, I can get it done.

That sounds like a rather painful way of doing that floor. I don't think you'll be impressed with the stairs to Tomb:3. Personally, I'd pick SustAt over rN+ because I can rest to heal, but not to restore stats. What's stopping you from just stair-dancing between Tomb:1 and 2?

I managed to clear the tomb. RNG must have just been mean about putting too many torment monsters outside of silence range on that one stairwell. Everything else was fine, and I was comfortable handling the rest of the branch with judicious stair dancing. Did have to resort to disaster area in one of the treasure rooms, which destroyed some of the loot via lava bath, but other than that, the gold rune was easier than expected to get.

After picking up that rune, I returned to the Abyss to get necromutation online, and that is where things got intresting. I ran out of cure mutation potions, and picked up bezerkitus right about the same time I got the spell castable... which more or less forces me to play entirely in Lich Mode, thus forgoing Holy Wrath and potions.

Decided to do Gehenna, as my rF+++ and Lich Form more or less nullifies the major threats (I'm more than meaty enough to take a round or three of damnation at this point), and got to floor seven easily enough. Started working through the branch end vault, and got within a room or two of Asmodeus before the hell force finally got around to draining my Int and dropping a nasty pack of monsters including two brimstone fiends on my ass, so I teleported to safety and returned to the vestible to regroup and plan. After running to the abyss and grinding to restore my stats, I think my plan is to lure the demon lord into a small room, which should limit my LOS and focus most of disaster area's punch on him. Any other tricks that might help me with Asmodeus?

Unless I find more cure mutation potions, I'm guessing I'll have to ascend pretty soon. I may be able to do Cocytus and Dis, but I'm likely to run into dispell undead in Tartarus and Pan.

I recognise your dilemma from some of my early games. In general, I'd say you are probably overestimating the effect of bad mutations. Also, it's actually possibly to avoid getting mutated almost entirely. An easy way is to break line of sight using your own summons. Usually shadow creatures is great, but with all that experience in necromancy you might just be able to use haunt.

I don't want to be responsible for the death of this character, but I'm not convinced it's a good idea to be necromutated most of the time. I guess most of the time it's not a good idea to invest the XP to even get necromutation. Normally berserkitis can be managed by just luring more carefully, but here's Qazlal again!

You could still switch to Zin, you get a free mutation cleanse, mutation and hell effect protection, great panick buttons, and best of all peace and quiet.

A better plan than to kill hell lords is to ignore them. Run in hasted, apport the rune and teleport away.

That faerie dragon armour seems pretty useless, considering you have rF++ on two permanent items anyway. I guess you can't use your Dragon King anymore given you're using necromutation, but you'd have been much better off without that experience drain for one spell. Given that you're here now, do replace Silence + Beastly Appendage with Borgnjor's.

This character is currently kind of different than any I've played, so I'm not sure how useful my advice is at this point. However, I have 15-runed qazlal, which I guess is a bit unusual, so here's some comments:

  • If I'd seen this earlier, what I would have said is that qazlal is pretty bad in extended and I would strongly recommend against him as a first(?) attempt at extended. However, I guess you've survived so far, so now my advice would be, probably don't try for 15 runes (just win now and try a more conventional first 15 rune character). That said, I understand the impulse to keep going with a strong character.
  • I think you're overestimating the impact of berserkitis, that wouldn't be enough for me to stay in lichform all the time (not much would be).
  • With that sort of investment in necro, I think you're kind of underusing the relevant spells. At least learn haunt, borg's, dispel undead. (Also, is cblink available/castable? Not sure what it takes these days but that's a very high transloc.)
  • Armour/dodging look quite undertrained for 7 runes in, though I suppose 37/19/23 is not so bad. But EV could be a lot higher in mottled.
  • Abyss scumming for xp with a qaz character sounds pretty crazy to me, though I guess with kill to exit it might be more doable than it used to be. But the abyss can kill anything given really bad luck (e.g. starcursed masses in bad terrain), and qazlal pretty much guarantees at least some bad luck there.

As I said before, I didn't come into this game expecting to go to extended, or even win, I'm not that good a player (I've been playing this game for years, and my first thought upon seeing a threat is always 'how do I beat this' rather than 'should I try to beat this now'). I just wanted to try Qaz for the first time.

I do agree with the general thought that Berserkitis isn't as bad as it seems; This character can handle most threats while slowed at this point, but I still see little reason not to stay in lichform at all times while in the Hell Branches that have torment but not dispel undead; I have wands of haste and teleport, so it is not like no potions means no panic buttons.

I have low Int and as such low Spellpower. Are damage inflicting spells like dispel undead even worth it for this character? Haunt and Borgs are good ideas though. cblink is at 9% success rate, - I'll likely have to scum for another level or two on the skill to feel comfortable using it. Also, if I'm picking up summoning for Haunt, and I already have good Translocations, is it worth picking up Malign Gateway? Or is it not worth the spell levels for this character?

I have no mottled dragon hide - It didn't dawn on my that this character was good enough for extended, and thus might want to learn spells, until I was past the point where the game stopped spawning those stickyflame spewing assholes for me, so I never bothered butchering any of the ones I did kill.

I think Centaur Speed gives me a leg up on the abyss, and perhaps over other qaz characters in general. I might not be able to pick my battles as easily as characters using other gods, but I can at least dictate where the fight is going to take place.

Final Floor seems to be all deep water with five islands - an entry chamber in the middle of the map, and one more landmass on each corner. Does anybody know that particular vault well enough to tell me where the Rune is, and if the other islands are worth visiting? It seems like I'm stuck cleaning out the entire floor's monster population before I can explore (thanks Qaz :( ), but this is not that tough of a task. I changed to Ice Dragon Armor, which gives full ice resistance and better AC while still allowing me to cast Necromutation, and full Ice Resist, Good Defensive Stats, and an undead body seem to be all I need to render all the monsters of cocytus rather trivial. I was feeling rather badass taking on a stream of monsters including Ice Fiends and Ice Dragons and taking little damage in return.

I was eventually forced to escape because I let Lichform expire while engulfed by a water elemental. Still feel confident I can take this branch. I'm guessing Antaeus is one of the few things too threatening for my character to take in melee, so I'll likely just ninja the rune if the wiki suggested trick of Legendary Foxfire does not work for me.

I think I'm almost done. I may do Dis, but I don't think I'll go to Tartarus or re-visit pan. Qaz willing, My next update should be YAVP, so any final advice for Antaeus, the Iron City, and/or the Orb Run (which as a Centaur I'm not worried about) would be appreciated.

I have no mottled dragon hide - It didn't dawn on my that this character was good enough for extended, and thus might want to learn spells, until I was past the point where the game stopped spawning those stickyflame spewing assholes for me, so I never bothered butchering any of the ones I did kill.


Faerie DA is the same thing as mottled, just fancier looking. IDA is a better choice though.

Got the runes out of Coyctus and Dis as planned, before escaping with the Orb.

I have to say, running through Dis was the most fun I've ever had in crawl. The monsters felt more threatening than in the other hells, and the combination of Quicksilver Dragons to end my Lichform and fiends to torment kept me on my toes. That said, the more enclosed floor layout in Dis allowed me to get back to the basics, exploiting kiting and choke points like I did early in the very early game. I felt challenged, but empowered to deal with (or flee from) threats on my own terms, which I suppose is how a rougelike (or even video game in general) should make one feel.

I also got to play around with boxes of beasts. The wiki dose not seem to have much information on what the box can output in the new version, but with 21 Evocations, I was getting creatures who could win one x one fights with iron dragons and hell sentinels, so pretty useful.

10 Runes with Qaz... Not bad if I do say so myself. Thanks for all the help and advice guys.
