Kind of a BSy death

So I'm running around as a Deep Elf Conjurer having fun blowing people up to little bits. Vehument and the dungeon itself was being stingy with spellbooks, but that was fine since I was causing a sufficient amount of mayhem with the starting book. So I clear Lair and decided to take a dip to Orc 4 to see if it was doable or not. A little away from the stairs, I find Aizul all by his lonesome. Naturally, my first instinct is to run away. So I try. Two steps later, he sleeps me! I wake up and he chain sleeps me before I can move! And then he chain sleeps me again! Finally, getting bored of this, Aizul overkills me with Poison Arrow.

Chain-paralysis was removed, right? So why the heck is chain-sleep still in?

It wasn't one turn, it was nine, of which I had two to act, including seeing the enemy. And using a scroll/wand of Teleport on a largely unexplored Orc: 4 would have been patently stupid as the only other monster I encountered at that point on the floor was a Goblin. And yes, I had a Scroll of Blinking, but seeing a foe at the edge of my LOS while I'm at full health doesn't exactly scream "Oh crap, better use my only Blinking Scroll!" The moments that would have screamed that I got slept as soon as I woke up and couldn't do a thing. If chain sleep was blocked just like chain-paralysis, I would have probably gotten away.

So, chain-paralyze is A-OK when it's called sleep and coming from something that had a chance to one-shot (but didn't). I got it.

TP does have valid point. The main effect of sleep is the same as paralysis - you can't act. If chain paralysis was deemed too unfair, surely chain sleeping should too.

Minmay's tactical advice is valid. Aizul could have killed him even without chain sleep. I would have probably done the same and tried to step away, but I guess blinking was the safest option. Teleporting on orc:4 sounds quite suicidal, though.

Like danr said, TP does have a point, and chain sleeping needs to be fixed.

Well, you wake up from sleep as soon as you take damage so it's hardly the same thing as paralysis.

You still seem to lose that turn though, which sucks. That or Aizul got a double move.

To clarify if it wasn't clear (and I suspect it wasn't), I wasn't frustrated that Aizul killed me. Just the specifically chain-sleeping that led to me being helpless to do anything about my death. If he had slept me, woke me back up and then killed me as I tried to escape after taking a Poison Arrow to the face, then I wouldn't have cared. Well... cared more than I do when any Lairish-ranged character of mine dies.

Aizul is the only enemy i've come across that seems to victimize you with chain sleep, and i think, as far as a unique goes, it's fair. Respect him/it. If you have either rPois or Clarity you should at least have a fighting chance. more than anything, it sucks that you pulled him/it as early as Orc 4.

I didn't respect Aizul my first time, taking three separate goes at him/it. That was my first high-level character loss in Crawl. The actions and method of death make sense to me for this unique. Get the hell away right away if you stumble on him/it and you're not ready, even if that means a random teleport.
