[YAVP] SpEn - running thread until I win

on my second iteration. In Lair, have a rapier of electrocution now but came across a lajatang artefact +11 {slice rC+ Dex+3} which seems like a decent weapon. I have 10.5 invested in short blades but theres no guarantee I will find a quick blade. Is it worth the switch?

You have an ELEC rapier, a great weapon. I would not switch. (And if you find a quick blade, that will also be worse, unless it happens to be elec or pain).

Hmm. I always find it hard to choose between QB and rapier. Rapier seems stronger per hit, but doesn't the speed of Qblade make up for it? Died that game anyways, got too cocky.

Current game I have captain's cutlass. Also snagged a distortion dagger. Ill probably take that for Z5 and just try to banish everything for there and the ascent. Also an artefact rapier in a store ill check out. I'm doubting it will beat out the cutlass though.

When you are not stabbing, all short blades suck. The only exceptions are: elec, pain and disto weapons. These brands add a flat damage bonus, therefore they are great even on bad weapons. Of course, pain is good only if you have some necro skill.

So, a rapier is a bad weapon. A qblade is definitiely better, but still not good. But an ELEC rapier is great.

Current iteration. Elec rapier. In snake and I snagged an elec double sword. Also have a couple other double swords and a rebrand scroll. Is it worth switching over at this point? I'm sure I could get the exp in Elf/Vaults/Depths. Just debating if putting it into more hexes/fighting would be better in the end.

Be forewarned that spriggan melee will basically never be great. As 'bad' as an unbranded +9 quick blade is, IIRC an unbranded +9 double sword at mindelay will do pretty much the exact same rate of damage against unarmored foes. (of course, the double sword will fare much, much better against armored foes)

But part of the fun is finding a build that works; it would probably be worth trying at least a few games to see if a long blade switch works for you, and better to do it when you have access to a better weapon rather than having to make do with long swords and scimitars.

I would put a couple of stat upgrades into strength on these characters, especially once you've found a troll or steam dragon armour. It might net you a bit more EV/AC and could help get higher-level spells online (meaning higher than level 3, if you feel the need) -- but I don't know the formulas and can't tell you whether these potential boosts are strictly better than what you'd get from a few extra int/dex for any given character at any given point in the game. However, bumping str would also protect against stat loss, which is rare in a 3-rune game but pretty terrible if you hit zero. Zot traps, cursed equipment, degeneration, etc., can easily knock a stat down by 4 or more. I like to have some insurance.

cockiness on spider 4 ended that run before I got a chance to try the swords. :) teleport trap dropped me just outside the doors to the rune. I managed to kill everything in the vault and so when I was going for the rune I thought that with might, agility, and berserk it should be a breeze. I saw the shock wasps too late.

I am curious about using bare handed. I got cloven feet and fingernails from mutations on my current. I know that I would lose stabbing but that's not a big issue if I can still confuse. Would the dith shadow attack only work on my main attack and not auxiliary?

Out of curiosity, why? I mean, unarmed is often mediocre because of the skill investment required and the low early game damage, but is there a reason why it would be especially bad for spriggans? Low str?

i should probably have said "SpEn" instead of "spriggan", since that's what this thread is all about. beyond the heavy skill cost, it's a terrible idea to give up stabbing on a super-stealthy race with a stabbing background

I'm assuming that a rapier of electrocution is better than one of speed? Granted I also have a quick blade but it has no brand and I haven't found a single scroll for it yet.

Finally won it. Ive had several that should have so when I got close this time, I just played conservatively.

Didn't have any real rF until I found that one ring in the abyss. scummed for a bit to find something better but nothing. Kept the rF one on for the ascent in case anything with firestorm/fireball popped up. Got pretty lucky with potions of mutation, had Frail 1 in zot. Drank my last mutation potion before exiting which gave me frail 3.

Tried the quickblade with warp weapon and iron shot was 10x easier and safer.

Tried the quickblade with warp weapon and iron shot was 10x easier and safer.

Can you clarify? Did you try warp weapon and it made it easier, or are you saying you tried warp weapon, but iron shot was easier? Thanks!
