YAVP - First 15-rune win - HEWz

Well, that's my first 15-rune win. I've been playing for a few years now and have read a lot of 15-rune victory posts. To me, the common theme appeared to be magic using hybrids using a variety of schools. This really cuts across my prefered playing style. I like melee, and when I use magic, I like to concentrate on one school (Necros do necro, Warpers do transloc, etc.). It's hopelessly suboptimal, I know, but I'm comfortable with that, given all those conduct games I used to play in Nethack.

A while ago I tried to get a 15-runer done with a no-magic HuPa and got fairly close before being ground down with mutations in Pan. After that I shelved the idea of ever doing a 15-runer until I read mrbobbyg's 15-rune YAVP about a melee/shield-oriented, tornado powered paladin. This build pretty much aligned with my playing preferences, so I took it on, and after a couple of near misses (didn't give Dispater the respect he deserves), got this one out.

I kept a reasonably tight spell set. For most of the game, damage output was done with an early katana that Okawaru gifted, which ultimately turned into a Blessed Blade. In the endgame I learnt IMB and Lightning Bolt, mainly to pick off neqoxecs that were causing me no end of grief. No rMut amulets or randarts in this game. Only three cure mutation potions also. Tornado, as observed elsewhere, is stupidly good, so I was glad to have a play with it before its inevitable nerf. I found it did lead to reckless play though, as it is very tempting to sit in huge exposed areas. This was especially hilarious on Tomb:3 watching my hp go from full to nothing and back again as waves of greater mummies got shredded.

My only disappointment was the lack of spectacular gear. I've had better hauls on my three-rune wins. Obviously, the katana, the shield and the +3 amulet of slaying are the major counterexamples. The rest was just typical. I don't think I took anything from the hells or Tomb, which seems a bit wrong.

Melee + Tornado works really well indeed, i've won with a similar character, but started as a Crusader.
Hopefully you have more luck with the drops next time around!

Thanks guys. With the drops, I was plenty powerful enough to get through without them... I was just greedy. Good drops make or break a three-rune challenge game. Building up something 15-rune worthy essentially means become so puissant that equipment doesn't really matter anymore. Generally speaking of course - no rMut sucks in nearly every game.
