YASD: Okay, Seriously? That's just too much.

This game has managed yet again to find a way to enrage me. This time it involves jellies which officially owe me 1 Dragon Armor after they ATE THE GD THING WHEN IT WAS 2 SQUARES FROM ME!!!!!!!!!! And that's not the YASD that's the event that leads up to it. So I chase the little punk down with malice aforethought. Much to my anguish some centaurs were waiting and we all know what happens when I have to fight centaurs...I die. This time it's especially enraging becuase this character had something that NO OTHER CHARACTER I'VE EVER MADE HAD! A crowd control method which according to the wiki works miracles in Elf (the final resting place of my greatest character). If you look at his gear you'll see a rod of venom (which in retrospect if I wasn't trying to get a corner on the centaurs and I lobbed a poison cloud in them it would have helped). Poison cloud quite literally nuked masses of orcs and such as well as helped me kill the Orc Knight in the bailey. Which brings me to another thing. That bailey had the WORST treasure in it EVER! I kid you not not a single randart just halbreds of electrocution and axes of returning. That was ALL I FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFING FOUND! I cleared it out only to find absolute unusable trash in it after almost dying twice. Oh and I hate item mimics too there was a SHINY CRYSTAL PLATE I kid you not and borris (my small abomination I accidentally summoned whom I swear was immortal since I lost him for a bit but then a few levels later he popped up right beside me from behind the mob I was fighting, but alas he died but didn't cause piety loss with oka) walk up on this thing and the computer goes "rofl rofl rofl you wanted a shiny crystal plate? have a mimc instead!" I give this game 20 more tries if I can't beat it within that then it's going to take me hundreds if not millions to. I'm just being realistic here this game is a lot like roulette you know you can win you know it's possible to win but when you put your chips down the game just ruins you, and sure there's those few select times where you win but those are few and far between, and if 5 good characters and countless horrible ones can't even get to Zot then I honestly don't know how many it's gonna take.

Re: YASD: Okay, Seriously? That's just too much.

Did you get nailed by a shaft trap at some point? I can't think of any other reason you'd be clear down on D14 with Orc and Lair both mostly uncleared. I certainly wouldn't want to tangle with centaur warriors any earlier than necessary.

You should have probably mugged some orcs for better equipment at some point in there. Poison resistance is good, but ring mail kind of sucks pretty hard for a non-spellcaster. You get the guaranteed damage reduction and armor class of light armor but without the benefits of being able to cast, dodge, or sneak. Whips and hand axes are just awful, too, and should be replaced on a melee-oriented character as soon as a replacement can be arranged. A good brand is usually not good enough to make up the difference in base power between a starting weapon and a good weapon. Orcs often wander around with decent weapons or plate mail, and they don't usually put up much resistance when you make it yours. Orc 1-3 would almost certainly have had worthwhile upgrades to your weapon and body armor.

That is a very nice rod, though. I guess the centaurs liked it too.

Re: YASD: Okay, Seriously? That's just too much.

I guess it must be my upbringing or something but I tend to favor resistance over AC I did find some plate mails but then I couldn't poison cloud right on top of myself when mobs spammed me. The reason I didn't do any more lair was because I saw the swamp entrance and was like uhh..no I don't want to deal with vampire mosquitos with this low of AC. I tried Hive but there was just too many bees right by the start (I counted like 30 within that screen). I'm still horrified of Orc after all the bs it gives me. I still can't belive I got absolutely nothing useful from that bailey after almost 2 deaths. I didn't even think it was possible until now. Anyways I'm at YASD 10/20 before one of three things happens 1. I stop playing because of all the bs this game decides to throw at me and maybe start back up in a month or something 2. Get a really promicing character and post a CIP on here so I don't skrew things up. or 3. Beat the game. I must say at the rate things are going I'm leaning towards #1 unless I get a good reason not to it's getting THAT bad like I can tolerate me being a derp (I already know how horrible I am at video games I can live with that) but getting randomly killed and being able to do NOTHING about it bothers me big time. It's like playing I wanna be the guy (before they patched up some of the bugs).

I get killed an awful lot but 9 times out of 10 I can look back and see what I should have done differently. Crawl is very harsh, but also pretty fair :)

Often when your character is new and weak the game can squish you but I'd say most of my deaths once I'm past XL8 or so are totally my own fault. Sadly, there are still an awful lot of those

I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh

Re: YASD: Okay, Seriously? That's just too much.

Your character seems allright to me.
but: running after fleeing monsters is not a good idea most of the time. you had a sling, why didn't you use it?
other than this: a centaur warrior is a serious threat to a lvl 12 character. it kind of translates to "flee", or at least force it to melee (+heroism+finesse).
using the blink scroll might have been a good escape option.

finding nothing useful in a bailey is quite common, better not get too enraged about it.

Crawl can be chance-based, true, but in 95% of the cases of death there is a simple reason: you did something wrong.
learn that you cannot defeat all enemies (at least not in the first try), tactical retreat is a valid and necessary option in crawl.
master all the ways to escape an enemy, you'll need them!

You do not need to win. You only can win.

I would agree with this for any brand but elec (or pain for a character with high necromancy). A whip of elec is a MONSTER if you have a weapon to deal with grounded and resistant dudes.

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
