This victory has been a long fricking time in coming. I've long ago lost track of how many zillions of characters I've gone through in my time with this game. Needless to say, though, all the effort and failures before this only makes it sweeter.

I'm man enough to admit that part of this victory also belongs to this forum. Without the good advice I've read here (particularly the advice to play conservatively and even in a cravenly cowardly manner), I would never have gotten so far. Indeed, so far this is one of the most friendly and drama-free forums I've ever been on. Thank you all. I want to thank danr especially, as his weapon lab spreadsheet helped me to understand that yes, even when your strength is like three times your dex, a demon whip sometimes *is* better than an eveningstar.

Enough patting on the back, though. You want the highlights!

I started this run as a Minotaur Berserker. I always thought I'd ascend as a Kobold Berserker, if I ascended at all, but I've recently come to relearn the Minotaur's worth. (Sure, they can't eat and berserk almost at will, but they can be so tough they don't NEED to berserk so often, either. And you can choose your weapon!) Things started on a good omen when a teleport trap landed me next to Sigmund - allowing me to berserk and kill him literally two turns after spotting him.

One thing I did differently this time is that instead of going to the Lair as soon as I acquired rPois, I kept going down the main Dungeon as far as I could before tackling the Lair. I think the extra levels and bling made all the difference.

This game also marked the first time I had ever braved the Vaults. Had I known ahead of time, "braved" would have been the right word, too, as both Mara and Mennas were waiting for me! (Though not on the same level, thank Trog.)

Mara's curbstomping was particularly satisfying, not only because he recently crucified one of my most promising characters, but I did not even know I had slaughtered him until much later! Following this forum's advice, I had equipped a meat ration and waited for him to make his player clone. Instead, he summoned duplicates of himself. I summoned a couple brothers of my own, but I still didn't like the situation, teleported away, and never looked back. Imagine my surprise to later find Mara's name on the vanquished creatures list! Mara has mass-murdered so many players over the years, the fact that he could be killed in such a fire-and-forget way himself is, to say the least, freaking sweet.

Mennas, too, died in such a satisfying manner. Oh, I was more than a little afraid when I spotted him - after escaping from Mara, Mennas was the next dreaded unique who I knew could show up mid-game to rain on my whole parade. I was doing so well and I was so afraid of dying, I just couldn't resist spamming a massive horde of berserk brothers to deal with him. Yes, the bastard managed to strike more than one of them down, and it cost me a sickening chunk of piety, but he died without me having to so much as touch him myself. A fittingly humiliating death for such a (literally) holy terror.

Which brings me to how I also kept an amulet of faith on for almost the whole game. I know many players look down on that item, but I think it can really shine for Berserkers. Brothers In Arms is so valuable in dealing with trouble, and having the amulet helped kept my piety high, which in turn kept the summoned brothers coming from the strong end of the list. They never stopped being useful. Even against ancient liches, a turn that they're casting Abjuration (disposing of your brother with disgusting ease) is a turn they're NOT crystal-spearing you or summoning their own Fiends.

I also think that just as the RNG has sent so many of my other characters to quick and painful deaths, this time there were several places that it clearly smiled on me.

I will never forget that game my Spriggan Stalker found a motherfucking suit of gold dragon armor before the Lair. Well, this time, I found a lucky suit of crystal plate mail not far from the Lair. And for once I was exactly the right race/class combo to make the most of it! I even had enough enchant armor scrolls in reserve to get a good start on making it shine, too.

Of course, wearing crystal armor at such a low level brought its own challenge. For one, I had to sink absolutely all the XP I could into Armor, in the (nearly vain) hope that it wouldn't nerf my own melee game as much as the monsters'. Even at the end of the game, I never quite got rid of the "Your crystal plate mail causes you to miss..." messages. And now that I had all the EV of a punching bag, I also had to invest in shields to make up for it, when I had initially hoped to stay with two-handed weapons and crossbows. Nor does having a godlike AC make you anywhere near invulnerable. But it helped. A lot.

Then there was finding the Abyss rune after a mere 115 turns. I know that's not the record here, but my jaw still dropped. If only my escape from the Abyss could have anywhere near that quick. I felt seriously endangered by the time I found the exit, as I'd been slapped with several mutations, including Deformed Body (nerfing my awesome AC!).

Zot:5, for all its terrors, was also not as bad as it could have been. The goddamned draconians may have destroyed almost all my potions and scrolls getting there (one downside to picking a faith amulet over, say, conservation), but there were only three ancient liches and ONE orb of fire before I got to the Orb. Although I did reveal my noobishness when I found myself thinking "What the hell is THAT? It looks like another eyeball monster that's gonna mutate the shit out of me! ...oh wait, that's the Orb of Zot."

The run to the surface, though, was a time of nail-biting tension.

I had prepared for it ahead of time (teleport control ring, a fully charged wand of teleport, backup ring of teleport - that I could barely use - and a wand of digging), and had some idea what sort of pandemonium (pun intended) to expect, but I was still terrified of failing. After all, what would be more humiliating and infuriating than to die with the Orb in hand, on the edge of victory? And even before I left Zot, a trap sent me right back to the Abyss! Escaping that again, I was caught by a Fiend who hit me with torment before I escaped his line of sight - reminding me all too sharply that there were still things that could massively hurt me.

Yet I ultimately prevailed. Finally. I looked at an exit on D:1, approaching it with the dread certainty that THIS - the very final moment - was when the RNG was going to finally yank the football and pull something right straight out of its hairy ass to bury me once and for all. And yet it didn't. I walked through that portal to see the sun again.

And it tastes so sweet.

Despite it all, I know that my journey isn't complete. I have yet to even see the Hells, or Pandemonium, or the Tomb, or the inside of a Ziggurat, much less conquer them. Indeed, compared to those 15-runers and streakers, I must still look quite noobish.
