YASD: DrVM of Vehumet: Trying meph.cloud on a warg

There I was using mephitic cloud on orcs but a stubborn dog shrugged everything off.
I know what this meant. Orcish priests have done the same but in the end they all had to give in.
So all I had to do was to use more of the same.

After I died I looked up in the wiki what's wrong with this 'warg'.

"They are the only things in the Orcish Mines that can't be incapacitated with Mephitic Cloud. Casters relying on it should find a different way to kill them."

Such a promising character with a nice selection of rings and daggers.
Red Draconian on top of that who might have used his breath weapon.....

That mephitic cloud does not work on things with poison resistance is surprisingly spoilery. After all, despite being poison magic, meph does not actually poison creatures. So rPois just happens to coincide with rMeph+++.

But it clearly says it requires Conj/Air/Poison training...

just because it requires conj training doesn't mean it's a direct damage spell
just because it requires air training doesn't mean it's resisted by rElec
just because it requires poison training doesn't mean it's resisted by rPois

Alistair's is resisted by rPois, and this is in its description. Just like meph, except meph doesn't have this tidbit in its description. Why does Alistair and not Meph merit this clue?

So what do you think the poison component of meph cloud is supposed to be telling the player?

Alistair is the exception in descriptions, not the rule (it's also not symmetric in behavior wrt to the player and enemies.) Sting, Olgreb, Venom Bolt, Poison Cloud don't require telling the player they won't affect rPois creatures.

There were also no complaints that Meph cloud doesn't affect ice beasts, imps, jellies, undead, all of which are encountered way earlier than wargs.

I'd expect poison resistance to just decrease chance of meph cloud confusion, like it decreases the chance of being poisoned.

but these are spells that poison monsters. So yes, people don't need to be told that poison is resisted by poison resistance. And that's wrong anyway because at least venom bolt if not others still affects rPois creatures, albeit less.

As for ice beasts, imps, jellies, and undead, they are easy to understand as nonbreathing monsters, which don't breathe in the noxious fumes and thus are not affected by them, though this may not be entirely accurate. Whereas wargs are obviously just really nasty dogs.
