YASD HaHu^Fedh 0.16

I have a HaHu^Fedh who has just finished Orc:4 and with 64 tomahawks is going to transition from slings to throwing. In addition to the tomahawks I have more nets than I've ever seen in my life (an Ossurary lousy with net traps) and a blowgun and some curare and confusion needles.

I found a bookshop with five starting books in it: IE, VM, AM, FE and Ne. There are also Earth, Transloc, Hexes and Poison higher level books, and Annihilations, and I have the starting books for Wr and Cj and another high-level Hexes in my stash. Another shop on O:4 has a ring {Wiz Int+6} FWIW. There are tons of good spells in there, but I'm wary of spreading myself too thin XP-wise, since I've gathered here that with tomahawks I need to take Throwing to 27 and that's non-trivial even at +3 and with the Slings cross-training. Hexes (0.16 so I still have Enslave, all the way to Discord), Poison (Meph and Cloud and Arrow) and Tlocs (all the low and mid level ones) seem to be the schools that are best represented in what I've found.

Another option is to go into stabbing with only a few utility spells instead of taking a spell school to mid levels, since I already have a great dagger and a ton of nets and I'll have the tomahawks for damage output when stabs fail.

I'd be tempted to pick up an offensive conjuration rather than rely purely on the stab and thrown. When playing Halflings I ran much the same style as you, slings and shortblades, transferring into thrown as the game progressed (below about 10 skill slings are superior, above about 10 thrown becomes stronger). On my Halfling winner however I left thrown sitting around ten levels and chased down conjurations.

http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/celem/morgue-celem-20150506-152116.txt is for reference. I started picking up conjurations and earth magic right about where you are at now and learned stonearrow/iron shot alongside bolt of magma. If you go this path then you will want that wiz/int ring.
Note this guy used longblade rather than short, I flipped back and forth a bit when playing Ha, but this decision was mainly prompted by d1-5, I find it much easier to get out of the earlygame with lblade than s.

Im pretty sure my sblade-stabber/thrower Ha got OoF'd on Z5 despite silver thawks, which is why I did the subsequent run with Conjurations. Thrown is fully viable, especially so with a bit of silver available, but the inability to throw a javelin really does hurt.

Its rather frowned upon to build a character with OoFs in-mind. But if you cant come up with a way to kill them by the time you reach the end of the game then you cant realistically win (they are really obnoxious to avoid and work around) so....I always have them at the back of my mind. Especially on chars that are levereging {elec} brands from low damage bases for much of their power, there are a couple of serious threats lategame that will giggle at elec daggers. (specifically oof, egolem and alich, all superb playerkillers)

I would suggest a couple of things:

First, training your throwing all the way to 27 is most likely a poor use of experience. It takes a LOT of experience to actually get there and putting that experience elsewhere will give you better returns.

Second, I disagree with the poster above me. The purpose of Conjurations is to kill stuff from far away, which you will notice is the same purpose as Throwing. I would more agree with your assessment to pick up some buff spells (notably Ozo's armour, regeneration). Hexes may be worth focusing on. If you have invisibility then that can win you huge parts of the game on its own. Remember to train stealth more if you need more damage from stabbing. Enslavement also is extremely strong.

Those should be some decent goals for spells. Reevaluate when you get there.

I am Fedhas so I do have oklobs for OoFs. And in addition to the scimitar of flaming I also have a vampiric scimitar in my stash, so I'm not going to be using the electric dagger all game. The aptitudes sure suggest going stabber. Indeed I have a hunch that Ko and ha have absurd throwing aptitude precisely because they can't use javelins and need higher skill to make tomahawks viable.

Died to an Ice Field in an Ice Cave. I had gone with Blink, Portal Proj, Regeneration, Ozo's Armor, and Shroud, then added Swiftness when I found it. But three torments and an ice bolt before I can get away did me in. It was stunningly fast.

I totally see what you are saying there, but following a god that doesnt gift and being a race that cant throw a javelin makes you very limited when it comes to ammo, its fully possible for you to pick up loads of Thrown skill but be unable to actually use it except on major threats. Its a good thing it hybrids with slings, since stones are the only thing you can bank on having and I often end up slinging at trash to save thrown for a genuine target to conserve ammo. The Ha I linked was Oka, but I still wound up taking Conjurations because he was being a dick and showering me with needles instead of hawks.

I didnt really appreciate that he was Fedhas, oklobs for OoFs would probably have been fine.

Shame it ended, that IceCave ending is a real monster though, its very rare you hit it and are actually set to handle an IceFiend without taking some heavy risks.

Yes I discovered that tomahawks are weak, and long before that ice fiend. And short blades were weak too, and a +3 scimitar of flaming wasn't really cutting it (no pun intended). So both Throwing and melee are weak for small characters because of the size limitations of permissible weapons. One thing that size does not penalize is spellcasting, so yeah, conjurations make sense. I feel like slings at +4 are very powerful for getting through Orc or so, and by then you ought to have other options. But tomahawks and scimitars aren't viable unless you're lucky.

Does that seem fair, or am I missing something?

Okay. My particular character had killdudes problems though and I think I didn't put enough XP into Throwing. What skill level does a Ha need in throwing for Depths, say?

throwing uses a similar formula to UC. I would have AT LEAST 20 throwing by the beginning of depths. In 0.16 I where Ha throwing apt is +3 I would probably have 27 throwing before entering depths.

EDIT:This is if you want throwing to be your primary killdudes. long blades bezerker is a perfectly valid way to play Ha, and in that case you don't need throwing (although it doesn't hurt).

Well in that case I was definitely underskilled in it. Sounds like you need to be focusing it most of the early and midgame, which means you don't have much XP for other killdudes, which means Oka or Trog so you don't run out of ammo.

fedas is probably fine. I you can use mushrooms to survive earlygame and lair and get a min delay dagger for popcorn. you can also throw stones as crappy but basicaly unlimited ammo. I find throwing character require good threat assessment to kill dangerous stuff with good ammo and weak stuff with crappy ammo/melee backup. Blowguns are also good with high throwing.

Yes I was acutely aware of ammo with Fedhas. I even used stone on death yaks by hiding in plant thickets. But the problem I ran into was that my non-ranged killdudes was bad, so I trained LBl for a +3 flaming scimitar. But if I'd not done that I'd be at 17 throwing instead of 13,and if I'd trained throwing from the start and let slings use crosstraining I'd have had 19 throwing and 13 Slings anyway. And the scimitar wasn't good killdudes for all that anyway. So this I think was a bad skilling death.
