YAVP: My return to Crawl (MuCK, GrGl, KoWr, FoFi, VSTm)

I've been away from Crawl for a couple of years, but this week I decided to hop on back and play the rest of my unwon races/classes (plus muck because they're cool). Good fun. I played way too much crawl this week, but it's been a reminder of why I love this game so much.

It seems like Xom confusion is a bit gentler now, which has made xomscumming even easier--with a bit of luck and an early rod, a MuCK can quickly become surprisingly powerful. This one ended up being a breeze, training evocations and killing most things with an iron rod. Pretty straightforward game in the end.

After that, I wanted to push myself--I'd kept trying and failing with speedruns, but I decided to give it another shot. I went for a GrGl and tabbed my way through the dungeon in 87 minutes. It was by far my fastest win--I might try to do the same thing with a mi and see how close I can get to an hour.

From there, it was pretty standard stuff with a sneaky KoWr*Dith, a heavily protected FoFi*TSO (a faded altar gave me TSO earlygame, and it turned out to be a pretty decent choice), and finally a VSTm*Ru. The Vine Stalker was one of my favorites--neither VS nor Ru existed last time I played. VSTm can be incredibly powerful with Blade Hands and Statue Form, it turns out. By the end, I was four-shotting orbs of fire and one- or two-shotting most other things. Ru actually didn't do much that game, just because I didn't need him for anything except an occasional heal.

Anyway, nothing too earth-shattering in any of the games, but it's been a while since I've been around and I have a lot of fond memories of this place, so I figured I'd share my return story.

What were you doing with those 400 000 turns on the MuCK? Farming lair or something similar?

I'm looking at your FoFi dump and seeing annotations like "worthwhile, or the most worthwhile?" and "yay" and ":) :) :) :)". But there's no context for those. So now I'm really curious about what prompted those notes. I understand that the later annotations of disappointment are about the lack of a triple sword, though. Better luck next time!

Also your FoFi has plenty of Evocation but no rods. Was it all for wands and the stone of tremors?

Farming d:1-5 and temple. And wherever else I felt like, but mostly those. I like playing MuCK as long as I farm for rods, etc. before I start the actual fighting, and it's surprisingly effective.

Haha. I make a lot of notes and forget about them a moment later. I honestly couldn't tell you what prompted it. The triple sword stuff was half-joking and half me thinking it would be cool to have a triple sword.

As for the evo, well, um, I really like the title Formicid Blade, I knew I wasn't dying anytime soon and had do coming out my ears, so I trained it lategame as an Xp dump to keep my title.

Welcome back and nicely done to post 5 wins! I also just returned after a hiatus but I've yet to win since I started playing again despite having two promising characters with 2 runes die to foolishness.

Blade's complete MuCK guide:
1. Tab through D:1 and D:2. It doesn't really matter what skills you train until you find an evocable, at which point you should switch to evocations. May as well train polearms until then.
2. Go up to D:1 downstairs. Press 5 again and again.
WHEN the whole level becomes dangerous -> hang out on d:2 instead
3. Repeat this process basically as far as you feel like it down to about d:6 and temple and so forth. The temple or cleared sewer/ossuaries are probably the best places to hang out, since no monsters spawn there.
WHEN Xom gives you a rod, start using it to kill dudes far more dangerous than you could normally handle.
WHEN you are satisfied with your gifts (I usually like having around 3 rods--at least one that summons creatures--and whatever other junk he gives me), go to step 4.
4. Proceed with the game as normal, training mainly evocations until 20 or so and then melee skills and defenses
5. Don't die. If you've done steps 1-4 right, you probably won't have to worry about this for a while, because the right rods will take out basically everything before you have to worry about it.

Handling situations that pop up:
IF a dangerous monster spawns nearby -> go downstairs immediately, go up to different staircase, keep going (unless you have a cool rod and can just take it out. This happens also)
IF Xom teleports you -> return directly to downstairs and keep going. This happens all the time and usually doesn't matter.
IF Xom summons monsters around you (usually imps, not very bad at all) -> go downstairs
IF Xom attacks you directly -> usually you don't die. If you do... ah, well. MuCKs are pretty expendable. Return to step 1.
IF Xom abysses you... honestly, this is usually your biggest threat. If you have a couple of rods, a bit of luck, and are at least xl10, you can survive. Otherwise, return to step 1.
IF Xom confuses you, hope not to die. A lot easier in 0.16 than earlier in Crawl, because confusion doesn't last as long.
IF you get bored, realize why pressing 5 over and over is actually fun and keep going.

Bored Xom is surprisingly docile most of the time, especially when there are no monsters around. Like I said above, abyssing is the biggest threat, and a few other random things. It takes a good few tries to get going and to get used to MuCK patterns, but through the wonders of xomscumming I have 15-runed a MuCK (+zig!), streaked 2 MuCKs, and won 3 overall, so it has been far more reliable than it has any right to be.

I've been trying your guide.

It took forever (and many MuCKs' unlife) to get Xom to give me a rod. Was Inaccuracy, excellent to deal with those deep trolls and cyclops that had spawned. Then I got one-shotted by a fire giant and his bolt of fire, damn rF-. I went down the stairs as soon as he got in view but that wasn't fast enough. But Xom decided it wasn't time to end and resurrected me so I made it though!

Then I made the mistake of wandering from the stairs and met Harpies. The rod was not very useful there. I went invisible to flee but they still killed me. Xom thought things were about to get interesting so he resurrected me again.

Now I'm wondering, is there any reason to scum for rods outside of Temple? No monsters appear here so it's safe to wait for something you can use.

Well, not really. Mostly I just like having the occasional monster kick around. Adds flavour :) If you're going for safe, temple and portals like the sewer are definitely the best. If you get bored, hop out into a level for a while. The only really bad thing in temple is Xom abyssing, which is very rare and thus almost guaranteed to happen at least once during a xomscumming game.

I took a stab at this. My MuCK is still alive. Stopped scumming after first rod drop, abd found two more and a +23 CPA {rF+} by Lair. I entered Lair at 61 AC. I got the hell ending, so I just dove and killed Geryon. Then found Doom Knight in an orc shop...

This is really silly.
Really really really silly.
But fun in a twisted kind of way.
