CIP: MDFi Will he be the One?

I'm at a bit of a crossroads with this character. He's got good gear, but I'm not sure where to go first he can go further down in the dungeon or the Lair or Orcish Mines considering my recent horrifying experience with the latter I think I'll save that until after either of the former. There's an Iron Golem on D:9 he's slower than molasses so I can run circles around him and he's up in the upper area if he stayed up there. Anyways what do you guys make of this how do I proceed and what kind of strategy would work best for what ever since I'm normally a back up into a corridor and mulch casting Heroism and Finesse and such as needed since I'm a bit of a wimp about the Piety loss.

finesse costs a lot of piety, heroism does not. Use heroism for everything that is challenging, you regain the piety in no time, especially with an amulet of faith.
finesse will not be usable anyhow, you need some invocation skill for that. Use heroism!
For Okawaru it is important to stay at 5* or better as this is his gift treshold i think, everything above this is piety you can freely use.

I'd suggest that you check out the electrocution-whip, a nice brand for unstealthy characters.
Otherwise i'd stay in the dungeon for a while longer.
Note that you carry quite some unusable stuff with you: poison needles are a nice option for a non-caster, especially curare, but you need a blowpipe for them.
Same for the bolts, not much use without a crossbow. You have a bow, but no ammunition for it (and a -2 apt + a shield, not a good combination).
Scrolls of Amnesia are not very helpful at the moment, or ever if you don't want to branch into spellcasting (doubtful with heavy armour).

Lair is a bit easier than Orc most of the time, you can go there to create a stash. Stay clear from a Hydra for some time maybe, but otherwise you should be fine for Lair 1-7.
I'd say do Lair 1, clear it and create a stash. Go back into the dungeon until you feel no longer comfortable, do Lair and Orc, then.

Just a quick update I cleaned out a Bailey with ease since I had that ring of levitation I heroism'd the orc knights and used a bit of finesse. I figured out i need to stay at 130+ Piety for gifts and the cool down is 31-49 Piety. I sat up a stash in Lair 1 then went down a level in the dungeon. Where I found the bailey which had the dragonhide armor in it an orc knight was wearing it he's the one in finessed :D. I found a potion of mutation in L:1 and chugged it thus my things are slightly different. I think I could clean out the Hive but I'm not so sure I do have the poison resistance for it. I just don't want to mess this up cause this seems like a really good game.

Poison resistance has only one level, so one pip is enough. XL 11 is a bit early for an MDFi to do Hive though, there aren't many corridors down there and if the bees surround you you're dead.

2 quick tips.

Since you are Maces and Flails, your best weapon is going to be a demon whip. They only need a M&F skill of 12, so shut off the weapon skill and save exp. Also, if you're wearing armour, your dodging is going to be crap anyway, shut it off too.

(pant) (pant) (pant) Rupert almost axe murdered me I had to chug a bunch of healing potions and a potion of speed and run away from him. I tried to paralyze him and confuse him with my wands but he wouldn't take :(. Anyways here's what things look like now. I'm thinking it's time for Lair or Orc Mines or Hive but I'm not so sure. All I know is I need to stay out of Rupert's way or he's gonna axe murder me even with heroism and finesse on his berzerk is too much. I have another small ebony casket or 2 in my stash I should really use them. My mouse decided to double click and chug a potion of cure mutation thus my mutations are a bit different kind of depressing lost some good ones and not my bad one. Oh well I've encountered some ugly things I could always kill them and mutate if I'm hungry when they die or shortly after.

Derp. If I read his wiki it clearly says right there Depreciates letting your allies die (Piety Loss). Looks like more boxes of beasts to sit in my stash and never get used. Anyways is it worth crosstraining into axes if I find a good unrandart like Agara or even a randart. It would train pretty quickly since my maces & flails is pretty high. Heroism casts at Excellent and Finesse casts at Good so do I need more invocations? Evoke levitation casts at Good as well. In one of the earlier levels of the dungeon there's a huge group of like iron devils and lemures and imps and such surrounded by a lava ring they're probably guarding something but I'm probably going to wait to tackle them since there's like a hellbeast or something there that shoots fireballs and they really hurt as I ran past earlier.

Just clear Lair or maybe even Hive. Free loot and exp. And possibly Hydras in Lair. Hive is easy for AC chars with poison resistance, you can probably do it without much trouble. The bees do very little damage, so AC is really good against them. Also a great place for Oka piety.

I cleared out the Lair all 8 levels with relative ease the hardest mobs were Maud whom I zapped with wands and a 6-headed hydra that I smacked with my hammer about 4 times then it ran away and I had to chase it down. The Hive was equally easy with me never falling below 90 health or so with the exculsion of those two oklob plants right by eachother about 4 tiles diagonally but they're just guarding a little corner of H:2. Okawaru has been giving me gifts out the wazoo mostly stuff I can't use like a +4 +4 bow of frost and some not as good as the armor I have armor. The relevent maces he's given me I included as well as a nice axe I found and since maces & flails crosstrains with axes I'm wondering if that's a good idea since that's a fairly nice axe. Where to next is what I'm really wondering since the next level of the dungeon I could do has that nasty Rupert standing by one of the stairs. EDIT: It may be worth mentioning that I found a crystal ball of seeing and a crystal ball of energy. My evocations skill is a bit low to take advantage of them though.

Okay all the jewlery I have is what's listed there plus: +2 ring of dex, ring of protection from magic, ring of ice, amulet of resist mutation, ring of poison resit, amulet of stasis, ring of see invisible, and ring of teleportation. I may have wasted a scroll of acquirment trying to get a better shield but got a mediocre armor which I dumped in my stash it's like a banded mail of protection from magic. I'd love to get a better shield since that's the shield I started the game with.

Okay, bit of a problem in the Snake Pit. There's that crazy unique efreet guy throwing fireballs at me. I've retreated to my stash to contemplate things and post this. Orcish Mines were a push over. Saint Roka Agnes and Kirke all popped up in the Snake Pit and were all relatively easy with Saint Roka giving me the most trouble actually got down to yellow health and had to use a healing potion. Anyways do I run down there and fight the guy even though he just threw like 3 fireballs at me and reduced me to half health (before I swaped gear) or go do something else? I did get some nice mutations the most notable is fire breathing :D. Okawaru has been coming through with the gifts for the most part. He keeps giving me helms of see invisible +1 or +2 versions I think I have 2 or 3 in stash. I do have some freezing brand weapons namely a spear and scimitar. On a humorous note, those orcs must be avid readers due to all the book shops in their mines. EDIT: pay no attention to him being unarmed he's using that demon whip I must have clicked a bit fast and took it off. 2nd EDIT: If you want to see the full sheet I did put it on pastebin for a friend of mine to look at http://pastebin.com/KV0sZcn2 it's just the vanquished list and the milestones thing with what's here oh and that big scary efreet guy's name is Azrael.

Problem solved that gear change smacked him in the face. And with him out of the way I was able to whittle down the nagas guarding the rune and nab it and head back to my stash. What I did to the nagas was VERY cheap. I had a stairs that was about 10 tiles from where all the nagas were so I'd lure them one by one sometimes two at a time up the stairs which lead to like a 10 tile long corridor with the stairs at the end. So I could run up kill one heal up run back down. Did some mutating got a -10% health and poting armor for an ability to breathe poison now as well. Now where should I go? I've got one rune so 2 more then Zot this is my first rune :D. EDIT: I DO have a Holy Power morningstar if that needs to be used. The options are going down further in the Dungeon and dealing with Rupert or having to foot race him all the time, or Elven Halls, or Swamp...or Slime Pit. I forgot that and just now looked and saw that I could go there as well.

You don't want to have rF-. Fire is hot. Also mutating yourself is usually not very useful. You actually got lucky with what you got, but there are a few bad mutations that will completely screw you over. What you have is still not a good mutation set, but at least you have nothing that poses any immediate danger.

Swamp should probably be your next step. Swamp ends are usually not that hard, but have lots of enemies in a small area. Waking them and letting them spread out over the level makes most of the ends fairly easy. Depends on which one you get though. Note that some pretty dangerous uniques can spawn in swamp, just like in snake.

Rupert is one of the uniques that can always kill you if you're unlucky. You will most likely win, but you cant be sure. If you decide to kill him stack as much MR as you can (to protect against paralysis) and use Finesse to kill him quickly.

Okay the swamp is cleaned out with the exception of Mara and Roxanne whom I tried to kill but just decided nope not going to. Almost died to an aligator since my weapon was de-equiped got down to 2 HP it was horrifying. I got it down to like 10 health unarmed though :D. Other than that the mobs were mainly pushovers even the swamp dragons and 8-headed hydras were not much with a little bit of heroism. I got the rune and popped it down in my stash. I'm thinking that's a clarity amulet since I found it in the swamp. I derped and didn't drop my scrolls when I fought the mottled drakes so they incinerated most of my scrolls. Anyways so now do I tackle Rupert and his tomfoolery or smack some elves? I do have that rod that gives me deflect missiles so I could spam that to deal with the archers. EDIT: Piety is a bit low due to me swapping amulets to see what the other one was.

Don't take off Faith unless you have to. It's pretty much the best amulet for you anyway, except for a few situations and crazy randarts. Just use an ID scroll to identify other amulets.

I just took a little adventure going further down in the dungeon and met Snorg he almost nom'd on my corpse. Wiglaf almost got me too I had to run away and heal and then smack him he gave me that +4 dwarven plate mail with MR that I'm wearing. Anyways, I found a scroll of acquirement and popped back to my stash cause I was getting full. What to use that scroll of acquirement on is what I'm wondering I'm thinking jewlery since that's the only thing that doesn't have randarts yet. Also do I go down further in the dungeon and play dodge Snorg on D:15 or Elven Halls?

Everyone has an opinion on acquirement scrolls. Here's mine.

If you go for jewelry, make sure you have identified every piece lying in the dungeon or you'll get a ring of levitation or something. As far as I know, Jewelry acquirement gives you a piece that you haven't identified, so if you haven't identified a lot of jewelery, your odds of getting something sucky increase.

You were right I got a ring of protection from cold. Anyways did some dungeon diving got down to D:19 and found the vaults. I fought some deep elves and they were a cake walk it was down right laughable does that mean I'm ready for Eleven Halls? The hardest guy I ran into was some kind of shifter that almost ate me I managed to run away and I think he's still alive somewhere in D:19 but nowhere near me. Anyways I could run back up to my stash and grab stuff if I need to right now I'm sitting outside the entrance to The Vaults. So D:20 next or Elven Halls or Vault or Slime Pit which I do have that amulet of resist corrosion for but that only mitigates the damage and doesn't make my stuff immune to it if I understand correctly.

Definitely stay out of Slime, given that you're depending on your gear for some important stuff (most notably running). You'll end up with a lot of -4 equipment even with rCorr.

You don't need to be carrying nearly that much food around. You're asking for a giant spore to ruin it, particularly those royal jellies. Ditto for the enchant armour scrolls and the restore ability potions, though it won't be a spore that gets them.

If you have ID scrolls to spare, ID your teleport wands so you know the charge count. You don't want to expend a turn on CLICK-CLICK-empty in a bad situation. Ditch the confusion wands as anything worth using them on at this stage has enough MR to ignore it, at your Evocations skill. Use the frost, flame, and magic darts to victory dance Evocations, so that you have some more spell power behind your rod spells (notably Abjuration).

At this point it's a tossup between Vaults or Elf. You have SInv, so that'll make things a lot easier in Elf. You don't have conservation, so the elves will shred your scrolls and potions, though. Elf down to 4 wouldn't be too much trouble. For Vaults, ask yourself how you would deal with multiple missile-firing attackers in an open area. If you don't have a good answer, stay away. If you do, give it a try. Yaktaurs are no joke and Vault offers little cover.

Agreed with the 'fox on staying out of slime. Slime is one of the toughest branches, and if you dip in and discover that, you'll probably end up with a lot of trashed gear.

You have boots of running! That is sooo huge. Take it slowly now, and don't forget to run away if you're in danger. Good luck!

Yea I ran into a sheet ton of slimes and if Slime Pit is ANYTHING like that I'd best stay away until all my gear is +5 and can't be corroded. I kid you not like 60 slime type critters behind a door in the dungeon had to run away and still got my shield and helm obliterated by their acid spit. I do have a backup shield but I wouldn't have any RPois but I'd get some RCold so I'd have to swap weapons back to that hammer that gives RPois instead of my Demon Whip if I needed RPois. I do have a replacement helm that's pretty much the same thing SInv +2 or so. Yakutars were pushovers for me to fight when i threw on some heroism but I did lure them around corners which I can't do in Vaults I take it. So probably Elf next unless I want to play dodge slime and do more dungeon or put on throwaway armors since I left a bunch of gear laying around in Snake Pit it's all like glowing branded mail and glowing maces and such. I just don't want to run into a cursed item then I'd be boned. I do have deflect missiles from that rod to deal with arrow shooters. Yea I ran into some harpies too and had to toss my food out so their fat butts couldn't nom on it. EDIT: OMFG stupid Elves stop mutating me they gave me berzerkitis AND dropped my Int even lower now I have to use that hammer or I have 3 INT. I'm halfway tempted to cure mutations or put on my resist mutations amulet. Berzerkitis can be kind of good as long as it triggers at the right time then I'm a death machine but if it triggers at the wrong time (which it just now did and I wasn't in any extreme danger after I threw heroism on to counteract the negative effects). Gah stupid Elves I'm goin to bash all your skulls in with my hammer now D:. 2nd EDIT: Okay I found a shop in Elf:3 that sells a VERY nice randart trident. Polearms crosstrains with maces&flails and my high strength will make getting the skill up quick and easy. I'd have to get my amulet of resist mutation since the trident is {+6 +5 pierce, MUT+ +Lev rPois rF+ MR Str-2} they want like 1/4 my gold for it but I got pleanty of gold and nothing to spend it on. 1395 Gold out of my 4049 gold. Taking stock I'd get three resists +leviation +loads of raw power from pierce at the cost of 2 strength and mutation and having to train a new weapon. Oaky gave me a cloak of posion resist but it's not +2 and dwarven like my old one.

Ouch. Pretty tough set of mutations. Bezerkitis is something that you probably need to cure, and yes, I think your right about needing to swap out the amulet of faith for resist mutation. Okawaru will understand =)

Don't get that Trident. MUT+ means it causes heavy glow, and glow mutations have a 50% chance to go past rMut. Also glow makes you explode. So you won't be able to use it for any extended amount of time. Just stick with your demon whip.

Face FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFing palm! YASD! I did Elf:5 like a derp I was doing well until an annihilator got me finally when I was half health. This game just likes to tease me like that. Oh sure we'll make the first little bit of Elf:5 easy as cake and we'll even give you a corridor before the room filled with elves. But we're going to summon 500 demons and then kick you when you're at half health with a bunch of fireballs. Gah those guys summon SOOOOOO much I had no clue it'd be THAT bad I found myself surrounded several times on Elf:4. Gah this game trolled me I demand a replay :D. Well here's the final I'm going to include the vanquished and notes just to show how much of a beast he really was until that stupid annhilator got to him. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFU I'm still irked about it though but expect another character in about 5 seconds since I'm a glutton for punishment. :D

Elf:5 is really dangerous. I lost an MDFi there too, to bounced lightning bolts and a hellion summon.
