My original plan was to keep it simple and just follow Elyvilon, and maybe switch to TSO for the end game. I was planning on sticking to Inv/Evo, but maybe dipping into Charms/Translocation for repel/deflect and apport/blink. I am happy to keep it to 3 runes since it would be my first victory (my closest so far is a XL21 DDNe with 1 rune).

I had been pretty unlucky with weapon drops until recently, using a mundane battleaxe for the last few levels and a mundane broadaxe before that. However, my first scroll of acquirement yielded a +5 executioner's axe of chopping, which I quickly upgraded to +9 with the scrolls I had been saving. I am a fair way off mindelay, but it is still way better than a +0 battleaxe. Then I found a +0 vampiric battleaxe and it really threw a spanner in the works. I am very tempted to switch to Makhleb for the HP-on-kill and vampiric combo (which I really enjoyed on my DDNe) and because the necklace I recently found {Spirit +Fly rElec rC+} would actually be usable (since Makhleb doesn't need MP), but I don't have much experience with switching gods and I'm worried about the wrath effects. If the Elyvilon punishment info on the wiki is correct, my carried weapons would lose -3 to -4 total over the wrath period (assuming 25 punishments), so I would need to find a temporary axe to make it worth while. Not to mention the scariness of a poorly timed confusion (I presume it is not resistable).

To complicate things, I also recently found some pearl dragon armour, so I am also tempted to move into a hybrid caster build (necro or earth), but I think my INT (11, base 8) might be too low for it to be viable. Also, my current randart scale has superior resists - even if the AC is starting to lag - so this might not be an optimal move.

I realise that for other players this probably looks like an easy win from here no matter what, but my experience with rune branches is very limited, and I am still unable to recognise some dangerous situations (e.g. my DDNe died when an otherwise toothless lich made 5 gold dragon simulacra out of the corpse I had just made). I would appreciate any opinions on the viability of the following directions I could take my character:

    1) Stay the course: Dump the vamp axe, necklace and PDA and stick with the original plan. The executioner's axe will see me through.
    2) Go hybrid: Dump the vamp axe and necklace, keep Elyvilon, pick up Earth Magic and upgrade/wear the PDA
    3) Turn to the dark side: Dump PDA, wear necklace, dip into Depths for a temporary battleaxe, stash other axes, dump Elyvilon, pick up Makhleb, then upgrade and wield vamp battleaxe post-wrath and switch to executioner's axe in demon/undead heavy areas.
    4) Go full evil: As 3) above, except dump necklace, upgrade/wear PDA and also pick up Necro
    5) ???

My personal preference is for 3), but feel free to tell me if this is a dumb move. Any advice on handling the wrath would be appreciated.

I would definitely not learn necro or earth spells with this character. Melee with vamp battleaxe + exec axe is very good. You need higher axes skill and better armor and dodging. Put stat points in dex from now on.

Vamp and Makhleb are probably worth switching to from Elyvilon. I haven't experienced Elyvilon's wrath in a game though.

I think I'd keep the scale mail and use enchant armor scrolls on boots, gloves, cloak. Common advice is to use EA scrolls on boots, gloves in any case as soon as you can. I don't do that. But in this case I would, at least 1 on boots and 1 on cloak.

Glad to hear that going hybrid is a bad move - makes the choice a lot less complicated.

Yeah I was tempted to do this a few times, but my AC always felt sufficient (until recently), and the boots/cloak/gloves felt very temporary.

I haven't tried a DD^Ely after the changes, but I have very little doubt that Makhleb + Ely's wrath is much easier than staying with Ely, even without the vampiric axe.

I'd also caution against trying to switch gears and go hybrid. It can be difficult to avoid gimping your primary fighting skills in pursuit of secondary casting skills. And it's hard to overstate the security of high AC v. low AC.

Were it me aiming for my first win, I'd stick with a fighter and probably switch between the vamp and exec axes - vamp for less dangerous critters to help keep hp up, and probably go with the exec for anything genuinely dangerous that needed to die quickly. Others might disagree regarding the utility of vamp v. more dangerous mobs, but I think avoiding the damage in the first place is better than healing it up after with the vamp effect.

Spirit shield is terrific for fighter types, even more so for DD fighter types, and avoiding the hybrid route means you'll have your full MP pool as a shield.

As for a diety, I almost never god-switch, but in past runs with a DD of Makhleb I've personally found the need to hunt down and hit something in order to heal incredibly annoying. Seems like it would be a much smoother option to stick with Ev's anytime heals.
