[Another Lame Necrologue] Sprugn the Spriggan Enchanter

Specialising in Ice magic and some Enchantments.
Has some nasty battle magic to help him in between stabbing the unwary, and is lucky to have good magic protection. Even Kirke could not affect him.
Had a nasty encounter with Agnes the Spriggan Fighter: tried to confuse her twice, and twice his life depended on a wand of haste. But even she had to sleep, and this was her weak spot Sprugn was fast enough to sting at.
His ability to fly saved him a lot of life in The Shoals: perhaps leading Saint Roka into the deep waters was not the wisest solution ever, but Sprugn was reckless enough to try this. The rune was a bit hard to lay his small soft hands on.

Among the threats in his current pinch of seconds are:
Mennas in one of The Vaults, speechless and awe-inspiring as the retribution of his master, Zin;
and Boris, the tales about whom haunted our little Spriggan since his young years - only his soft careful feet and his trusty dagger can possibly help.

Pick up haste and repel/deflect missiles, start working on a nuke spell (ice storm, maybe orb of destruction). Abjuration is nice, too. Maybe swap mephitic cloud for alistair's intoxication (especially useful on vault:8). And find some fire resistance, for the love of Sif Muna!

I'd be thinking crypt next - you've got full life protection and dispel undead (bring a staff of death if you have one). Just keep your distance and spam dispel undead, maybe keep a holy wrath branded weapon handy. You might have some trouble if an ancient lich decides to start summoning, though - without abjuration, an Executioner would ruin your entire day.
Vault:8 is maybe plausible, but you're very squishy. How many flame/frost-branded crossbow bolts does it take to make a spriggan pincushion? On the other hand, you're set for dealing with shadow dragons and storm giants.

If you *still* don't have at least rF++ by the end of both branches... curse the RNG, and maybe try scumming the Abyss or something.

As for Boris and Mennas, well. Again, you're *very* squishy right now. I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if you could one-shot them if you catch them napping. But it's even easier to let them sleep.

He has both Deflect Missiles and, unless I'm mistaken, Abjuration in the books in The Lair. The only problem is that his current memory is not enough to remember both these two spells and Alistair's Intoxication without losing some quite good spells like Icicle, Fly, Butterflies and Apportation. Do you suggest to forget some of these, like Fly?
And, in addition to that, Intoxication hardly can replace Confusion when it comes to confusing the undead.

No staves of Death that he remembers about. Perhaps one can be in The Shoals? He did not clear it well enough when he got the barnacled rune.
There are two staves of wizardry he knows about. Could they work well enough?

The magic scroll detected a closed shop or a portal just a few dozens of steps away from Boris: this could be that Abyssal portal. And finding a weapon of distortion (there was one on some nasty deep elf...) doesn't look like a good idea.

He does have a scroll of holy word and a blessed dagger could be somewhere in the dungeons.

Handy thing: You can CTRL-f search for spell names, and it will find the spellbook if you have stashed it somewhere.

Shadow Creatures calls the creatures native to this level, it can be very strong in Vault 8 or Zot. Personally i like it very much if you have some preparation time, in the midst of combat it may be a bit unreliable.

My preference is never to forget spells like fly. You can never have too many ways to run away! I've never found enslavement to be particularly useful. It doesn't help much in one-on-one fights, and doesn't make allies fast enough in a bigger fight. If you decide to do the extended endgame, you'll eventually want to dump invisibility as well, since after a point nearly everything important can see invisible.

Intoxication isn't to replace Confusion, but to replace Mephitic Cloud. Both affect the same monsters, but Alistair's affects *every* non-poison-resistant monster in line of sight, can't be resisted, and is much quieter. It usually has two down-sides - first, unlike Mephitic Cloud, *you* can't resist it with poison resistance, and it always affects you - but you can resist with clarity, which you have with the amulet. Second, 5% of castings will cause temporary loss of 1-3 Int, which is not particularly severe unless you're spamming it like there's no tomorrow.

If deflect missiles is too expensive, repel missiles is still a nice defensive buff that makes it easier to dodge or block missiles, bolts, and some breath attacks.

You've got enough spell levels right now to either pick up abjuration for the Crypt (ancient lich summoners) or to grab repel missiles and swap meph. cloud for alistair's for Vault:8.

The staff of death provides a power bonus to necromancy spells like dispel undead. It's a nice boost if you have the option, but not necessary. Staves of wizardry only provide a bonus to the chance of success.

It's much less useful to Sp who don't benefit from the flight/swiftness combo since their already at maximum movement speed.

Alistair's only affect humanoids. I do agree that it makes a good replacement to mephitic in the mid-game.

After some searching in the Crypt and defeating an ancient lich, Sprugn suddenly found a Zot trap beneath his feet.
The Abyss was not too friendly. The rune, however, quickly appeared close to him.
The serpentine rune was not too hard to obtain, thanks to the spells for conjuring flame and frost.

Looking at the three runes lying on the scratched floor of The Lair, Sprugn started to think about the possible travel to the realm of Zot, even though he hadn't even found the gate to this place.
Must he continue destroying the undead and exploring the Vaults, or must he already hurry to the Orb? He does not feel strong enough to reach it at the moment, though.

He found a rod of summoning, though it is possibly of no use.
There is a good collection of books in The Lair, and he has three runes at the moment.
The rod of fire has proven to be a bit helpful against silent spectres.
Intoxication is truly impressive against regular opponents, as his cloud and icicle. Perhaps he should switch to conjurations?

i would suggest that you do vault anyhow, with intox the entrance to 8 is not too hard, and the loot is valuable.
facing orbs of fire without fire resistance at all is not a very good move. While stabbing is great i would look for a weapon with more base damage to fight against regular opponents, a +2 dagger will not cut it against dragons and giants.

Mennas is frightening. Sprugn has a wand of paralysis, but should he read the scroll of vulnerability to make it deadly?
He has a ring of fire and fire protection. Though it's not very much. Do you suggest make him run through each and every embroidered robe in the Dungeon?
Should he find a good sabre of flame or speed and brand it like there are seven Norrises outside the Lair?

Nope. Walk away for a few thousand turns. Find a nice dagger. Come back and hope Mennas is asleep (and after that much time, he should be). Hope he stays asleep and stab him. With a dagger and Stabbing 14, that should one-shot him.

Yes. Grab a big pile of them and burn a detect curse. Magic resistance from an outside source isn't of much use to spriggans in most cases (though every bit helps when you've got banishers around) as their natural MR is pretty high.

Not speed if you get a few more levels of Short Blades (14 for a sabre). Hope for a short blade (any kind) of pain with that Necromancy skill. Flame would be your anti-hydra weapon but not the best choice for general purpose. Electrocution is nice, but loud.

Actually with Alistair's Intoxication and Freezing Cloud at your disposal Elven Halls seems like it would be a fine place to be. I cleared them with my level 18 SpEn and Poison Cloud a few days ago (I had Haste and DMsl though, which helps a lot). Just use the cloud spreading through corridors to create unavoidable deathtraps the enemies will have to cross to get to you and keep enemies out of sight as much as possible. Elf is always potentially deadly at low HP, so you probably just got unlucky. 38 damage is a huge hit from a master archer.

Oh true. But there were even more than that around him, and for some reason ne could not control his teleportations - even a simple Blink was impossible to land somewhere. Or at least his mind has decided that he should *press* on to some Space instead of paying attention to all the thoughts coming to his brains.
