I didn't just win; I conquered the game. Nothing could stand before this character. Caustic shrikes cornering him on his first visit to U:2 was the single most unnerving event in his career. The level 26 Tomb zig floor of one last full zig run, while already in possession of fifteen different runes, was less stress, even after the CBoE drained him of all MP following a triple torment.

Certainly not a terrible character.

See, this is what I'm talking about in that thread about meta stuff. Turncount analysis and metrics are part of the meta game, and have no bearing on the winning the game of crawl, beyond the obvious and trivial food clock considerations. One who plays the game to enjoy its features can be expected to take the time to "play" with those features when they become available. On the other hand, one who plays for maximizing metrics can be expected to dismiss such considerations. Furthermore, to get fifteen runes, you need to find six of them in randomized levels, which means turncount totals are going to fluctuate broadly due to nothing more than brute stochastics. In this particular case, it took three separate, seemingly endless trips to the depths of the Abyss in search of that one rune. If turncounts guided play choices, one would almost be required to join Lugonu immediately upon finding the altar there.

One more thing is that I played 0.16, in which stat drain is fixed by - you guessed it - turns. The deplorable lack of quantity of that potion in this particular game required the repeated mashing of '5' in order to even continue, in some cases.

Finally, at long last, it's actually fun to use the stuff one finds, so there's no harm at all in maximizing one's enjoyment of the spoils. I didn't have to go to Pan to find a zig to dive before exiting with my fifteen runes. I did it because it was entertaining.

In the rpg view, all wins count. In the meta view, some wins can be dismissed.

Is there any way to reconcile the views, or should one dominate and the other recede (as seems to be happening)?

Just to be sure, there was no offense intended in my previous post... Just pointing out that being able to get a 15 runes-zig win doesn't make OgWz relying on Conjurations a good background, but rather that it's possible to do it and become powerful.

A good UI can make the game easier... I tried some console games but failed many of them because I wasn't used to those graphics...

I can't agree about this, because of : CBoE, Sif, staff of energy, SoB, Wucad Mu, Vehumet...

That's true, but in most my 15-runes games (no intense speedrun), I can find all extended runes in ~30k turns...

IMHO, the obvious reason why one view dominates the other one is because this games involves some competition among players, and there's no metric that shows how much fun you had :D

I guess the question is "what makes something a good background" The difference in opinion for what constitutes "good" in this case is why there's so many disagreements over this silly topic.

If you're qualification is "Can survive the early game easily" you're going to have a different set of "good" backgrounds than if your qualification is "Can eventually become uber powerful"

For instance, if you ignore all XP and "time to find items" considerations and presume that the only thing that matters is how you end up, OgWz looks pretty darn good, because they have more HP, access to GSC/GC+large rocks and can still have good defense (they will have a lot of strength, and can therefore wear some of the heaviest body armor in the game and still have reasonable access to spells) and can eventually get any skill to 27. If you start putting in limitations like "What they might look like before say level 7" they aren't nearly as strong (Or even "What would they look like if you did no grinding and did as short as possible for a 3 rune game"), because they take a lot more XP to get spellcasting apts up, and have poor defenses in the early game.

It's certainly possible for a OgWz to primarily use conjurations, and in the early game it's certainly easier to do that with some other races. And certainly in an unlimited game, OgWz will end up with more Hps than most other races. Whether that makes OgWz "good" or "bad" depends entirely on what criteria you are using to judge it.

Out of curiosity, what looks bad about it to you?

Personally, by this point I would want:
1. More AC, I'd probably have gotten more armour skill and less dodging and be wearing a heavier body armour. (I'd probably not be using the hat of the alchemst, 4 more AC would be worth dropping the extra resists IMHO)
2. A better weapon, by this point I'd hope to have an eveningstar or dWhip and not a morningstar, Or possibly have given up the shield entirely, at melee range a good GSC is probably better than a shield, even if you don't use your melee as your primary attack.

Still, 31/21/14 doesn't look like *terrible* defenses to me for a character who specalizes in dropping fire storms on stuff, particularly when you have an extra 100 or so hps cushion.

i think 1h+shield is perfect if you just want to cast spells anyways and have low defense otherwise.

It's relevant because the halfway point was on the predetermined road to this. I'm one of those sacrilegious players who set future goals and play toward those, rather than eking by on whatever Crawl parsimoniously tosses my way in pursuit of the Sacred OP. It's a pretty simple conduct that I choose to try creating winning Wz characters for each race, continuing one-by-one until I have done them all. That's why I'm playing it, for this personal challenge alone.

This was the 60th iteration of this character. Next up was Ghoul (which I began before Og, actually, but somehow ended up on that track), and after dying I mistyped the species selection and ended up with Tr, so now I'm off to build a TrWz, which looks to be even more difficult, so far.

trying to win every wz sounds like a fun conduct, go for it! with most species, the road will probably be easier if you train more melee/fighting/dodging a bit earlier (you ended up doing this eventually anyways so i assume the conduct doesn't forbid it), but it's certainly doable either way.

if you want to measure the effectiveness of each combo without worrying about turn count, another way could be to look at the number of tries it takes you to get there. not that you have to if you don't find it meaningful.

i'm somewhat confused about the word "predetermined". are you saying that at that point in time, the character had a 100% probability of winning with 15 runes?

Oh, heck no. (although I had a really good feeling about this one.) By predetermined I meant spell list and, for the most part, inventory list. Certain things I use, certain things I don't bother with. I suppose an additional (though not completely inflexible) part of the conduct is to attempt the same flavor of build with each species, to the extent possible. Certain adaptations must be made, though, and that's just how I'm going about it.

I do look at the number of times it took to win with each. My first, and first ever win, was DE, and that took more than 150 attempts. Fo was inexplicably the quickest, at only 16 attempts. But that number is only in competition with myself, no one else, if that makes sense. And it's not even a real competition, because I'm not sacrificing conduct for reducing the number of attempts.

The way this started is with your thread about caustic shrikes being too much for depths. This character was the yardstick in that thread, imo. Well, it's not a particularly strong conjurations-user or a very good ogre, imo. It's a mishmash of the two that inevitably has shortcomings at certain parts of the game. What Siegurt's saying about the asymptotic potential of ogre spellcasters is on point, imo, and for the purpose of that asymptotic analysis, the amount of xp this guy got was a lot closer to infinity than 1. My first 15 runer was a MiGl^kiku with totally silly spellcasting skills. Still won, easily.
