CIP->YAVP: OpFi^Ash with some serious AC

I'm usually too impatient to play melee octopodes as the early game makes the dungeon look like a map of minefields, but I like to try anyway. I usually splat against a monster I know I'd better not fight at that point but do it anyway.

I picked Ash as it was the first altar on my shortlist, the others being Dith, Oka, and Makh. I found an earlyish EV+3 ring and some resistance ones, but hit the jackpot in Orc after having succesfully cleared D and Lair:

Having MR+++ I decided to clear Elf next and it didn't disappoint by giving me yet another AC ring with some resists to boot:

I now have a total AC of 24 (3 of that is from mutations) and I'm yet to visit the Lair rune branches. I've never had an octopode even close to it. Also there's a book with statform for sale, but I don't think I'm in a hurry to buy it.

I have a nagging feeling this game is going a bit too well...

Re: CIP: OpFi^Ash with some serious AC

I now have 3 runes and Zot cleared. No problems whatsoever so far. I traded some AC for resists and better damage output after finding a nice set of artefact rings in the Crypt. It's easy to know that the ring set is ridiculously good when you can't find a slot for the ring of Shaolin {EV+8} as an octopode...

I reckoned the gear is too good not to try to go all the way and started training up UC to go with Blade Hands and Statform. Not that it would've been strictly necessary after getting an eudemon blade from Mennas in V:5, and having Spectral Weapon to boot, but statform is especially useful in Hells so I thought why not. And SW isn't as great with a sword as it is with polearms because it doesn't help you in corridors.

This has been my first game where I've used Ash's knowledge transfer. I used it to move skill points from xbows, which I trained up with a manual, to UC. ~2k free skill points right there. For minmaxing I've considered using an otherwise worthless M&F manual for the same purpose.

This is also my first game, IIRC, where I've used a large shield. It has good synergy with statform as you do damage like with a great two-hander and still get to keep the shield for defense.

Zot had 13 OoFs and it's hard to beat hasted Blade Hands for pure damage against them. I was lucky not to get a single bad mut from them, and killing them fast surely helped. At least a couple of them went down in three punches.

Buying and memorizing Phase Shift is up next to complete the spell set. Abyssal rune is the likely next stop, and then Pan or Slime I reckon.

I was interested to see its effects on damage output so I ran a few fsims with or without the shield. AvEffDam vs a death yak:

It looks like it adds about 10% damage. Figure that 3 points of EV is 10% greater damage reduction factor. So shaolin is better (provided the enemy's attacks can be dodged).

Thanks, Berder. I've always liked your numbers-heavy approach.

Yet I wonder, is there a point after which one just has enough defenses and it becomes more desirable to max out damage? I was tabbing through a bunch of orb guardians, and in the end didn't bother to isolate the fights, as even a group of them didn't do that much damage. I'd hazard a guess that the worst danger in the extended yet again comes from hellfire and torment, although the latter is reduced to just 17.5% of HP in statform + rN+++, and the main defense against those is just HP and careful play.

Although I can clearly see the value of EV+8 in Blade Hands which melds the shield and lowers my defenses into a mediocre category.

I'd also consider the rN dex+4 ring to be worse than 8 EV, although replacing the strength one first is probably correct. You already have rN+, so rN++ isn't that big of a deal, and if you are in statue form that's another rN source as well. Shaolin is a very, very good ring.

There is a point where your defenses are so good you don't really need more of them, but in the case of a statue form octopode, your offense is going to be great anytime you're using unarmed, so it isn't like you'll ever be dealing too little damage to have to worry about it. If you really want to replace the dex ring instead of strength though, that's probably fine. Your dex is very high (31 with ring) so you're getting smaller returns for it anyways.

In every case EV+8 results in a better damage ratio, but the received damage is so low that it doesn't make a big difference. With Str+6 one is bound to one-shot a little more often, with EV+8 one dodges more often. I'm not expecting to use BH that often rather than use the eudemon blade + SW + normal form to deal with most of the undead, and switch to SF+UC when the situation warrants it.

I went on and fsim'd fights against the hardest hitter I could think of, Antaeus. I wouldn't expect to BH the dude, but ran the numbers anyway out of curiosity.

So in SF+SS form the damage ratio is almost identical, but assuming 700 HP (from wiki), I'd kill the dude in ~2.5 less turns with Str+6. EDB+SF+SS works really well here as well, and with Spectral Weapon it could even outdo the SF+SS combo, although I haven't maxed out UC yet. These sims were done with the skill levels of my last dump (UC 24, Shi 22.1).

To complete the overanalysis, I also checked the results of tasonir's suggestion and ran the numbers where I'd switch the {rN+ Dex+4} ring to {EV+8} and keep the {Str+6}, with or without rC++.

A combination of Str+6 and EV+8 is the superior choice vs the toughest melee dude in the game.

Removing a pip of rN results in receiving 10 more damage from a torment at max HP, or 5 in statform. Those are higher than anything in melee, but torment is rare enough outside of Tomb and not wearing an EV+8 ring with an octopode is a sin, so I'll make the {rN+ Dex+4} -> {EV+8} switch. The only thing remaining now are 12 runes...

OpFTW! Finally I found the secret tech to win an octopode, just raise AC over 20 with rings and mutations early on, pick up haste and statform, tab for the win.

Ash was good from the midgame on, first with the skill boosts, and later she made the Pan and Hells much smoother as the portals and downstairs were much easier to find. Monster detection helped to tack on all the buffs before engaging the tough dudes, although all but statform, stoneskin, and haste were not really necessary due to the ridiculously great gear.
