YASD DEFE - zot/zig issues

PostPosted: Friday, 17th July 2015, 23:46
by ajon
Found a +4 quarterstaff of speed, read Id an enchant scroll to +5 now. I have 4 more EW scrolls left so I could make it a +9. Is this a good use of my scrolls or should I wait to find an elemental staff and a shield? Down the line, is lajatang good for this char or does it take from the shield defenses too much?

IMO definitely wait for a lajatang. Quarterstaff of speed is pretty good, but not really what I consider an endgame weapon.

Alright, where I stand now. Any skills Im under/over invested in? I have a few armour options too, Im thinking the robe is good overall as the leather doesn't change my defenses too much and I have rC+ with the robe.

I have stashed books with c blink, fire storm, glaciate, ring of fire (any good?), delayed Fireball, and a bunch others so im good spellwise, just waiting for a good non-elemental damage spell. I do have poison arrow though as a fall back

Like you said, your priority now is a non-elemental damage spell. Stone Arrow or Iskenderun's Mystic Blast would work for now. Iron Shot or Orb of Destruction would be just perfect. As a temporary measure you might consider grabbing an ice spell such as Throw Icicle, since many enemies that are immune to fire are vulnerable to cold.

Poison Arrow is great too.

You need more fighting skill (gives you more HP).

Though it's not a priority, your main spell now is Fire Bolt which takes an equal amount of fire and conj, so you want conj skill to be equal to fire skill.

Ring of flames is excellent, and you might choose to rush to fire storm once you have your non-elemental damage taken care of.

Is bolt of draining worth taking since Veh is offering it, or is it covering the same spot as fire bolt too much

edit - I also have LCS in a book but its a bigger investment. See if Veh gives me ood, would be great

Nah, I wouldn't bother with bolt of draining since e.g. efreets are immune to both neg and fire. Poison arrow is way better.

I would enchant the q-staff of speed. ?EW are generaly plentiful, and a +9 q-staff of speed can outdamage a +9 lajatang, especialy with DEFE stats. Elemental staves cannont be enchanted, so if you switch to one some time later the ?EW would have been useless anyway.

Lair and Orc done. Started Elf 1 a bit, and I am down to Swamp 4 and have the Lerny end. I'm wondering if FCloud will work ok on it or If I should use fire bolt/fireball?

I could also amnesia something and grab OoD If that's better?

Freezing cloud will work well - like a normal hyrda, it has cold blood and will be slowed, and will take heavy damage. Still, I'd be tempted to leave that ending until quite late in the game, unless the escape routes are very clear and close. If that beast gets next to you, you're dead.

Either way, I'd amnesia something (airstrike looks unnecessary?) for OOD - thought I wouldn't use it against the hydra. You don't currently have a good damage dealer against resistant enemies. OOD but fills that slot pretty well. Probably would have been better to hold off memorising Fire Storm, tbh - it won't be castable for a while, and then you could keep your whole spell set.

I could amnesia firestorm too, I have it in a book. I was keeping airstrike for smite targeting things like weavers but I guess a bolt spell/F Cloud works just as well if not better though?

Speaking of which, is OoD or iron shot the better choice? I could also grab LCS but it also wont be castable for some time.

both are good spells.

OoD:single conj-Lv7 so you don't need earth skill. hard to use in corridor
iron shot:conj-earth Lv6 but 10 earth is maybe ok

generally earth magic is powerful and has a versality. petrify, iron shot, statue form, LRD, are all great.
and if you want to go to 15runes at your DE, you should get shatter after onlining fire storm.

Yeah I ascended an EE once, it was a really strong spell school on its own. I wont be doing any extended for a bit. Focusing on ascending different races/classes and really getting good at the main game for now. I do have one 15 rune win so I know I can but I want to get to the point where I can consistently win a 3 rune game.

I snagged OOD for now. I have used iron shot before and its nice but I feel it misses often enough to be noticeable. OoD is a bit tricky in some situations but I can generally control where I am. Its a bit slower play but I'm feeling that, if I am careful, I have a bit more control over when to fight/run as a magic heavy approach.

So the next question, Should I stay in robes or look for dragon armour? Im assuming I want to stay really light for fire storm eventually. I currently have a swamp dragon hide though but I already have rPois, and I would lose my rC+. Havent landed any mottled/steam/quicksilver hides though. I do have stone skin but haven't seen Ozo's armour.

If you want to wear medium dragon armour, you should raise str.
But your str is 5. very low, but it is normal str as a pure conjurer.

I recommend robe and train only dodge, but raising 2str and wearing quicksilver dragon armour is not bad(the real problem is to find quicksilver dragon armour, though).

Just found the -2 hat of the alchemist. Is the hit to my already low AC worth all the resists? I thought it used to be a +2. Kind of a bummer to see it was made -

QDA warrants Armour training. Higher base AC=more benefit from armor skill. Imo steam DA would be best but mottled or swamp DA would be better than QDA given his str. Troll leather might not be bad either.

Think of it as a way to consolidate your wearable slots. If you've got nothing good to fill all the slots that it frees, then don't use it. Typically it's a good deal.

Current snapshot.

Firestorm is up and running. Haste/stone skin/swiftness/repel missiles are all online. Not sure if I should drop swiftness. Seems like it could be useful when mp is too low for haste and I just need to flee.

Found lajatang of speed in Elf to replace quarterstaff of speed and I enchanted it up to +7.
Found a robe that would give me one more pip of rC at the expense of MR and 1AC, but im thinking one more RC isn't as useful as one more AC and MR. Though if I use it, I can use my fire staff and grab a shield but with such a heavy investment so far, would it make much difference for my spells?

Thinking I will push fighting/dodging for a bit.

I have controlled blink but im not sure what to drop for it. I dropped OoD for firestorm as I was using P Arrow almost exclusively instead of it.

MR+ and +1 AC is a lot better than an additional rC. Not sure on the first pip of rC. It probably depends on the branch you are doing. Your MR is a little low.

Died in a zig... to a jumping spider. Well he was just the last in a series of events.
I made it to zot 3 but had to use my last healing potion and I hadn't found a wand of healing at all that game. I had to dodge one OoF that I couldn't manage to kill. I felt really underpowered overall. I decided to hit a few early zig levels to maybe find some healing and cure mutation potions. Was doing fine until I came across a floor with some Ubuntu, a tormentor, a reaper, and some holy monster that I hadn't seen before. A few fire storms and some shadow creatures killed most of it. Managed to melee the holy creature out of necessity and was running from the last reaper. Thought I would be safe descending and healing without moving but some draconians showed up. So I had to invis and c blinked when I could see the stairs. Descended again to a spider floor. I ended up using lignification to try and finish them. I probably should have used my blinkscroll /c blink to the out portal instead. I can only imagaine the mutations I was going to wrack up though.

Anyways, I couldn't figure out the best way to handle zot monsters. Fire storm was nice but it was easy to run out of mana. Fire bolt was ok but didn't seem as effective. Iron shot missed a lot. Shadow creatures was great if I got a pack. Otherwise, it was a gamble. I ended up meleeing a lot of creatures with haste, stoneskin, and my lajatang of speed. Any advice on surviving this part would be helpful for the next try. All in all though, DEFE was pretty fun, but I can see why melee centric is considered better than leaning heavily toward magic.

Too bad, you had a winnable character and were 2 levels from the orb run. If you needed gear (you don't), you should have gone to slime. The zig was a bad idea and diving instead of escaping is a bad idea^2.

OOD is good vs orbs of fire (you have it in the Book of Power), but honestly I've never had problems with using Iron Shot on OOFs with a DE^Veh with their gobs of MP.

Re: YASD DEFE - zot/zig issues

Maybe I just had a few bad rolls while trying it. I wasted a lot of MP missing it. I was also playing around between the shield + fire staff for resistance, and the lajatang for offense. Yeah, I really should have escaped. I think I can roll another one fairly easily. I don't think that I had anything insanely great or rare other than the speed lajatang. I think Ill keep OoD next time instead of P Arrow and iron shot too. I had considered bolt of magma too. It looks like 45% would be irresistible and the damage is comparable to iron shot on the upper end, though it looks more variable.

Just noticed that you have literally 0 Earth magic which probably explains why your Iron shot was missing a lot and doing only moderate damage when it hits. A few ranks in side schools are cheap, if you're using an earth spell like iron shot or LCS you need to get some skills there. Fire/Earth particularly has great synergy in the mid game mainly due to bolt of magma being a great spammy spell before you can spam bolt of fire, if I find the spell on an FE I always mix in some earth into my training routine.
