well, a bit of background. started playing DC:SS at start of month, haven't won yet. starting to get the feeling for it finally.

this game has played out well. thought i might even try for a 15-rune win for my first victory. seemed possible.

everything was going swimmingly... until a few hours ago. picked up slowness-2 and heal slowly-2. not a good combination. throw antennae on that so i can't wear my dexterity/intelligence/damage boosting helms, and, hell, a frail-1 just for fun. not a potion of cure mutation in sight (i think only one so far this game--spent the last two hours hunting the Abyss for one) and the RNG hates me and has been making things worse with further mutation potions.

so, need some advice now. do i:

1) abandon the 15-rune attempt, and simply run (crawl) for Zot as i am now (i suppose pick up Poison Arrow or Orb of destruction or sth in this case)?

2) i'm still pretty new at all this--Dis beat me up pretty badly on my first few entries--i was going to do Hell without Necromutation but now i've reversed plans and started using Banish Undead to build up the skill. a few Tormentors tilt the playing field too quickly for me. is this because i'm not using enough offensive spellpower?

3) is it time to abandon Vehumet? and if so, do i switch to Zin to build to a clear mutation (don't wanna really, as i like to play stabbity-stabbity), or Jiyva and see if i can clean up the mess (although the slime pits are causing massive headaches because of slow healing-2 now)? Or do i court Nemelex and play the Helix game? and, not that i'm thinking of doing it, but does Chei check against your 'species' speed or against your 'actual' speed?

4) any other character advice or commentary on spell selection etc. would be appreciated. the 'basic' branches are all cleared, save the Slime Pit and Tomb. i'm sitting at 4 runes right now, have pretty much every spellbook, wand, evocable item, etc. in the game (missing, of course, the high end staves). i have a ziggurat i can enter but i'm scared to try at this point--i've never been to one or to Pan.

5) Down around D:25 or so, i have a completely enclosed metal room--yet my previous passive mapping mutation indicates there's something inside. there's no secret door. what gives? i can't seem to smash the wall with Lee's (that's also why i'm not wearing my optimal jewellery config at the moment, as i was tossing stuff around) (Lee's reports that the wall has been smashed but nothing actually breaks)

cheers,
Q.T.Quazar

Re: CIP - Decision Time (HEWa)

Umm, did you not turn off skill training for any skill at all? As you currently are, I see hell as going very badly for you. First of all, turn off all of your weapon skills except fighting. Second of all, work on building up the spellcasting skill.

As for your mutations, the best cure is often more mutations. Mutating tends to cause you to lose mutations if you have a lot of them, and right now odds are in your favor that the ones that are lost are the ones you want to be rid of.

Right now, your biggest issue is lack of resists. Torment halves your health instantly, but you save 5% of your health with each level of rN. Even if you went to Zot, Orbs of Fire in Zot 5 would maul you due to a lack of rF.

As for gods, I wouldn't switch to Zin for just the clear mutation. Jiyva maybe. I'm confused as to why you went with Vehumet in the first place, since you don't seem to be focusing on Conjurations or summonings. Overall though, I'd say it's largely a matter of personal opinion. And Chei checks against your current speed, btw.

As for spell selection, at this point you can get rid of mephitic cloud. I might also pick up shadow creatures. It's good for tomb and zot. I'm pretty sure I would've died in Zot 5 without it.

With the enclosed metal room, did you check all the stairs? You're not going to break metal walls with LRD unless it's at nearly full power. You could just try to cTele into it.

For this message the author Tiber has received thanks:

Re: CIP - Decision Time (HEWa)

Your weapon skills are way too high; it is not worth raising them beyond the level needed for minimum delay.

Ah, thank you. I wasn't familiar with that concept.

You have pretty bad intelligence for a high elf; you should pick intelligence over any other stat if you are casting spells at all.

My equipment store allows a pretty wide range... I can go up to maybe 40 or so, I've just been enjoying meleeing to this point, but i know i'm going to have to switch to a more spell-based approach sooner or later. Or do you mean I should be pumping it into my raw stats every 3 levels? I hate not being able to carry anything at the start of the game (and no, i'm not running around with 20 loaves of bread and a complete pharmacopia like i am now)

You are carrying too many potions and scrolls. Carrying more just means that fire/cold attacks can destroy more. You really don't need to carry more than two or three of any one potion/scroll at a time (and often only one is fine).

Actually, with proper battle prep, i don't find my equipment being destroyed very often. I know i don't need the whole stacks--before i was just leaving it on Hive 1, but since i have ample STR now, i figured 'why not?'. I suppose if i shift from DEX/STR/INT to INT/DEX/STR priorities I will have to dump a lot of this though (i actually have more of most of this stuff back in the Hive, anyway, so i'm not especially worried about it being destroyed. Torment and Vulnerability I've left behind, since i'm not really sure when it's appropriate to use them, and everything seems to resist Immolation by the higher levels)

Lee's Rapid Deconstruction needs pretty high spell power (between 8 and 9 hashes) to have any chance at all of destroying metal walls.

I think I have 6 hashes with my meagre 2 Earth Magic skill, combined with a staff of earth. So, you can still get success messages even though the wall doesn't break? Is this because it's fracturing it, damaging nearby monsters?

Nope, I've left everything on. This character has decided he wants to be a jack-of-all-trades. That's just how he roll... plays.

Yeah, that was my logic, but since then my problems have gone from 1s to 2s, not to mention the stupid antennae. As I said, the RNG seems to be punishing me for having too much fun this game. The main problem now is i'm not sure what i should be doing to create more mutation potions. I can't slum around the Abyss safely anymore with my crummy speed, and the dungeon is cleared. Should I be waiting for ugly thing spawns or...?

Right now, your biggest issue is lack of resists. Torment halves your health instantly, but you save 5% of your health with each level of rN. Even if you went to Zot, Orbs of Fire in Zot 5 would maul you due to a lack of rF.

I have full rN and rF if i equip for them. I can power them both simultaneously, with one at 2/3 and the other at full.

I chose Vehumet because my character doesn't like praying, maybe because he got tired of grandma Okawaru mailing him yet another sweatsuit for Chirstmas, or even more useless pick-up sticks. He likes butterflies though. He loves to frolic through them, frolicking rapidly in the opposite direction from whatever is disintegrating said butterflies behind him.

I've been invoking Air Elementals with a fan so far. But I see your point--that spell would be pretty potent in Zot. I was considering replacing Mephitic Cloud with Poison Cloud, but maybe it's not worth it at this point?

Re: CIP - Decision Time (HEWa)

If you make it through Zot, bank your win.

I lost a LOT of crusaders with a cleared orb chamber because I pushed for too much.

Slime is brutal the first time you do it. So is tomb. I've never actually made it to the base of a hell, but i hear it's pretty rough.

Those skills are a mess, really :? . What I find most puzzling is: how does a Vehumet worshipper ever finds himself in need of using bows? An option would be to abandon Vehumet for Ashenzari and reskill the hell out of your character. But if I were you, I'd just stack up on rF and bum rush Zot:5 (the sneaky ninja sort of bum rush, though)

My guess is what you actually wanted was Makhleb ;) Unless you're really roleplaying a character that doesn't pray, since Makhleb does want corpse sacrifices. He would, however give you a lot more that Vehumet currently is (that is, next to nothing, although his wizardry bonus might come in handy to compensate you low summoning skill in case you decide to use Shadow Creatures)

Don't bother with Poisonous Cloud, while it's not completely useless in Zot (non-green draconians, storm dragons, killer klowns and orb guardians among others are not immune to it), there's far more useful spells, like the aforementioned Shadow Creatures. And Haste. For the love of god, learn Haste. Also Controlled Blink if possible (you're a warper, after all :))

Re: CIP - Decision Time (HEWa)

thanks all for the help. for the record, my wonderful warper got shredded by 4 Sphinxes in the Tomb. looks like i learned something about the importance of MR today. or maybe just to carry around the amulet of stasis when i come back next time.

Re: CIP - Decision Time (HEWa)

Or don't engage multiple sphinxes at once. A single one can give most characters fits. Four at once (for various values of "at once") sounds like a nightmare.
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.
