After winning my first game as an HOBe I would like to play a character who can do a bit more than killing everything with an huge axe. Tried a pure spellcaster (DrCj) but was always killed realtively quickly (around Lair) and it was really annoying to run out of MP regularly. Now I started with a Merfolk Gladiator, ideally I would like to have a character who uses melee weapons as main attack but is also able to go for ranged attacks and some spells (I guess haste, blink or something similar would be nice). Do you have any suggestions for the skilling? Polearms is clear (Merfolk without Polearm is bullshit), but I have no idea about the defensive skills. Should I train dodging and armour parallel to reduce encumbrance or is it better to focus on one source of defense?

What are you saving this for?
Anyway keep training Polearms. Sling is worth keeping around, but not sinking xp into.

I wouldn't train stealth now, Str 17 allows to use heavy armour.
My previous char was
MfGl too, I used scale mail at XL 10 and +3 plate armour of rF+ at XL 12.

Thanks for the hints, my hero is now in lair and worships Okawaru. I found a chain mail with +3 slay ans SInv now. So I'll probably wear this for a long time and train armour instead of dodging. Is shields still as underpowered as it was in earlier versions? Otherwise, I would stop training polearms at skillevel 14 and change to shields.

Shields are pretty decent - especially if you can manage to fight one on one. Of course you still want decent AC/EV. But with Merfolk aptitudes you can shoot for a large polearm (bardiche~) at mindelay pretty easily. Tie that with the excellent dodging aptitude and I'd ditch the shield.
Of course if you find Maud with a demon trident or something that's all up for consideration

My next "real" try seems to be more successfull. I grabbed the two easy Runes and the next step will probably be the Elven Halls or the Vault. Since I would like to do some more difficult branches this time, I guess I should now start to worship The Shining One. After gifting me two slings and tons of useless armour, Okawaru doesn't deseve my worship anyway.

I would wear that MR ring instead of Wiz in the Vaults/Elven Halls.
Don't switch to TSO yet. I would go Vaults 1-4, Elf, Depths 1-5, then Vault 5 or Slime, then Zot 1-4.
If you want extended then switch to TSO and go Crypt. If not then just finish Zot 5.

Now I'm trying an Abyssal Knight. Seems to be quite funny. After opening a treasure trove, I found the amulet of rMut I was really looking for and a crazy amount of white rings. Do you have any suggestion which one I should wear?

A lot of those rings have some pretty bad drawbacks. The ring of the shadows is very good however. You also have a lot of MR+ items, so yo might be able to use a single MR- peice of gear. Personally I would just use the artefact ring you have now and the ring of the shadows.

Yes I agree that most of them have some drawbacks. Especially the random teleport on this ring with rF++,rC++ is annoying. Probably the Ring of Shadows and the one I wear is really the best option except for some special situations. By the way: Sorry for the "Me"
@Sandman: I didn't find it. But normally I try to avoid stasis since it prevents me from blinking.
