YAVP: Mummy win finally

I've been working slowly toward winning all races, and given how lousy I am, some races have really caused me a lot of headaches. Mummy wasn't really one of these, because I assumed it would be terrible, so I've actually only played a few. Imagine my surprise when this guy ended up being relatively straightforward. Granted, RNG helped a lot (pain lajatang, great armour early) and Mak helped a lot, but it was a pleasant change of pace to have an easier time of it than anticipated. Now I'm down to just Dg, Op, and Fe -- any recommendations on making these easier (Dg in particular has been a real bugger for me so far)?

DgIE. Start off only training ice and freeze everything, at level 3 memorize oz's armor and train just a level or two of charms, then prioritize memorizing ice beasts and getting it to like ~25% yellow failure.

From there you can train defenses, melee, or more magic, based on what you have found, and where you want to go with the character. You probably want to pick up some cheap points of EV from dodging before Lair (I always do), but honestly oz's armor can carry your defenses a long way on its own.

You will want to get throw icicle, it is an excellent spell, but I've always been more successful getting summoning first, as your beasts are very strong even with fairly poor spell power/success and low max MP.

I'd... probably also say OpIE.

Well IE is probably the strongest background for most characters after Be, so it makes sense.

FeBe definitely plays differently from your typical Be, because even with the extra HPs and damage from berserk, you can still be too frail to risk melee against quite a few enemies you would normally have no problem with under Trog. So if you keep trying FeBes and they keep going bust, you may want to switch strategy and do more of a "keep away" with lots of kiting with magic. It may be the case that FeCj or (yet again!) FeIE better suits your skills as a player.

A lot of people often recommend FeBe, but I had bad experience with this combo. I think the main problem is that you cannot ever use stoneskin, ozo's armour and statue form. In my opinion, BY FAR the easiest way to win with a Fe or an Op is to find, learn and use statue form.

With Dg, you should probably try to pick a background that gives you a road to Zot even if your finds are not awesome. IE is strong, yes, and FE is also very good. Tm looks good on paper, but in practice it is a letdown: Tm is an xp-hungry start, and all Dg aptitudes are negative.

I'd second statue form on Op/Fe. Granted it's not as easy early on, transmuters are a weak background, but if you do survive the early game you'll be in pretty good shape. You can easily start as a monk or EE or anything else and pick up defensive spells as you find them, of course. Ice form gives you some decent defenses but it doesn't hold up well unless you also find ozo's armor (in which case it's awesome).

Dg I like Conjurers, just because that spellbook will itself last you until around level 20, but you can certainly go IE and hybridize as well. Conjurers are slightly more focused, which helps with dg having poor aptitudes, all you need to train is conjurations, spellcasting, and a little charms for battlesphere. Once you can actually kill stuff you can get your fighting/dodging/weapon skill going.

FeBe is ok, it just requires a lot of patience. You need to very careful with positioning, at all times. I had to do it on the way to becoming a greater berserker, or I would've ctrl+q around the beginning of depths.

I don't know if you like summoners, but I found DgSu quite good. The starting book carries you quite far (most things die to a lightning spire, 3 ice beasts, a guardian golem and a warg). But DgIE is of course a very good choice.

I guess you mean it is terrible. When a very good player says that something is "OK", that is a bad sign. A good combo would be called "very easy" or something like that :D

My second win ever was a FeBe that switched to Jivya. FeBe lets you berserk until your second life, and has a great toolkit through the entirety of lair/orc.

Congrats on the win! I'm doing the same - currently only Fe and Ce are left for me :3 And I agree FeBe seems very hard during actual play - much, much more difficult than octopodes.

Until/if you get statue form - and if you decide to focus on melee - you'll rely on EV/SH as your defense with octopodes - this works just fine, but tends to lead to damage spikes. So more so than any other race you have to be careful about luring and keeping an escape path open.

Oh. And have fun with deep troll earth mages in the depths. Not having a corridor to fight is kiiinda problematic with squishy, normal speed octopodes ;)

I did win a DgTm - but as Magipi said, the aptitudes suck and I had rely on a lucky find (vamp +11 short sword) before UC and Blade Hands finally started working. After that they are as powerful as they seem on paper. But I wouldn't recommend it. Any caster start seems fine to tide you over until midgame. DgSu is probably one of the easier ways.

Thanks to all who popped in with advice (and good luck to Zwobot on getting those last two wins). I tried a couple of non-Be felids, and that went even worse for me to start (of course, I know enough to know that could just have been those particular starts), so on a whim I started up a FeBe. Died once early, but now I'm in Lair. Found a manual of Stealth, so (again, on a whim) turned that on as well as UC. My memory of other FeBe starts is what Xentronium said -- it gets irritatingly tedious later, which of course is what kills me, as I'm just bad in general. Still, we'll see how it goes from here.

FeXX^XX is terrible. The issue is finding the least terrible Fe.

I'm going for the same challenge myself, with an OpIE^Dith at the moment, and I can thoroughly recommend this build, since:
a) Shadow mimic is awesome as you can cast low-level spells (freeze, throw frost etc.) and get a free shadow shard thrown in 50% of the time at max piety, allowing you to conserve SP. Throw icicle + shadow shard has taken me right the way to xl27, taking out vaults (inc 5), lair+branches, orc, depths and crypt - never found bolt of cold, but I didn't need it.
b) You can get some serious stealth with Dith, and shadow step + stabbing gives you an extra line of attack.
c) OA is great - gives you +13 AC at full power, which owns if you only have 8 AC to start with
d) Dithmenos likes it when you kill fire sources, which ties in nicely with your need to avoid getting your OA melted.
e) Ice beasts are hefty allies up to and including lair, and always give you distraction-stab opportunities and retreat-covering.
