I really don't want to splat this guy, he's got tons of potential with all the stuff(Poweful branded sling, spellbooks with useful spells, loads of tele scrolls, reflect buckler, ring of wizardry) he's found in so little dungeon levels and I would hate for such a promising character to die because of me being dumb. My main problem really is my lack of AC, I've found 8+ tele scrolls which have saved my ass thus far but they're not gonna save it forever. When I fight a even slightly threatening monster (E.g. sky beasts, ice beasts) I get to low hp very very easily, giving me doubts about his survivability. Luckily, I found regenerate in one of the spellbooks which has been a big help and has saved me from death by orc warrior + shadow imp very narrowly. I sorta have a phobia of wearing heavy armor on casters though because I don't want spells I've relied on to crash in success rate. Advice would be much appreciated as I feel If I play him more I will definitely die.

Re: CIP - HaAM, too squishy

It's squishy because you have no Fighting or Dodging trained.

Dagger of elec is a great backup weapon.

Re: CIP - HaAM, too squishy

For starters I'd turn on Fighting, you need the HP and im pretty sure its used for ranged accuracy as well as melee.

To be honest you have little in the way of offensive spells, enslavement perhaps. I'd be tempted to move up into ring mail, switch off slings and turn on shortblade. You have a dagger {elec} which is a top-tier weapon and a strong SBlade apt. If you can still Slow in scale mail then i'd even go that far. It wouldnt be so bad if you had some accessory slots...

Dont forget the buckler needs 9 skill to train off on a Ha. But its not a priority, I prefer to just power through with spell skills and go fix up that Shields skill later, especially since you already have Wiz. Your dodge will want to rise some before you start fixing Shield.

A promising start, play safe, soften stuff with the sling and then whack it with the dagger.

Re: CIP - HaAM, too squishy

You're missing the final ] on your code block.

Swiftness can probably help you get away from sky beasts and similar 10 speed monsters, but make sure you're somewhat close to stairs so you can escape before the -swift penalty kicks in. Overall you look pretty strong with that sling, you want to just keep doing the standard skilling: raise your weapon until it's killing things well, then train some defenses. I think min delay for slings is 12 skill? After that you'll probably want fighting and dodging, to make you less fragile. You could train some of them beforehand if you want, you don't have to rush to 12 slings, but 12 slings doesn't take long with +4 aptitude. I think it's 7 shield skill to have no penalties from your buckler, and you can train a bit more magic skills as well after your slings and defenses are trained.

Don't be afraid to use bullets/branded bullets for tough threats - stones are your most common ammo but slings are not the strongest ranged weapon and you'll need the boost from better ammo for tough targets.

I'm encountering more monsters which get me to low hp and force me to tele, which one gives better returns in a shorter amount of time ; fighting or dodging?

Re: CIP - HaAM, too squishy

No idea, I would just train both. Probably Dodging is a bit more important though.

Do you use Hero? You should!

Edit: also stat gains should go in Dex.

Even though celems advice about getting scale mail and training short blades was really useful, I still splatted such a promising character. After the finest crawl play I've done (without any tele scrolls , blinking etc somehow didnt die at very very lowhp vs a massive horde of enemies with no corridors while I stairhopped and ran around for ALOT of turns until I was safe.) I thought the coast was clear, yeah no. Ran into a hill giant so I went down some stairs, there was a orc warrior waiting for me. If I had HW or pretty much any good consumable, I could have easily survived this encounter. But I didn't. Bummer. Its definitely my crappy play that caused this but I felt like I was playing a qazlal character at some points because I'm pretty sure I aggroed and killed every single monster on a level when I went down some stairs near the lair entrance which caused me to run around like a headless chicken for a very long time with low hp.

Re: CIP > YASD HaAM, too squishy

You could've probably survived if you used Heroism and trained more Fighting and Dodging instead of Short Blades. Hero gives +5 skill, you didn't really need 12 to get min delay, and your defences were awful. Also I am not sure I'd use a scale mail on this char, seems like it'd be easier to get EV in leather. With Hero and Dodging training you could have over 20 EV I think.

Yeah, my awful defences definitely contributed to this death, when I play AM again , Ill probably do hexes to 6 > slings to 5/10> fighting + dodging . This is a learning experience I suppose, even though this char had pretty nice items generated ; It still can't save me from crappy play.

Re: CIP > YASD HaAM, too squishy

Honestly when I play those "weird hybrid" chars like AM, Sk, Wr, I just cast the spells I can cast with my starting skills if they can give me advantage (so definitely Infusion on Sk, maybe Blink on Wr, and AM has... Corona, right?) and skill them as melee (or ranged) characters until Lair or so. I'm not sure this is optimal, but it's easier than balancing between a bunch of buffs or hexes that don't really do damage on their own.

Re: CIP > YASD HaAM, too squishy

How far away was the hill giant when you spotted him? If you had at least 4-5 tiles, you should be able to quiver your strongest ammo (probably just a sling bullet, steel sling bullet if you have any though), and with a +8 flaming sling and heroism, take him out in 5-6 hits. Heroism would put you over 12 for the min delay, so only 6 aut per shot. If he appeared 5 tiles away, after heroism he's 4 away, you still have ~7 shots (4.2 turns/42 aut) before he gets into melee range. He should be dead or nearly dead by then. You might have to spend a few turns in melee hitting him with either more sling bullets or the elec dagger, but not very long.

If you came around a corner and he showed up 1-2 tiles away, that's more of a "time to run" sort of deal, but one spotted far away is something you should be able to kill. 12.6 short blades is more than you need for a dagger's min delay (10 skill). I'd have probably not trained short blades or trained them to 5 or so (min delay with heroism up) and trained fighting/dodging for more survival.

Running away is a good general idea, running down stairs rather than up stairs is always risky.

Re: CIP > YASD HaAM, too squishy

Crappy defenses aside. You cant toe-to-toe with a hill giant when you first meet them with anything but a plate-clad combat beastie. Shooting it down may well have worked as pointed out, but if he gets close you gotta be fleeing. If something then pops up behind you...yeah thats hard to escape from.

I do tend to follow much the same course as Sar, if you dont start with and intend to continue using offensive spells then I pretty much flat out fighting and a weapon skill along with dodge/armour as appropriate. Support spells work so much better when they are supporting gear you know how to use. Unfortunately this leaves you behind the power curve vs a pure melee start, but thats the price you pay for the specific gear/books/statline/skills you picked to start with.

The advice to go to scale was based mostly off the 'dont get hit, but if you do, maybe the gdr will take the sting off' school of thought. It does kinda nuke your dodge if you havent started training it yet, and the moment I go above Leather I start running Armour. But I find it quite handy for those moments where something wallops you (ogre you didnt see, gnoll with halberd) and you have to eat some damage.
