CIP- Dragon Blooded the DrTm, exploring 0.8
First up, initial reactions to 0.8:
I immediately wanted to disable or minimize the new commands bar, because I initially found it kind of garish and distracting. I've since gotten over this and started ignoring it like a sane person. It's probably a good thing actually- allows for mouse control and will even teach new players the important keys for menus.

Immediately wanted to disable the new "Found a <foo>" messages when new floor trash enters LOS, because it seemed like pointless message spam. I've since gotten over it, and now like the feature! You don't have to mouse over the check for artefacts, you're told automatically. Heck, it even tells you what items under plants are!
Notice a pattern? I initially hate everything. I may only be in my 20s, but I'm an elderly, change hating curmudgeon at heart. :p
Tons of new flavor text, especially with casting. I really appreciate the way this has improved summoning- there are now custom messages for when different things are summoned and when they expire! (at least with sticks to snakes, and summon imp. Haven't tested many others yet). It's surprising what a little text can do to improve the quality of the game.
Quasits look like little monkey demons now! Actually, there are a lot of new monster tiles. The shark ones are particularly cool.
Speaking of tiles, lots of ego and enchanted floor trash have new ones to separate them from the mundane stuff. This means my internal 'artefact radar' was going crazy with false positives for the first hour or two of play. "Different tile! Artefact, get it! ...oh, wait no it's not." times 200 or so.
The porcupines kind of threw me. When I found a new monster, I expected a gimmick. I didn't realize we needed another generic lair beast. Plus, they're damn near invisible against the new lair tiles.
I like the new statue tiles, and they make for some nice entry vaults. However, it would be really nice if on mouse-over you were told "a granite statue of a(n) <foo>" instead of just "a granite statue". I'm guessing this is because in the vaults they're just defined as statues, and tiles just randomly applies different skins to them.
Sticks to snakes finally lets transmuters swap from unarmed to b - arrows with '. Whoo-hoo!
I like the new lair floor tiles. It makes the lair look much darker. It could use some patches of moss or something to green up all that rock though.
Being able to check your aptitudes for skills you have at level 0 is convenient. One less thing I have to leave the game to look up.
\- is very convenient, although I wish there were shortcut keys to only show one type of time at a time. \-! for example, would be nicer than scrolling until all the unknown potions are on screen.
Spells come with noise descriptions now! Although it would be nice if you could check these without the books- I think they'd be most useful if you were in a stealth-dependent situation and you really wanted to check which spells were safer to risk. Although I suppose you could always just use ctrl-f to look up the books...
Piety on the main screen is massively helpful. Saves me from about a million ^ presses.
Autopickup will now stop before burdening you! This is massively cool. Although, I'd like it if ',' would warn you if something is about to burden you, really pick up, y/n? Right now you have to watch the weights yourself.
Character driven Stuff:
I've wanted to fiddle around with new and improved draconians for a while now, and I've also wanted to give transmuters another go since I used to play them radically differently, ignoring the forms completely to spam evaporation. Here's what I've learned so far.
Spider form seems a bit of a glass cannon. Yes, your unarmed attacks are better, and the poison is great, but you really can't take much of a beating, even with the evasion boost. All your equipment merges, and you lose your scales- taking away pretty much all your AC. Still, it's your most powerful combat option pre-temple (before you get ice beast up and going), and it does make a good escape option.
Ice beast is, well, a beast. Seriously. You are ridiculously unstoppable in this form. You resist posion, you do massive cold damage, you keep your scales AC, and you get an HP bonus. And you can eat / butcher! Gets even better once I found ozo's. I cans see why everyone swears by this form. It makes hydrae trivial! Cleared the lair pretty handily with it. And since I lucked out and didn't get the shoals, that means I can use it cut through the Hive, Swamp, and Snake too.
Not impressed with blade hands yet. I haven't used it much yet, mostly because of the hunger and because I've yet to find a situation where ice form isn't better. I'm guessing it starts to shine later, when lots of things have elemental resistances, and you can't afford to merge equipment and lose boosts / resistances. ...or when everything can cast fire.
Acid resistance seems to suck. Despite being a yellow draconian with a cloak of conversation, I still took massive damage when I meled the things I found guarding the entrance to slime. Still, I'll be interested to see what happens when I get dragon form up and going- I don't think I've seen an Acid Dragon before in crawl, so I'm not quite sure what's going to happen.
I haven't had condensation shield long, but I'm disapointed to report it still seems lousy. It's more expensive than the awesome ozo's armor, and the same level as the incredibly awesome ice form. But all it nets you is a very short lived 10 shield points or so. I think I'll end up forgetting it. The spell really needs further improvement- it should be at least as effective as a buckler to be attractive, and the duration really needs to be extended. I think part of the problem is the dependence on the shield skill, essentially making it a triple schooled spell: ice/tmut/shields. Meph is powerful enough to merit 3 schools. Condensation shield isn't. Maybe it shouldn't even be a transmutation spell?
Picked up ignite poison. I figure since I have Hive, Swamp and Snake ahead it'll be handy- especially now that me and my inventory are immune to the effect. Plus, it should go nicely with evaporating potions of poison...
I really should figure out how to add arrows to autopickup. Can you do if statements in the autopickup options? Something like "IF(Sticks to Snakes Known), autopickup arrows".
Lair end was a new one- very swampy with lots of vampire mosquitoes (redundant much?). Found a labyrinth at one point- magic mapping put it on the other side of an open level from me. Lots of running in swifted ice form, and there was a hydra blocking the path! (before I discovered ice form ate hydrae for breakfast and was still afraid of them). Had to run around the map nearly twice, floor dance, and dig to the portal from behind to get around the hydra. The timers seem to be much more generous now.
I rediscovered why I love spriggans so much. The chunk game is awful. Thanks god for gourmand.
