Tasonir's .16 tournament writeup

So I've been lazy and putting this off, but I usually do like to reflect on the characters I played in the tournament, so let's take a stab at this. Full morgues in links, only the top summary in code blocks. Most of these characters were affected by the double damage bug, as was everyone else.

First character out of gate was notable: Gargoyle fighter of Cheibriados

Could have easily been a win, but I wanted 15 runes and paid for that decision in Gehenna. Was worn down getting near the hell lord when a fight was winding down with only two hellions left, I managed to kill the first one, but then had one hellion still 4-5 tiles away with ~20 hp. I figured quaffing heal wounds should be pretty safe in this situtation, but the hellion got two actions (they are speed 12) and double hellfired me for high rolls of roughly 30 damage each time, so I still ended up at -8 health. Probably should have just slouched a little bit earlier on. You win some, you lose some.

TrCj was a nemelex combo, hence the odd background, and I didn't end up doing any conjurations. I sadly also didn't win it fast enough in real time to actually get the +75 points, but a win is a win. Found statue form early on but didn't find stoneskin until some time later on, but I used statue form in the mean time anyways. Escaped with 5 runes.

I couldn't get all of my wins with Chei, and okawaru was already worth close to zero points, so I went with Qazlal, a fun god who is powerful and also worth some decent amount of tournament points. Was a fairly straightforward game, was really fond of the black knight's barding once I found it....14 ac before armor skill from the barding slot is basically insane. I tried to force regeneration even though I had 11 int, which wasn't that impressive and probably could have just skipped spellcasting entirely and gotten more armor/dodging/fighting. This was a win streak of two.

Probably my favorite character of the bunch, this guy was just a wrecking house from start to finish. Vine Stalkers have a tendency to do that, though. Found statue form and singularity, breezed through most of extended. Found seraph in holy pan, one of the few fights that scared me, because I didn't realize ahead of time that you can't abjure his allies (TSO protects them). Instead had to controlled blink next to him, take him out quickly, and then his summons poofed. This same thing happened on the orb run - another Seraph spawned, although this time I knew to not bother abjuring and just got next to the seraph asap. I guess he isn't considered a unique :P While I wasn't technically speedrunning, this was a fairly fast game and landed me the necromancer high score for the tournament. It was also the first VSNe win, worth 20 team points.

If you've made it this far by now, dear reader, you can probably tell that I didn't really put as much effort into diversifying my god wins this tournament as I have before, being more happy to just keep stacking up the best god in the game ( :twisted: ), Cheibriados. This was my 4th win in a streak, and earned me Cheibriados' Slow and Steady banner. I recall the early game being pretty touch and go for a while, with several fights that had real chances of killing me. One bad spot in particular was an early orc warrior while I was injured and too weak to kill one, and a good 20-30 tiles away from stairs. I had just taking up chei and had a move speed of around 1.3 or 1.4, but I managed to successfully drag it all the way back to the stairs with a gecko, and the gecko being faster than the warrior, was the monster next to me when I took the upstairs and I was able to kill the gecko and heal up before moving on. Eventually the power curve worked out in my favor and the mid to late game went smoothly. This character and my previous VS both learned singularity, although they cast it 5 and 6 times each, so I'm not entirely sure it was needed. Although with merfolk aptitudes, I had 27 unarmed/fighting/dodging, so I'm not entirely sure what else would have needed the experience. This was also the transmuter high score for the tournament, as most people are smart enough to not play transmuters, even if I never got the memo.

Unfortunately the streak ended there, as this gargoyle ran into ijyb with a wand of flame and died in exactly 3 zaps, despite me luring him to a corner, my offense wasn't going to take him down in less than three turns sadly. If only that impressive early chain mail had been rF...You'd think 15 ac would be enough to negate most of a wand of flame's damage, but such is the nature of random damage rolls :)

Wanted to move on to magic, and I had an explicit goal of fully clearing a ziggurat. Didn't get terribly much benefit from the double damage bug here, and could have won with the 4 runes I had, but I didn't really have an answer to a late mummy floor. Necromutation might have helped somewhat, but even then I'm not sure that taking 50+ mummy death curses would really be survivable. Floor 26 with -Ctele is an extremely large swarm of mummies. Decided to go out in a blaze of glory firestorming the rest of the pack, and Bennu's explosion got the final kill credit for me.

Following this I tried a few OpSu's who were a nemelex combo, but died fairly early on, and a naga who also died. Then I decided to branch out god wise, and take a god worth a lot of points at the time: Beogh.

Being absurdly strong and overconfident in your character + gang of allies doesn't help you very much when you're in an ice cave and cannot bring your allies with you. Also, doing an ice cave with rC is always dangerous, but I was feeling gutsy and went for it anyways. An ice devil (or maybe it was two?) made pretty short work of me.

I gave Beogh a few more tries, and this was my other notable Beoghite, but ultimately meet a dark fate down in the depths at the breath of an iron dragon. Couldn't find an armor I was happy with all game long - never found an ego plate, didn't bother to enchant my plain plate higher than +4. This wasn't an equipment issue though, it was a completely blundered charge into a vault which had all sorts of nasty monsters in it, including hellions and liches. The main cause of death here again was cold damage - I had taken some absurd amount of damage from an ice dragon breath before I swapped in that cold ring, I think I was hit for around 80 or so damage in a turn. I was about to teleport when I died, but sadly didn't last long enough to see it take effect. My allies had some impressive weapons, with a vamp and a pain polearm on two warlords as well as some other decent items. My own +4 plate was in fact recycled from a plate one of my allies had worn, the enchantment came from beogh's blessings.

I couldn't go out with only those four wins to my name, and never win a naga. I had to continue to justify the existence of my guide, so I fired up a naga monk for my final win. I don't recall the exact timing of the double damage fix, I think this character was after it, but it may have been started with it and ended without it. Found a crystal plate armor, didn't cast very much but did learn blade hands, and rode my excessive AC and damage to a quick 3 rune win.

Final thoughts: real shame that I didn't win that first gargoyle - a 5 win streak in the tournament would have been nice, and it would have been a 6 win streak overall, as my last pre-tournament character won. After the four win streak I was up around 12-13 in the overall player rankings, but I didn't have as much time to keep that pace up over the next weekends, and several characters I expected to win (at least one beoghite, the mage who was supposed to clear a zig) ended up dying instead, which is rather bad for staying near the top of the rankings. Still, ended up at #59 on the players ranking, with 3066 points. My zig dive to 26 was still worth 130 points to the clan, so there's that at least. My clan Pansmokers had originally been up around 4-5th place early on, and although we fell to 10th, that is still high enough to show up on the overview page :)

There should be a special banner for doing your slow and steady banner with 75% Cheibriados wins.

Are there supposed to be multiple Seraphs? I also just recently had a 15-Rune win where I cleaned out Holy Pan and still found Seraph and his angelic goons on D2 of the Orb Run.

I was tempted to explicitly call my naga win fast in real time because I don't generally play terribly fast and consider a win in less than 5 hours to be fast, but then I thought of you, Bloax, and decided not to :P

As for multiple seraphs, yes I think it's intended, but probably wasn't really thought about much. I'd prefer it being an actual unique so if you kill it in holy pan it doesn't reappear, but it isn't terribly broken to have it appear twice. I'd like for its summons to be abjuration-able, but otherwise it's generally not much harder than a random pan lord, as long as you aren't vuln to holy.

It should probably have a more interesting name than "seraph" if it's going to be unique.

Multiple seraphs appearing is a bug. Multiple seraphim are fine though.
