CIP: First succesfull spellcaster, DEFE^Veh

I finally cleared Lair with a spell casting character and now I'm a bit stumped. I feel like I am too weak to take on more than one enemy at once and it takes me a long time to even kill anything. I'm still mainly using Throw Flame and Sticky Flame for damage as I'm not sure what spells are good. Fireball and Iron Shot are pretty strong I suppose, but they're pretty expensive to cast and cause a fair bit of spell hunger. Basically I'm just a noob who has mainly been playing melee characters and finally managed to get a spellcaster out of the Lair alive, so I'd appreciate some advice accordingly.

You have a staff of energy. Use that instead of fire for now. [It removes all spell hunger and can be Evoked (Evocations Skill) for extra MP.]

Your Skills look like a bit of a mess I'd assume autotraining, AND your spells are also all over the place (I wouldn't have branched into anywhere near that many elements; it causes your skills in each of them to be too low to get the kind of damage you should get.)

Honestly, if you passed me that savefile, I'd probably end up switching to Ashenzari just to pair down those skill so they aren't all over the place. Really shoud be Conjurations/Fire way above everything else. Not Fire/Ice/Translocations so high. GEEZ. I'd say you screwed up the skilling so bad you're likely to die soon and there's not much I can do to help you now. (Might have earlier, but).

I mean you were playing a fire elementalist; not a Fire/Ice/Translocations, et. all Elementalist. This is kind of like...if instead of picking between axes and polearms, you trained both and switched randomly. Skills aren't focused enough to be powerful with any one of them.

His skills does not look that terrible man. :roll: Its not like that he screwed it and that he will die. Also think he did not use autotraining.

@Esc: Try to get Bolt of Fire/Magma if those are available, and use instead of Iron Shot. Fireball is good lvl 5 spell, don't hesitate to use it, as Vehu gives you mana on kills.
Tho bcadren panic a bit, his suggestion about staff of energy is ok. You can inscribe it with a, staff of fire inscribe with b and switch those with '.

Not inscribe, but assign to. Use "=iXY" to reassign item from "X" to "Y". For example, to assign the staff of fire to "a" press "=iCa"

Though I would inscribe staff of energy with "!a" to avoid accidental melee attacks (iEi!a<enter>)

Thanks for the replies. Why is Conj/Fire so important? For stronger Fireball? I didn't really like using Fireball because it makes so much noise. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I did not have access to Bolt of Fire/Magma but I managed to clear most of Snakes using Iron Shot. Unfortunately I got myself killed.

For the next run:
IMO conjure flame is the best spell in the FE starting book.
Does great damage that is independent of spellpower(only duration increases), most early enemies will not step in it so you can create roadblocks while you recuperate.
Later hydras/hill giants and the like will just run over flame clouds without a care, if you lay down 3-4 in a row it'll kill 10 death yaks just as easily as 1 of them for a fixed mp cost.
Paired with corridors/digging it's the best solution for missing firepower up until you finish lair branches, still somewhat useful a while after that.
On that note digging wands are extremely useful, I'd say always id at least one if you have them(in your linked game you only had an unknown one).

Yep, Focusing conj/fire is increasing power for your damage spells. The final goal is to get to the lvl9 ones with some survival/utility thrown
in when the xp cost gets low enough compared to the enemies you are facing. Without enough damage in the mid/lategame you'll get intimately familiar
with the abilities of dangerous enemies, that's a good thing for getting better but not very useful for your current char :)

Misc skills: I tend to pick them up around lair. Blaster mages usually get ~5-15 fighting/dodging, maybe armor until they get their first extra point if using something over leather,
a few points other schools just to get blinks/shadow creatures/ozo armor/deflect/haste and the like to appropiate failure rates. With sif throw in some invocations.
Ofc all the above are wildly situational based on aptitudes and pickups, only fighting and dodging are universal.

I wouldn't say you're screwed up at all - you've got a lot of spellcasting and a fair amount of conjurations which are useful all-round schools for a spell caster.

You've obviously got a little of most elemental schools, but this is not a big problem (as long as you focus on one or two schools from this point), and may even be useful at this stage as you have a variety of attack options.

Your defences are not too bad for your level, either.

Don't worry about spell hunger - two pips is nothing for level 6 spells - 1 chunk gives 1000 nutrition, which cancels the spell hunger from all but the highest level spells, and you can always swap to the staff of energy if you're running low on food or if you want to cast some nukes. As your int rises (which happens quickly for a DE), your hunger cost will go down as well.

Now's definitely the time to focus on one or two schools, though. I'd go for fire and conjurations, because Firestorm is the ultimate nuke (smite-targeted, Big AoE, irresistible), and on the way to getting it, you can use Fireball (an excellent spell because it has a stable, constant AoE and it *ignores EV*, bolt of fire (great range and damage), and bolt of magma / OOD for fire-resistant / immune enemies.

Later on, get some more TLoc (about 15 or so) for Controlled blink (both for escape and for positioning for firestorm / OOD.)

You might want to get about 15 necro as well for support later on - agony is one of the most useful spells in the game and regeneration is always useful. Push it up to 20 later on for DD and BR - useful endgame / extended spells. You may even want to get necromutation for torment immunity etc., but requires quite a bit of TM as well, so you'd need to plan for it carefully.

Don't worry too much about noise - you're never going to be subtle as a blaster caster, but do have enough stealth (quite stealthy+) to be able to pick your fights / sneak away to replenish your SP.

Staff of fire boosts the spell power (and thus damage) from fire spells, but lowers it for ice spells. So wielding staff of fire when casting fire spells is a lot more effective than wielding a staff of energy (or something else), though you should not wield the staff of fire when casting something like bolt of cold.

I would have trained more dodging and some fighting; aside from the crazy high elemental resists (which are nice, but aren't as important as your basic AC/EV and your MR), your defenses were not great—whereas your offensive options were already very, very strong and diverse.

Being mindful about how much noise you are generating is very good play and will serve you well.

More Fire/Conj skill does improve your spell power and damage, but it is subject to diminishing returns, so it rarely makes sense to hyper-train those skills when there are other, less experience-hungry options for skill training. Especially when you already have an enhancer (in your case staff of fire).

Newbie blaster mages often ignore the effectiveness of hitting stuff. Not having to spend MP on trivial popcorn or almost-dead enemies is a huge boost. Fighting is something everyone needs to train anyway, and low levels of weapon skills are very easy to attain. Generally with proper positioning, even as a DE you should aim to be able to melee the green rat packs and ordinary orc dudes as long as you can command a chokepoint.
