CIP: DECj of Veh

I've only ever won this game once, and it was wit ha DECj. It was a 3-rune win and I wanted to do it again to prove it wasn't luck... although given the early scroll of acquirement which gave me that staff (then 4 or 5 more scrolls of acquirement which gave me fairly rubbish randarts and shields which I obviously wasn't going to use with a staff. I've even got a couple of unused scrolls of acquirement in my inventory), and a few very useful Potions of Beneficial Mutation (+10% HP and rPois) I'm not sure I can chalk this one entirely up to my own skill.

Anyway, I've got three runes and I've cleared Zot:5. I was going to just grab it and run but given that I'm casting fire storm without any spell hunger, and I've got a great set of resistances and 180HP, I was thinking about maybe exploring the game a bit more.

That staff is one handed (right), no reason not to use a buckler with it. You should also train a bit of staves so you can tab weaker things a bit (pretty cheap).

You have probably trained spellcasting too much, you could have invested that elsewhere specially with 15 spare spell slots. Spell hunger is not that important (as long as it is not crippling), and Vehumet helps a lot with mana. And well, you are a DE.

I would also consider upgrading armour a bit to be less brittle. You already have enough MR. Dodging and fighting are also a priority. With 20 AC, 30 EV and 172 HP you will get destroyed the second something goes wrong - despite how unlikely it might seem.

That said, I would probably do Crypt first for some ez loot, then either Abyss or Slime, then the other. They should not be too hard, but Abyss specially requires a rather different mindset than most of the game.

I would also acquire some jewelry/armour and hope for further cool randarts.

And don't worry about your wins "being due to luck", most winning characters will have stumbled upon something neat at some point

Every spell you have that uses Fire also uses Conjurations, and you have the same aptitude for both. You don't have anything else that benefits from Fire skill, so you have no reason to ever train your Fire skill higher than your Conjurations skill.

I suppose if you were planning on finding a Staff of Fire and relying on it to do lots of damage it would make a difference, although I'm skeptical it would be worth training that much surplus in Fire.

That staff does elemental attacks based on my evocations which i've trained so I've been tabbing through a lot of things just relying on that. I've not trained staves because I've been having it fairly easy up til now but maybe that's a good idea. And I had no idea that it was one-handed so I'd have been using a buckler if I knew... I did ?SoA a randart buckler at some point but I dropped it because I thought I couldn't use it with a staff.

And to be honest I am still fairly clueless as to how a spell conjurations/fire will be affected by training those schools. Like is a conjurations level 10 fire magic level 0 going to be better than a level 5 in both conjurations and fire magic?

I've already done Slime, and the Abyss still scares me, so maybe I'll head to the crypt although I am considering just quitting whilst I'm ahead and just going for the ascension.

I've already done Slime, and the Abyss still scares me, so maybe I'll head to the crypt although I am considering just quitting whilst I'm ahead and just going for the ascension.


Abyss is not really too scary, specially if you are stealthy, have Haste AND friggin Firestorm. I sometimes get my third rune there if Vaults 5 seems too dangerous or I have a fast character that can outrun most stuff

And for mixed school spells all levels count the same, so for example level 20 in Fire and 0 in Conj is the same that 10 in both, but the latter is far cheaper

That said, you can still die there, don't blame me if you do!

The sum* of the spell schools is all that matters, so 10/0 and 5/5 do the same thing.

Every four points of spellcasting, incidentally, counts as one level in every spell school.

There used to be a few spell effects that depended on the level in specific skills, like the amount of AC you get from Stoneskin, but these spells said so in their descriptions. In recent versions of crawl (starting with 0.15?) these spells have been modified not to behave this way and use spellpower.

O Level 27 Spellcasting
- Level 16.0 Conjurations
+ Level 24.0 Fire Magic

Training spellcasting to 27 way before your attack schools is suboptimal. Hungerless casting is not a worthy goal because the spells kill stuff that you can eat so they essentially pay for themselves. Besides, there's plenty of permafood in the dungeon.

Instead of Spellcasting 27, Conjurations 16 and Fire Magic 24 you could have Spellcasting 20, Conjurations 23.4 and Fire magic 23.4 with the same amount of experience. You would still have enough spell levels for your current spells and your attack spells would be more effective.

I went from Zot:5 to the crypt but I was acquiring new mutations at a fairly alarming rate... not sure why that was happening... so I decided to just go grab the orb and go for the ascent. I came across a couple of Pan lords on the way up but I managed to just about escape from them. It's very unnerving to have to use down stairs to escape when you're supposed to be ascending!

I'll wait til the dump is in my morgue and i'll try to figure out why I was mutating.

I don't think I'd Hasted much. Certainly not enough to get beyond the first level of contamination.
