Heya, I would like some advice on my recent dead character, if possible. This was my first DDNe to make it past the early game. I'm not a super serious player (yet), so a lot of my choices were best guesses. I've really only gotten past Lair/Orc with MiBe's, so I'm completely new at playing spellcasters past the early portions, so any advice would be welcome on how to properly build a hybrid.

By this point in the game, I moved away from spell-casting (Pain/Drain Blood) and was mostly hitting with my axe, raising the corpses, and casting haste/shroud/repel missiles if a fight looked tough (Although I think I could have used them a little more). I had a couple battleaxes, but the vamp was really helping keep my life up. I regret not putting anything into invocations, it was one of those things that I kept meaning to do, and never got around to it.

One thing I want to point out is that I really did not want to go into the Shoals, because I read it was a hard branch compared to Spider, but I didn't have rPoison, so I took my chances. And, well, look how that turned out.

Anyway, comments/tips/critiques?

I'm not a great player, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but your character looked like it was in reasonable shape for that point in the game. I have to ask, though, why did you cast Pain? I'd think swinging your vamp axe at the snake might help get you some HP to partially counteract the rocks being thrown at your head.

Also, one useful tip I've learned: if you have the Haste spell, you almost always want to cast it as your first action in any encounter when Big Nasties show up. Sometimes to fight and other times you can just use it to run away and engage more favorably later.

That was me pressing wrong buttons, I didn't actually cast it, I cast repel missiles instead, as a last ditch effort to maybe repel the large rocks coming from Polyphemus.

And I will do that next time! I really don't think I used haste enough.

Ah, if pressing wrong buttons, then maybe a little bit of panic set in? That's one of the real killers in crawl, right after hubris and tiredness.

I see you were working on Necromancy up until you died. Necro is a very good school, but like some other magic merely being able to cast the spell at a low failure rate is sufficient, and having additional spellpower doesn't add considerable damage/utility. While vamp drain is pretty good, as the monsters start dealing more damage, vamp drain doesn't really keep up in damage, and I'd just use it on the weak crap to heal (and since the healing is consistent with the damage dealt, I believe, you'll heal the same amount regardless of your spellpower). Animate dead is extremely useful and versatile but it was already at 1% fail; at that point you can leave it alone since it doesn't get much better than 1%.

I see you worked on armour skill. More armour skill improves your ability to cast spells while wearing armor, and gives you a percentage increase to your AC depending on the base AC of your armor (which you can check for each armor piece you're wearing). Armor skill has a considerably more pronounced effect when you're wearing heavy armor like plate mail; if you're wearing the light stuff like leather or ring mail, you are better off training Dodging to get your EV up (which generally sees better gains faster, especially with light armor).

The times when you'd want to use animate skeleton instead of animate dead are rather rare. That and Pain are probably not worth their skill slots anymore; I'd forget them the moment I got a chance to.

Makhleb is really good with invocations. Especially since you were a character without any other ranged option. Conjurations of all stripes are immensely useful against most monsters, and Polyphemus is no exception. Demon buddies can give your horde a little more oomph.

Okay! I will say, I was training necro to because I was planning on learning some stuff from the book of Death, and there was a Necronomicon in a shop, that is really handy news for my next DDNe's that just want the basics. Any general ideas on what I should have had instead on pain/animate skeleton at that point?

I tend to throw out Animate skeleton and Pain pretty fast, replace with Animate Dead and Agony if its available. Clearing doorways isnt an issue, animate dead will do it without spraying chunks. Pain isnt worth casting the moment theres an alternative pretty much. The only thing the lesser Animate spell has going for it is leaving chunks for if you are hungry.

Character was looking pretty good. I would have stopped Necromancy once the lvl 5's run in your chosen armour (usually 12-15), this covers dispel and bolt of draining if thats your thing. Turning Necro back on is only worth it if you have pain brand or are ready to cast the high-end necro stuff (deaths door, bjorns rev, necromut)

Rather than learning charms and getting RMsl, I might have been tempted by Fighting and Dodging first (not saying RMsl was wrong, my similar character didnt have to face Shoals). Fighting is pretty key for a DD, you need a big pool of HP in order to react to correct things when it starts to drop. Dodging is even more key because EV is worth more than AC to your DD. This again because he cant heal, rather evade outright than damagesoak. Looking through your character this is about the only skill-training difference from my last DD, rest looks good.

Love the axe, vamp waraxe must have been a lot of fun.

Pain is fine for finishing targets weakened by Agony. It ignores AC and the damage is good.

i don't agree, id rather have control over how much i get hurt than to rely on dice. ac is much more predictable.

Anyway, your defences were quite bad (shit, for my taste). You should have raised a bit dex instead of int so much - you hadn't many spell for which spellpower was important so you why raise it so much? Plus, dodging or armor was too low. And you had ozocubu armor at good spellpower, a robe/leather + it would have been much better than a +3 ring mail.
