As you can see, I have cleared the basic game plus slime pits. My problem is that the RNG has been a bit strange. I am missing the following:
1. rMut
2. Haste spell (though I have wand of hasting, that is mostly good enough)
3. Silence
4. Abjuration

Without rMut, I feel it is too dangerous to go into Zot:5, Abyss or Pan. Without silence and abjuration, it seems dangerous to go into Tomb. That leaves only Hell branches, though without abjuration it seems quite dangerous to do those too. So...I am stuck. Suggestions on what to do next?

Also, some comments on the skill training/gear etc. are welcome. On this char, apart from the first 2 or 3 level ups, I put all my stat increases into Str, since UC gets good boost from it. For Blade hands, str and dex are roughly equivalent I think, but for statue form and dragon form, str matters more. Was it a good idea?

If you've not found any of 1-4 AND those are the quality of your RandArts, you really do seem to cursed by the RNG. Did Vaults/Elf have nothing much of use? Nothing in your stash you can use? And what of the shops? Hells can be a problem without god backup and without a stack of the correct resists. And Tomb with shoutitus sounds intrinsically like a bad idea.

Since you won't be fooling anyone with Stealth 5; ninja'ing the orb is also not an option. That said, I'm not sure that you NEED rMut for Zot if you're VERY careful. Pull Orbs of Fire one at a time and pull no punches in killing them with extreme predjudice (Dragon Form; given you have it). You will probably come out with several mutations of course, but thats irrelevant if you can make it to the surface. Still, it is indeed a dangerous roulette.

Of course, since I only cleared Zot once before, and that was with a 27 stealth vampire of Ash, you might want to take my advice with a pinch of salt! :P

To clarify a bit, I have no issues with resistances to fire, cold, neg, pois, MR etc. I have rings/armour to handle all those. The shout mutation is also not a problem: I have a couple cure mut pots. I just haven't bothered to cure it yet. I am pretty sure I can do Zot:5 and win: dragon form kills OoF's in a couple of rounds. But I am planning to do extended and don't want to be mutated to hell before I do hell.

Ah fair enough. Does abjuration even work in hell? Since they're not summoned demons, they're just the 'locals', so to speak. Can't say I've tried, my only trip to hell was with TSO's help on a Fighter. A Zig is likely your best bet in that case I think (EDIT: Ninja'ed by sandman).

STR is a good bet for Transmutations, by and the by. Its rare to see an argument for it over DEX, but that is one of the times (the other one is x-bows I believe). I'm not if its intrinsically better than having a slaying bonus, though.

If you're really afraid of OOF mutations, don't do zot:5 before you're ready to pick up the orb. Seems simple enough to me. Also rMut isn't really useful in Zot, at all, and silence and abjuration are unlikely to be especially useful anywhere for this character (but I personally just don't get the fixation with silence in tomb in general).

This character's items don't look bad to me at all? All its armour is good, it has hasting, amulet of the air (WHY AREN'T YOU WEARING AMULET OF THE AIR), and so on. Yes it only has one good ring but that's not uncommon. Book of wizardry was removed in 0.16 so haste spell is rare now (it's only in Enchantments, which is the same rarity as Party Tricks sans dumb vaults).

a) For the stuff I am training: UC, Fighting and Dodging are already at very high levels, so while focusing those, I just expanded into a few more skills. Not sure what else to train. Spellcasting is to reduce hunger, transmutations to increase spell power for hydra form, and Air in case I get a book with Silence.

b) You are correct about Zot:5, your simple solution (not going there until I am ready to pick up the Orb) is exactly what I am doing now. My question is which branch I should tackle next. Pan/Abyss are both quite mutagenic. For Tomb, I like silence to stop mummies from casting too much, and abjuration in case something nasty is summoned. You reckon it would be fine even without it?

c) As to why I'm not wearing the amulet of the air, I do generally wear it. This particular screenshot with amulet of gourmand is somewhat of a special case. Ignore that part.

d) As to Str training: my thought process was this: http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Weapon_damage It says that every extra point of stat gives a 2.5% bonus to damage. And it says "Stat" is a number between Str and (STR + Dex) / 2. Which means that Str would generally give a higher return than dex. I could have put the stat into Str or Dex. Dex would have improved evasion as well, and str would make a greater difference to damage. I could also have put the stat into int, which would have increased transmutation spell power. However, transmutation spell power usually just makes the transmutation lasts longer (except for hydra form), which was not too important to me.

How far deep would you suggest I go? Last time, I died on Zig: 14, when a shadow demon summoned a shadow demon...and they proceeded to fill up the screen. Also a bunch of starcursed masses were shrieking and paralyzing me...

With melee characters (like yours) I don't go deeper than 10. If I have any problems earlier, I leave Zig immediately as well.

Ok, I did (half of) Tomb:1 and up to Zig:12, then was forced to escape, still basically the same situation.

I did get 2 acquirement scrolls though. But I still have about 5-6 jewellery unidentified, so the odds of getting rMut are not too great. Wasn't too impressed with jewellery acquirements in the past.

Your "core" skills are in good shape, yes, but as you say later (with regard to int), you don't need much more spell power for transmutations. Spell hunger is not a high priority for this character either (it very rarely is, for any character). And you should not train skills for spells/items/whatever that you do not yet have.

In terms of what you could train instead, you only have 7.5 evocations and yet you are carting around a number of attack wands and powerful evocable items. That's probably where I'd put my experience right now.

Tomb can be rough, and personally I do like silence (not just in tomb tho). Remember that summons disappear as soon as the summoner is destroyed; take it slow, stair-dance a lot, only allow one summoner in your LOS at a time. You have a haste wand and 12 scrolls of recharging, though, and plenty of other good escape tools. You should be fine. (I take it you know about the sphinx welcoming committee, yeah?)

d) As to Str training


I would have gone with more dex, mostly, with maybe a couple more stat-ups in intelligence. You have a lot invested in dodging, and higher dex would give you better returns on it for EV. (It isn't something to worry about now, and your character is still very strong overall.)

Ok, Tomb was indeed not too problematic with statue form. (By the way, the entrance to Tomb:3 now is even more ridiculously crowded than before, now that there are anubis guards, scarabs and bennus in addition to the mummies). Stair dancing there seemed endless, but finally it ended.

Strangely enough, I still don't have either rMut or Abjuration! I also burned my two scrolls of acquirement, which gave me useless randarts. I did get a book with silence, though it is kind of wasted now that only demonic areas are left, which are silence immune.

I think I will just go into Hell branches now. Except for Dis, I think cacodemons and neqoxecs are not too common elsewhere. Hopefully in one of the loot piles I will find rMut. I might try Cocytus first, since Antaeus cannot summon stuff, so abjuration might not be missed.

I've long wanted to try silencing tomb, but I don't believe I've ever done it, as I typically stay away from hexes as a personal preference (independent of their power level, which is high). I do typically use statue form, which imho is more than enough power to clear tomb pretty easily, although you have to be careful about having too many monsters in LOS at once since you're slow and they can swarm you more easily.

As to actual advice: here's how I see the "take strength for form damage" idea. Imagine a typical character with 2 runes, found and enchanted some endgame weapon (not unarmed), has min delay, decent fighting skill, etc. I'd say their max damage is roughly going to be around 40-50, ie they roll 1d50 each attack. If they had max damage of 60 they'd notice the improvement and it would be easier for them to win, but 50 is plenty for a decent player to kill things comfortably. An unarmed expert probably clocks in at right around 50 max damage as well, but if you use transmutations like blade hands/statue form/hydra form, you're now rolling something more like 1d80. So talking about increasing 1d80 to 1d90, which is possible if you take 4-5 str level ups, is kind of overkill. This is also the same reason I don't really like dragon form, which comes with something like 1d100 out of the box, but it's mostly all overkill.

So picking strength is adding more to your already too high damage - taking dexterity adds more to your decent-but-not-overkill EV. Int adds more to your decent-but-not-great spellcasting.

If you want to see some specific numbers, here's some old fsim runs I did way back when but should still be generally accurate:

And to be silly, take 27 unarmed/fighting and now add Chei stats to it:

So the second one can show how powerful adding 15str AND dex is, but it doesn't tell you which of the two is more important. It's str, of course, but dex gives you better defenses and remember all of this is already overkill territory. Since you're a Demigod, you obviously can't pick chei, your natural stats put you about halfway between the first and second fsims. Seems like the ballpark numbers of blade hands doing 1d80 should have been more like 1d100 already. I didn't test dragon form in the above, it's probably more like 1d130 or something :P

Thanks for the numbers. I have never used fsim, so it was interesting to see them.

To your point about str vs dex. Recall that in trunk, Dg get 2 stats every third level. Finally, it was +4 to int, +2 to dex and +12 to str in my case. So the damage number should be much closer to the second case.

As to whether it is overkill, that is not easy to say. I was really playing demigod to try a "Chei-style" character with haste. I just did all four hell branches, and the end game bosses took significant punishment, (5-8 rounds with blade hands). Even Hell sentinels were quite tough, and fiends often took 2-3 hits in statue form. With fiends, it does not really matter how much EV one has, since most of the damage is torment.

Regarding dex: Currently I have 34 EV with 27 dodging (at base dex). I wore a +6 dex ring for most of the early game and later I got amulet of the air, so my EV was pretty good anyway. My thought process was to increase my offence to kill the dangerous monsters before they did too much damage.

(In other news, I STILL have not got abjuration or rMut. I did get haste spell, but with the wand already, it is not too important. The RNG works in mysterious ways... I racked up quite a few mutations in hell due to contamination and cacodemons in Dis. I ran out of cure mutation potions at the same point I ran out of Hell branches :P. I suppose there is nothing else to do except to go into Pan now.)

The relevant number from fsim is (player aveffdam)/(monster aveffdam). This still undervalues defenses by a bit but it's as close as you can get from fsim.

Using the above numbers, one can do a rough thought experiment:

a) Picking Str over Dex: use the AvEffDam for player (offence) from "Chei" stats and for monster (defence) from "normal" stats. Statue form: 101/5.1 = 19.8. Blade Hands: 123/8.6 = 14.3

b) Picking Dex over Str: use AvEffDam for player (offence) from "normal" stats and for monster (defence) from "chei" stats. Statue form: 47.8 / 2.6 = 18. Blade Hands: 55.0 / 4.3 = 12.

Of course, this simplifies, devaluing defence somewhat, also devaluing offence in case of unavoidable (read torment and hellfire) attacks, but this is what we can get from the data.

The big thing is that str is pretty much linear whereas dex is absolutely not. I did some tests on what I would consider realistic characters a while ago and found that in non-chei circumstances dex is generally better (similar in the fsim result, but also gives much better not-accounted-for-in-fsim benefits) even for statue and dragon form. Dg probably has high enough stats to make this different.

None of this really matters though, since you could literally just rng every stat increase as dgtm and be just fine.
