After many attempts at forcing a DgEE to behave like a Trogite without the Trog, I *finally* caved in and invested in actual magical skills. Finding two manuals of ice magic in Lair may have had something to do with this sudden reversal. Possibly. However, you may notice that I have, in fact, not been casting anything. A demon whip of electrocution with sufficient skill to reach minimum delay rolls over Orc, Lair, and most of the main dungeon like a truck. Now that I am in the rune-gathering phase of the game, however, it would be very nice to have at least some supportive magic.

I have two problems to solve before moving on, and would appreciate advice on both. For one, which of the many skills that I want to have should I be working on at present? Secondly, should I give this trove 4 scrolls of blinking? The answer to the latter inquiry is most likely no, but curiosity tempts me to make the trade.

Alternatively, I could forget about casting for now and just wear the armour of the Dragon King. I need quite a bit more strength to overcome the penalties, though, if I'm not mistaken.

I actually wish I'd gotten this advice sooner. My lack of EV is, in fact, very painful at this point in the game. I'd probably be dead without a lot of luck. I've gotten one more level in dodging since the last dump, but otherwise have been working on other things.

Lee's Rapid Deconstruction is *far* more damaging than I expected it to be. It's been a lifesaver more times than I can count, now. I've still not figured out the wall destroying mechanic entirely; it seems to rely at least partly on chance even at this high spellpower and on standard rock. In any case, the ability to cause a great chunk of damage to any mob of enemies that happens to be within several spaces of a wall has been crucial to my survival. Not that the whip has become weak, mind you. It just doesn't seem to destroy everything like it did in the midgame.

So, time to focus heavily on dodging I suppose. What do you think about trying to make Shatter usable? I don't regret the investment in earth magic either way for the aforementioned powered up LRD. However, I'm not even sure if I'll be XL 27 by the end of the game at this point.

I don't think you're going to get shatter online if you aren't going to do extended. At least not without losing wild magic. You might be able to get LCS online in a reasonable fashion, but even if you take earth magic to 27, shatter won't be castable without several more points of int and about +15 spellcasting skill. You'd probably have to use wizardry, really. In contrast, you could get LCS online with about 1-2 levels of earth, 5-7 levels of conjuration and spellcasting (which are both low and should be cheap).

All of that training is just option one, however. Your other option is go hard into armor/dodging/fighting, and I'd say you'll probably see better returns here. You might be able to balance both, especially if you do decide to take on running slime or crypt, for example. But I'd forget about shatter unless you do something extreme like clearing pan or hell.

Thanks to the very helpful advice of ye who took the time to give it, my EV shot up to 25 by the end and I actually was strong enough to run through Zot:5 with the Shield of the Gong on. Despite my very best efforts, I never did get Shatter to below 20% failure rate, so it remained untouched and I suppose that I severely overtrained earth magic for what I ended up doing with it in the end (which was still fantastic. LRD is certainly something that I will consider on future characters). You play and learn. This is my first elementalist win, so I had no idea exactly *how* much investment was actually needed for level 9 spells. Apparently it's quite astronomical. The experience put into in ice magic was also a complete waste. Don't train what you aren't planning to use, people.

I don't recall exactly how much int you want, but for level 9 spells you generally need the spell school at 27, very high spellcasting (usually around 20, 27 wouldn't hurt) and a good int score (mid 30's or higher) to get a level 9 spell online. It may still have 2-3% failure and yellow miscasts. About the only race I ever recommend doing this on is deep elves, because with positive spell schools for just about anything and +3 spellcasting, it'll get there sooner or later. Also all their level ups go into int, so you can get enough int to make it possible.

Sometimes I'm still surprised by how hard it can be, though: my recent High Elf for example. HE's get high int and are good casters, right? I had 18 spellcasting, 27 translocations, 33 int, fire dragon armor with 18 armor skill, and it still took two wizardry rings to get singularity to 2% fail. Granted the armor's hurting, but double wizardry is a huge boost and it's still not 1%. If I was going for extended, about another 5 levels of spellcasting probably would have gotten it to 1%, but I don't think I could have removed the wizardry rings and still had 1% fail. Fortunately in this case they were good randart wiz rings, so wearing them wasn't a problem :)

In fact the main reason I ran slime on that character was because I needed the experience after spending so much getting singularity online.
