Hi,
I'm not the best crawl player out there, my playstyle is too risky for a game like this, but I still like it.

I have only won with fighters and berserkers so far, I have very few experience with mages and this one is my most advanced until now:

Air is generally the same as fire, you spend mana to deal damage to monsters, so getting both isn't that helpful. If you lacked higher powered fire spells then switching to a school you had higher power spells in would make sense, but you have fireball/bolt of fire/delayed fireball, which should be a "complete" set of fire spells to handle any non-fire resistant threat. I personally wouldn't switch to air just because you have a staff for it, you may find a staff of fire soon, or you can always just complete the game without one.

I'd train staves a bit, you don't have to go entirely to min delay, but even just 10 skill will make your quarterstaff a pretty solid backup attack. It's a very good quarterstaff, even though quarterstaves themselves are only "sort of good" weapon types. Eventually you might want to replace it with a better weapon type, but it's solid for now and worth a little melee skill.

You should absolutely train more dodging. You're wearing a robe and still have 2.1 dodging, which is just leaving free EV on the table. True you only have 10 dex, but even low dex characters in robes will see good returns on dodging.

So in short, I'd train these skills: Dodging until ~ 10, staves until ~ 10. Then, evaluate spells you've found, and train for them. Assuming you don't find anything extremely different from what you already have, that will mostly mean more conjurations/fire, until you get higher spellpower on fireball/bolt of fire. You want to remove your ring of wizardry at some point and free that up for a better ring. Because of the ring and Vehumet, you look like you can cast level 6 spells, but the actual power of them is very, very low. In fact I'm getting a bit conflicted on if you should train a bit more fire/conj first, and then do dodging/staves. But either way, turn off fighting, 16 is plenty for now.

Thank you for the advice, found finally some time to continue playing. Update, still alive, but I had lots of problems in Snake - salamanders and especially their upgrades (don't remember the name)...

Things became easier afterwards, but I haven't found something like iron shot, so I'm currently restricted to fire spells. I'm tanking and stairdancing with Sticky Flame for most of the time and this works pretty well. But I'm really scared about orbs of fire... :? That was why I asked about air, to have something against fire-resistant stuff (I could learn airstrike...). I only have Bolt of Magma by now...

Fire Storm is currently at 9% and my next goal.

for orbs of fire your best bet would be either iron shot, orb of destruction or crystal spear. If you get a somewhat decent weapon (demon weapon, lajatang) you can quaff might, buff yourself with haste (potion or wand is fine), drink resistance if you are under rF++ and just whack them. good news is that its rather rare to see more than 4 of them in whole zot, but you can get unlucky like me and get that fire lake vault with 5 or so orbs next to each other and then another 3 in zot:5 entering your los all at the same time.).

I notice that you haven't used Delayed Fireball much. It's pretty awesome, so I highly recommend keeping it up and available. The key thing is that releasing the fireball is instantaneous (doesn't cost you any cast time in combat), which means you can quickly get some extra damage in a dangerous situation for things that you want to die as quickly as possible. It's basically free instant damage in every major fight for the advance cost of some extra rest time.

Yeah, if you've got the spell memorized you should always have a delayed fireball ready. Just cast it when you're not in combat, and then you've got a free instant fireball available on demand.

For orbs of fire, has orb of destruction generate in your game? You have good conjurations skill, so you'd be able to use it to good effect. That's my go-to spell for tough enemies who my primary attack element doesn't work against.

Yes, I know about the benefits of delayed fireball... I just forget about that spell all the time. It's still my first post-lair caster and I still have a few problems with the mass of spells, thx for the reminder.

I don't have orb of destruction, neither iron shot. I do have LCS, but never trained earth magic and am already lvl26... guess that's too late. I just browsed the forums and found that a few people stated, that fire storm works on orbs of fire as well. I guess I'll try it...

Firestorm does work on orbs of fire, but at a reduced level of damage. Maybe it'll be fine for your character, I know it wasn't good enough on a DEFE of mine, but that was a generally poorly built character, relying completely on offense. Also, keep in mind, firestorm is insanely loud.

I would actually train earth and go for LCS. Gargs have an excellent aptitude for earth, and your primary method for killing fire resistant enemies right now is bolt of magma anyway, so you'll be boosting it too as you go. There's no need to rush to Zot:5 right away... exploring Crypts, Abyss, and so on will give you plenty of XP to get LCS online since you've already got strong Conj and Spc.

Firestorm does work on orbs of fire, but it's not the best choice if you have other options. It'll take 2-3 casts, which could mean 27 mana, which is a lot. If another one wanders in, you're going to run into mana problems pretty fast. And since it's so very, very loud, there's a very good chance that something will wander in. If you have good mana restoring methods (crystal ball, staff of energy) then you can certainly make it work, but LCS is better. With 20 conjurations and +2 earth, you can train earth up to 10-15 or so pretty fast, which should be enough.

At some point, getting a bit more dodging would also be a good idea. It could wait until after LCS if you go for that.

My point was he needs to train nothing to cast OOD, which kills OOFs just fine. (That's obviously why they both start with the same two letters :lol: )
While LCS would work too, he needs to train a lot of earth to get that going.

Of course that's all moot if OOD isn't available.

Yeah, but he doesn't have much earth magic skill. He does have tons of conjurations. Why fire a mediocre iron shot when you could fire a powerful orb of destruction instead?

I've heard the arguments pro LCS and will try to get it online.

I'll stick to the robe, though. I like to have permanent SInv (although I know it's absolutely unneccessary), don't want to train armour right now and am in tough fights with Ozocubus Armour near to 50 AC which is fine for me.

But currently I'm having a short playing pause after a little "accident" in crypt:3 :oops:
