So how do you think this is going? Anything I should train/stop training? And I think I'm going to finish clearing Orc, but where shall I go then? Ideally I'd go to Snake but that's not an option.

Don't ignore Fighting.

Edit: you have scrolls of enchant armour, your gloves/boots/helmet are good targets. Also, that sword is pretty good.

Edit #2: your magic offence looks really good overall, your defences are not, I would focus on them and maybe melee skills.

You look about as good as I did at XL 15 (I started a thread here about my char today too). I second the "don't ignore fighting" -- higher fighting gives you more HP, and I've had a few sub-10 HP "close calls" that would have been YASD had I not trained fighting. The pain is, DE has bad aptitude for it, so it is slow going. Similar for dodging, but DE has good aptitude there.

Mephitic Cloud -- useful, but gets less useful as monsters level up.
Repel Missiles can be useful in Shoals -- lots of things throw things at you there.

I have no experience with mele on a DECj; it is one of my open questions.

OK I've started training fighting now, and it's making slow progress although my HP is creeping up. I've already been training dodging as that's my main form of defence.

So I've cleared all 15 levels of the main dungeon, all of the Lair, and all of Orc and now I'm not sure where to go. Maybe just do the first level of Elf? Maybe the second, too? Or avoid elf entirely and go to the shoals? Slime pits seem like a bad idea, and I won't last long in the spider's nest if I get poisoned.

I wouldn't do Elf without more MR. Even if you're comfortable with being Banished, it's still annoying to wander the Abyss. Shoals is probably the best option if you don't have any rPois anywhere, though it helps to have a way to Fly if needed to avoid getting caught in a bad position. You can also easily wind up pincushioned with javelins, given your low defenses, so be very careful.

My condolences. :-) Glass cannon mages make light work of everything until they don't. There is some chance that if you'd gotten fighting a little higher you'd have survived, but your self-diagnosed tactical error (hubris :D ) is the major thing. So far my DECj is still going and making his way through the vaults, but all my close calls so far are due to hubris.

IMO, hubris is secondary; the primary cause is exhaustion. It's tedious to treat every fight as a life-or-death encounter; hubris gives us a way to rationalize not doing so.

I'm trying again and this time I've trained fighting and dodging from the start so hopefully I'll be more well rounded this time.

Ignite poison is great for when there are a few poison enemies nearby... I sort of wish the spider's nest was in this game but nevermind.

Should I train evocations so I can get more use out of wands etc?

And should I just ditch the swamp dragon armour? I thought if I held onto it then I might train some armour later and get some use out of it... but given that I have a ring of poison resistance, am I going to get any extra benefit from it?

It's either Spider or Snake and snake does have plenty of susceptible enemies (not all of them, though).

Given you have all the firepower you'll need to get the Lair runes I'd train Evocations soon to at least 10. This increases your chance of success of channeling with your staff of energy. Eventually I'd raise it even higher to get more mileage out of the elemental evocables you'll probably find, especially the lamps of fire and phials of floods. Later in the game high Evoc and a crystal ball of energy is the fastest way to regain mana in a hurry. For a spellcaster the wands are of secondary priority, IMHO.

I'd stash it for now. Wearing it will lower your EV and raise the fail% of your spells unless you train Armour for quite a bit. IMO, one usually shouldn't sacrifice EV for AC with a pure spellcaster who tries to kill everything from a distance. Training some Armour is useful even with that leather armour as you'll get a couple of points of extra AC with a modest investment (Armour ~7 IIRC). That Dex+3 also helps a bit with your EV and Slay+5 is very nice if you ever need to poke some dudes in melee.

My DE casters try to kill most of the things with spells. With Dj's I always have battlesphere with me (or at least I always cast it once I spot a monster) and just zapping things with magic dart is usually enough to kill most of the dudes from distance. Combined with Vehumet's MP-for-kills makes it probably the most mana efficient way of killing dudes in the game, apart from well placed AOE spells like Fireball or bolts that kill several dudes in a single turn.

Having some sort of killstick is still useful for backup and slaying helps a lot. I usually carry an ego dagger or short sword for that. Finding a useful one is all but guaranteed in Orc. Later on I'll switch to a staff of {earth,fire,cold} based on my highest spell school when I find one.

So I wielded a glowing war axe, which turned out to be Distortion brand... I decided to drop it because although I knew there would be a chance I'd be cast into the abyss, I thought that it was only a small chance. Anyway, I'm now in the abyss and i'm in a pretty bad way... I've got a spatial maelstrom and a wretched star right up close to me, and I've got two spatial vortices close by, and I've got no idea how to get out of here. I've not actually taken much damage but the star is pretty much mutating me every turn. Any advice?

Abyss basically requires you to treat the game differently, avoiding confrontation and covering territory should be your maximum priority. Exits spawn randomly (which is why it is important to cover territory) or in random vaults

If you encounter something you can't escape (faster than you) and that you would have trouble killing its time to teleport.

In this situation I would do exactly that, either teleport if you feel endangered or try to walk away and hope the shifting nature of the abyss works in your favour. You should consider using haste too. Maybe try to kill easy enemies as you encounter them as it will eventually remove those temporal mutations, but don't take too long or make too much noise

Its a shame you have not trained stealth a bit more, but anyway, I have survived the Abyss as a lvl 10 so you should be able too as well.

That sling is also not a bad thing to wield as a caster, uncontrolled teleports are fine in the abyss and rElec comes handy against raijus

Identify your stuff.

That +3 dex ring isn't really as helpful as some other stuff you have, for example your ring of magical power.

Abyss 1 is quite survivable as a level 15 caster. Just keep moving and breaking line of sight with things that pursue you, don't get surrounded or grabbed (tentacled, etc). You have 11 scrolls of teleportation, use them if needed.

The abyss makes teleportation take a long time, so if you do need a teleportation scroll, read it extra-early, then keep running until it goes off.

I died. I got grabbed by a big tentacle thing and there was just no escaping that. If I'd read a teleport scroll as soon as I saw the wretched star, or even earlier when I saw the spatial maelstrom then I might have lasted a bit longer, maybe even long enough to find an exit, but sadly I didn't recognise how dangerous the situation was until it was too late. Oh well, I know for next time.

I've started a new game on webtiles now and it's a CECj level 14.

Unfortunately the problem with the Abyss is often "I didn't realize how dangerous the situation was until it was too late" between large numbers of monsters generating constantly, shifting walls, and delayed or inconvenient escape items, a situation can turn pear shaped well before you can actually see all of the problems reflected in the monsters surrounding you and your dropping health bar.

You almost have to be a little prescient (or just plain lucky) to escape from the Abyss at lower levels, because you can see a monster by itself that you know you can kill, but engaging it in combat can well be the decision that leads to your death.
