After taking a break I found myself unable to continue with my previous character who is carrying 2 runes. This always seems to happen when I stop playing for a week or so. With the harder parts of the game remaining I find it more relaxing to roll up another one and just start punching keys.
After reading the forum a bit, I was inspired to try something I really haven't so far: a (mostly) melee build, and with a combination I haven't tried yet. My first attempts were some Ops and HEs from Skald and Warper backgrounds. I had a hard time getting them rolling and found myself running away trying to pick my battles. Then I thought that an enchanter background would help in picking the battles in the early game and the disabling hexes help with a bunch of monsters that are hard to kill early on.
So I rolled this one: VSEn, with a plan of sticking to stabbing throughout the early game and switch to a melee build and long blades sometimes during Lair. I also picked Makhleb for the first time because of his HP-for-kills ability. Verdict: wow.
The early game went as expected. I stabbed a lot and used a sling to soften things up.
After finding a +3 scimitar of freezing I started to move towards meleeing, while using the dagger for stabs whenever possible. At some point in Lair I realized that with a combination of Makhleb's HP-for-kills ability and Vine Stalker's antimagic bite I was just tabbing through everything (really Ctrl-I'ing which I find more ergonomic), including elephants and death yaks--if I was able to do so in a corridor or a killhole. Only once or twice did I have to back off from a fight when I was running a risk of getting surrounded by some hard hitting dudes.
After clearing the Lair I cleared rest of the main dungeon and got lucky with a vault in D:11 where I found the following:
Having cleared the main dungeon I Ctrl-F'd for armour and noticed an artefact dragon armour within my budget and it turned out to be ok:
So now I'll train some Tloc and Armour, head to Orc and wonder when the RNGods change their minds and find a way to screw this VS over.
