First Win! DDFi Makhleb Cleave
Hello fellow crawlers!
I finally managed to get my win! The farthest I ever got before this run was two runes, so I'm still a noob as you can clearly tell.
I can't even remember when I started playing and how many brave souls had lost their lives in the dungeon already.
Anyway, I always had a thing for axe-swinging, bone-grinding, iron-clad dwarven warriors. Maybe it's the beard. Or hobbit movie 3. Or both.
So I went for an extremly simple build with wihch I already had some experience: DDFi of Makhleb (I played offline btw).
Some notes/highlights/things I learned:
-In the past, I often ditched my shield ASAP, this time I decided to keep it (and upgrade to a large shield). I wouldn't have survived shoals without it.
-Despite an incredibly lucky find on D:4 (A regular crystal plate armour), the beginning was rather rough. Had to burn my wand of healing quite a bit until Makhleb support kicked in and my weapon skill got decent.
-Lesser Servants carried me through some tough fights in early liar, until I finally found a decent weapon and my fighting skills started shaping up. Hydras were surprisingly easy to kill with a few good attack wands.
-I couldn't find poison resistance for the live of me, but I had evokable flight, so I tackled shoals first. Summoned one or two Greater Servants before every tough fight.
-Nikolai almost oneshot me, that guy deals ludicrous amounts of damage, had to burn quite a few consumables to make win that fight.
-Illsuiw and her warband was a hard one. Luckily, I could reposition myself to dry land with teleport and split the enemy up. The Green Death I summoned for that fight put in some hard work, too. HERO GREEN DEATH.
-After that adventure, I easily breezed through Orcish Mines for some extra cash and XP and in hopes of finally finding poison resistance (spoiler: I didn't find it).
-Snake Pit was pretty easy at that point, despite the lack of rpoison. Only a few of the spellcasters got some lucky shots in.
-Going into Vaults, I was so powerful that I could alt-tab my way through pretty much everything, even titans! I could take on dozens of enemies! It was glorious. You should have been there. It was like a whirlwind of steel.
-Big shoutout to the player Mibe who showed me how to deal with Vault 5. I just teleported to the edge of the map and lured everything into a corridor; it was like a meat grinder.
-Dephts was pretty easy, too. Took a detour to abyss, mostly to avenge all my promising characters that died an untimely death there. You being the otherworldy terror that everybody was afraid of was a nice change of pace.
-I tried Slime Pits earlier but quickly saw that it was impossible without rcor. But when I retrurned after I got the Abyssal Rune, I was so powerful that it didn't matter too much. Still, I couldn't take many shots from Acid Blobs. Those things are lethal.
But thanks to some resting (incredible with a DD, I know) and using the stairs, I could get rid of them easily.
-I killed Geryon, but decided that I should just try to win instead of losing my best char trying to get to areas I was not prepared for.
-Aside from an Ancient Lich, Zot was rather tame. I luckily had rmut and rf+++ so even the Orbs of Fire didn't prove too much of a difficulty.
-Finally, the Arkenstone! I mean, Orb of Zot!
-A Pandemonium Lord blocked the way to the next staircase, but I defeated it!
-Next thing I knew, I made it outside the Dungeon!
Crawl is one of the best games I have ever played: Challenging, complex, atmospheric, fun and single-palyer (trust me, this is VERY important after the martyrdom I've been through in mobas...).
Getting my hands on the orb for the first time got me incredibly hype. Time to celebrate! Booze and men/women for everyone!

Some notes/highlights/things I learned:
-In the past, I often ditched my shield ASAP, this time I decided to keep it (and upgrade to a large shield). I wouldn't have survived shoals without it.
-Despite an incredibly lucky find on D:4 (A regular crystal plate armour), the beginning was rather rough. Had to burn my wand of healing quite a bit until Makhleb support kicked in and my weapon skill got decent.
-Lesser Servants carried me through some tough fights in early liar, until I finally found a decent weapon and my fighting skills started shaping up. Hydras were surprisingly easy to kill with a few good attack wands.
-I couldn't find poison resistance for the live of me, but I had evokable flight, so I tackled shoals first. Summoned one or two Greater Servants before every tough fight.
-Nikolai almost oneshot me, that guy deals ludicrous amounts of damage, had to burn quite a few consumables to make win that fight.
-Illsuiw and her warband was a hard one. Luckily, I could reposition myself to dry land with teleport and split the enemy up. The Green Death I summoned for that fight put in some hard work, too. HERO GREEN DEATH.
-After that adventure, I easily breezed through Orcish Mines for some extra cash and XP and in hopes of finally finding poison resistance (spoiler: I didn't find it).
-Snake Pit was pretty easy at that point, despite the lack of rpoison. Only a few of the spellcasters got some lucky shots in.
-Going into Vaults, I was so powerful that I could alt-tab my way through pretty much everything, even titans! I could take on dozens of enemies! It was glorious. You should have been there. It was like a whirlwind of steel.
-Big shoutout to the player Mibe who showed me how to deal with Vault 5. I just teleported to the edge of the map and lured everything into a corridor; it was like a meat grinder.
-Dephts was pretty easy, too. Took a detour to abyss, mostly to avenge all my promising characters that died an untimely death there. You being the otherworldy terror that everybody was afraid of was a nice change of pace.
-I tried Slime Pits earlier but quickly saw that it was impossible without rcor. But when I retrurned after I got the Abyssal Rune, I was so powerful that it didn't matter too much. Still, I couldn't take many shots from Acid Blobs. Those things are lethal.
But thanks to some resting (incredible with a DD, I know) and using the stairs, I could get rid of them easily.
-I killed Geryon, but decided that I should just try to win instead of losing my best char trying to get to areas I was not prepared for.
-Aside from an Ancient Lich, Zot was rather tame. I luckily had rmut and rf+++ so even the Orbs of Fire didn't prove too much of a difficulty.
-Finally, the Arkenstone! I mean, Orb of Zot!
-A Pandemonium Lord blocked the way to the next staircase, but I defeated it!
-Next thing I knew, I made it outside the Dungeon!
Crawl is one of the best games I have ever played: Challenging, complex, atmospheric, fun and single-palyer (trust me, this is VERY important after the martyrdom I've been through in mobas...).
Getting my hands on the orb for the first time got me incredibly hype. Time to celebrate! Booze and men/women for everyone!
