First Win, GrFi of Zin

Just looking to celebrate my first win after probably 200 losses between WebTiles and my downloaded version. Any thoughts or input on this would be great; I probably had the capability to go for more than 3 runes, but at this point I just wanted to get a victory under my belt. The only oddball thing to happen in this game was accidentally rebranding my freezing giant mace to fire - I accidentally pressed the wrong key. This was irritating at the time because I hadn't found any other worthwhile weapons and was trying to brand an unbranded great mace into a good replacement. I guess another interesting point is that I've had such bad luck in the past with Vaults:5 that I normally just go for the Abyssal Rune - I didn't do that this time; fortunately, it worked out. Zin is incredible; he seems to be a good fit for me with the kind of mistakes I most often make.

First of all, congratulations.

Your great mace reaches mininum attack delay at 20 skill. Training beyond this point gives accuracy and damage bonuses, but it is a point of diminishing returns. As such, it would have been a good idea to use the exp you invested in M&F levels 20-27 in something else, for instance more Armour, some Dodging or spellcasting skills (depending on if you raised dex or int, both of which are generally better than str).

While 27 Fighting is more efficient than 27 M&F, it would have still been better to get ~20 Fighting in order to get Dodging or spells, possibly getting more Fighting afterwards. While there isn't a cut-off point for Fighting like there is for a weapon's minimum attack delay, the higher the skill, the more exp you need to raise it further, so there are still diminishing returns.

The weapon choice is good. If you deliberately used enchant scrolls to receive one +5 and two +6 weapons, it would have been better to ignore the crushing mace to get a +9 weapon.

If you only got the gold dragon armour later in the game, it isn't a very good choice compared to simply enchanting a plate armour or other dragon armour. Not only is the EV/spellcasting penalty still significant to a heavy armour character, had you skilled differently, but by saving enchant armour scrolls you were playing an unnecessarily weak character prior to finding the GDA. If you found it early on, this doesn't apply and using it was possibly the optimal choice.

All this being said, your skills and item choices still look quite good, and so you would probably improve quickly by focusing on tactics instead of these things. If you play more heavy armour characters in the future, you should try to get either good EV or spells (charms, translocations) on them at some point. Since there usually isn't enough exp for both in a 3-rune game, the decision should be based on whether or not you have enough haste items - if you have enough haste from potions and wands, get EV, if not, getting enough charms skill to cast Haste as a spell is generally better. This is of course influenced by aptitude, stats and whether or not you find a spellbook with Haste.

The OP might not know enchant weapon scrolls are 100% reliable in .15+

Thanks for the input, and for the congratulations! I'll explain why I made those choices, then perhaps you can provide more insight. You've already helped me out, so maybe with some clarification, you'll be able to provide more specific insights. I know you said my choices look good, and focus on tactics would be the way to go from here, but I'd also like to make sure the reasons I made those choices are correct in the first place :shock:

First I'll say that most of these choices were made mid-game. At that point this particular run had revealed itself to be very stingy with magical gear. No decent branded weapons (by which I mean no branded great mauls; dire flails were around but I don't consider than an acceptable alternative unless there's absolutely nothing else). No decent armor with resistance (by which I mean, nothing stronger than scale mail). Very few enchant weapon scrolls (and if memory serves, I didn't even find my first brand weapon until the Vaults). Keep in mind, I'm not complaining here. I've seen enough games to know that sometimes the luck of the draw is not on your side; I'm only saying that it colored my strategy as I prepared for post-Lair-branches. With that in mind:

Weapons: Each of those great maces picked up at +3 or greater. Since I didn't know yet if I was going to try the Abyss or Hell, I decided to go for a balanced approach rather than putting all my scrolls into one weapon. The fire mace was actually supposed to be my freezing mace. When I accidentally rebranded it to fire, I decided to get a backup weapon. Eventually I found the crushing mace and put a few scrolls into it, as well as a couple into the holy weapon.

Armor: I went with the golden dragon armor because by the time I found it, I had decided not to invest in Dodge or spells. In addition, the only resistances I'd found was on rings (or on things like polearms), so the high AC of the armor, plus the fire and cold resistance suited my needs. On that note, is Dodge really that necessary or helpful? I wouldn't know. On that note, I watched my ever-increasing AC, and the still pretty-high amounts of damage I used to take sometimes, and that makes me wonder what a good goal is for AC. Should it just be going as high as possible, or is there some point where it doesn't really matter much anymore?

Skills: M&F was just kind of a toss-in, but I deliberately went for 27 in Fighting in order to compensate for the gargoyle's HP penalty. Crossbows I invested in just to reach minimum delay since I preferred that to trying to invest in Spellcasting and another spell skill - basically, it was for those situations where running up and whacking stuff was a really bad idea. Specifically, I had a bad experience with one hellion after another once and realized I needed a way to not get blasted by hellfire repeatedly while trying to kill them.

Freezing tends to be a bit better than flaming, but the difference is small. Thus I wouldn't have opted for a backup weapon just because of the rebranding.
Dire flails are very good weapons (they are essentially two-handed demon blades). Depending on the brand and how early in the game you are, enchanting one might not be a bad idea, just look at how popular demon weapons are and consider that the shield doesn't make a huge difference. If I had a dire flail and a few EW scrolls pre-Lair, for instance, which isn't a rare situation, I would definitely enchant the dire flail.

EV is very good. I'd say it's not quite as important for this type of character as Haste, but close (given that you'll always have a few potions of haste, even if they're not as many as you'd like and you don't have a wand). A character that can cast Haste will be more consistently powerful, but a character with good EV will obviously be stronger in the fights where it can afford to use Haste items.
For defences, a good rule of thumb is to aim for the highest EV+AC total. There are exceptions, of course (20/20 is better than 0/50), so keep in mind that raising a low value tends to be more useful (and more xp-efficient, as a seperate point) than improving an already high one - include Fighting skill in this consideration. AC is more useful against many weak attacks, EV is more useful against few strong ones, which makes a good score in both ideal and also explains why you frequently took high amounts of damage.
If your Dex is decent (high teens), you can get good EV (in the 20s, without +EV items) even in the heaviest armours. When training dodging, EV will initially remain the same, but once you pass a certain point it will start to go up quickly, so don't be discouraged by the returns of your first ~10 dodging levels. Similar principles apply to spell success rates.

Swapping rings in is quick, and while resistances on armour are convenient, rings usually suffice.

Once you reached the point where you had low dex and int, had enchant armour scrolls left and found a gold dragon hide, it was probably the correct choice to use it. Even if we take spells and EV out of the equation, though, your chances of surviving the game tend to be better if you start enchanting a plate armour early on.

Finally, I think getting crossbows was a good idea (though a strong ranged attack is slightly less important for Zin characters due to the Imprison ability). While there may not have been enough exp for 27 M&F, 27 Fighting, crossbows and Haste - 20 M&F, Fighting in the low 20s, crossbows and Haste would have been achievable within a 3-rune game, even more easily in plate armour.
I overlooked how high the Invocations skill was in my last post. I don't know how strong Recite is in new versions, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I generally don't raise Invocations far beyond a good Sanctuary success rate on a Zin character.

All good points; I was considering a different race/class combo, but with your suggestions, I think I'll make this run again with your advice and see how it works out.

Recite worked very well for me. Though I haven't used it in enough games to comment on it with any certainty, I can say that it seemed to help a lot, often disabling half a group of enemies as I drew them back to a choke point. It was instrumental to my success in dealing with Vault:5 as well, though I got a bit lucky there because through all of my stairdancing; it took a long time for a warden to show up (IIRC, they're the ones that lock doors and stairs). I was able to recite, disabling some enemies, pulling others up the stairs, and repeat several times.

Recite is also very nice since it doesn't consume piety, hunger, or MP; just breath.
