So it's been a very interesting run, playing around with some of the newer spells and generally slaughtering everything. Early game was pretty easy because I found the +4 ev ring on D:1 and +5 slaying ring on D:3, and the whole +30% hp from being an ogre is quite nice. Acquired a fire dragon armor in a d:10 bailey and found plenty of enchant armor scrolls throughout lair, so I had a +8 FDA for a while now too. Things I can't find for the life of me: Anything of MR - literally anything. Not a single source yet. I've been banished once, although the exit generated rather close to where I was, so I wasn't there long. Any good source of rC - I've been cold vulnerable ever since I put on the FDA, and while there is a robe of cold resistance, I can't give up ~20 armor to use it. I do have a ring of ice for emergencies, and while that isn't that terrible, I mostly hate the principle of it. I fought an ice fiend in an ice cave with no cold resistance, that was fun. Blade hands OP. But anyways, some MR, rC and rMut would make me very happy.

I've been experimenting with hydra form, and posted some of my thoughts on that in the hydra form thread here: viewtopic.php?p=198272#p198272. Overall, a pretty interesting form which is quite unique with the cleaving and short duration. I'd like to see a few tweaks like a less random duration, but overall pretty solid.

I've also played around with the new necromancy armor spell, Cigotuvi's Embrace. Again I like it, although it does have some restrictions with transmutations. You can't use it and stoneskin at the same time, you can't use statue form + embrace even if you don't have stoneskin on. You can't use stoneskin with hydra form period, and while you can use embrace + hydra form, any monster that hydraform eats (which is most of them) won't leave a corpse, so you have a lot less to make armor out of. These are all good design (although I might argue to let hydra form cast stoneskin) and I'm not complaining, just be aware of the restrictions and anti-synergies.

I'm looking forward to learning more transmutation/translocation damage spells: Irradiate, singularity, controlled blink. I can buy the akashic record (new highest level translocations spell, edit: now spelled correctly) in a shop, so I have access to the translocation spells, I don't think I've found irradiate yet. I've been considering learning crossbows because I have fairly good handcrossbow and arbelest randarts, but I think I might stick with throwing large rocks to save exp and pick up more of these spells. I'm going to end up being a rather smart ogre when all is said and done. I might do 15 runes to fit all these spells in.

Any suggestions on spells to add, and crossbows vs throwing? I'm holding both crossbows that I have, there's another randart arbelest for sale that I haven't bought yet. It probably wouldn't beat a +6 penetration rF/rElec one anyways.

Why ogre? It has minus aptitudes everywhere for a Tm, it must have been a struggle.

I've wanted to do a statue form ogre for a while, so when I needed to test hydra form I figured I could do both. Limited equipment slots means you lose less armor when using statue form/blade hands. Hydra melds everything, but hey, you had less there also, so that's not too bad. It's mostly for the +hp, but being able to throw large rocks is also really nice if you get far enough in to build up a stack. Forms that give +hp (hydra, statue, dragon) give even more hp to higher health races, so you can get some really absurd hp totals...It works out fairly well with hydra form healing, just remember that you have ~9 ac.

Honestly the early game was a breeze but that's mostly because a +5 slaying ring on d:3 is really really good. In general it would be tough. Having +3 fighting and -1 unarmed is imho better than 0 in both. You only need to reach around 5-6 unarmed before you can split up exp into fighting/unarmed and it's nearly as good. I.e., I'd rather have 6/6 than just having 9 unarmed and 0 fighting. Spellcasting and invocations are both 1 also, and armor/dodging are only -2 and -1...it isn't that bad, really, unless you're silly enough to learn a lot of magic like I can't seem to talk myself out of. This is actually the first ogre I created, I didn't kill any off, but again, that's the evasion/slaying rings talking.

Transmutations are pretty easy to get online with Chei (even on a troll), and everything dies once you get ice form/bladehands online.
Both of which mean that OgTm^Chei isn't all that bad if you have the patience to rest up a lot, because it'll be a while before you get dodging up and running simply due to how important getting the transmutations online is.

Personally, if you're going with chei on an ogre, I'd train up fighting/UC/dodging a bit before going in transmutations, but that's something where it's reasonable to go either way. I trained a bit more as a monk early on this game, looks like I had 10 fighting/12 UC and then trained transmutations until blade hands. You don't want to only be able to fight with blade hands when you find that hydra in early lair, and training that much fighting skill still let me get blade hands online at the end of lair/orc.

Really liked this character. Had a lot of usual circumstances, took forever to find MR, and I never found rMut despite doing 15 runes, checking loot rooms, doing a zig down to 10, etc. I probably could have gone a lot further in the zig, but didn't really want to. Don't think I got any cure mutation potions in there, either, which was another thing I was really looking for. Did pick up another experience potion, I think I had a total of 3 or 4 throughout the game. Felt extremely comfortable throughout the entire game, mostly due to ogre HP, which are just incredible. Healing's a bit of an issue, I never found a heal wounds wand, but the regeneration spell and much later on I found a regeneration amulet, which does decently enough. 400+ hp and an AC+EV total over 70 does wonders for character safety, even if statue form is slowed.

I eventually enchanted up a +12 GDA, which is a bit anti-synergy with statue form, but the spellcasting penalty was nearly negligible for two reasons: 1) 40 strength, and 2) my all important MR source was a ring with Wiz, MR++, and int+3. So really the only spells that were at poor casting rates were deflect missiles and controlled blink - anything else I could cast in GDA just fine. Ascended with 44ac/66ev, was trying for as much EV as possible, because an ogre with 66 ev is just hilarious. I actually had 45 ac without statue form (with stoneskin) from the GDA, but that's only because I picked up the placid magic mutation - at my regular spell power statue form was 47 ac. If I had ever bothered to ID staves, maybe I could have ascended with a staff of earth for those last few AC points ;)

Scary fights: Had only four times I ever really felt in danger:

- Zot:5, just before the orb chamber, before doing extended. Large pack of draconians, tentacled monstrosities, moths of wrath, etc. A ghost moth killed my mana, the floor's -ctele, and eventually berserked draconians wore my health down. Read some summoning scrolls and managed to back away far enough to kill just one or two followers and heal up.

- Antaeus: Stumbled into everyone's favorite gender neutral demonic snowball while there were still some additional monsters near him, and while they didn't deal much damage at all to me, antaeus managed to hit me for !!! damage at least once, and several other hard hits. Teleported away and had to make a second pass at him, which went a lot more smoothly.

- New Tomb: Definitely underestimated new tomb at first. Went to it after slime, before hell/pan, and got swamped by greater mummies who I could have easily killed...if they hadn't summoned a swarm of 5-8 emperor scorpions and stood far off in the distance where I couldn't smash them. Had to random teleport away. Landed in another bad fight, random teleported again....regen a bit, teleport some more...I probably ended up trying tomb:1 and random teleporting on it about 7 or so times before I gave up and went to pan.

- New Tomb 2: Back after Hell and Pan, I now had aura of abjuration online, which would have prevented the first tomb problem. All of the new mobs are very cool, although I still had the most trouble with mummy priests/greater mummies, mostly due to their summoning. The actual mistake here was as I was stair dancing the entrance into tomb:3, which was going great and is extremely easy...until you accidentally go down the stairs without casting statue form first. By the time it was my turn again on tomb:3, I lost 205 hp, with 72 hp remaining. In sight of 2-3 mummy priests, 3-4 greater mummies, a couple of the new ihoatap things (whatever their name is, they do a nasty miasma/negative breath attack) that I can't spell, and some popcorn. I was really not sure it was survivable at this point, or what the best next turn move is. At the time I felt like trying to get up the stairs would likely be fatal, but in hindsight I think I probably had about 75% odds to make it up the stairs. Not to say it was a safe option, but still. The things in melee range weren't too deadly, it was mostly 1-2 mummy priests, and a guardian/regular mummy if I recall. A commentator suggested step from time, which still scared me because it's not instant. You can either risk all 72 hp on one attempt to get up the stairs, or use step from time, thin the pack, but you'll also lose hp after using it. I did step from time, went down to around 40-50 hp, and still had a lot of monsters in sight, but a fair amount less than before. Took the stairs up, went down to 22 hp, but only dragged two mummy priests and a regular mummy with me. Practically nothing to this character, so I statue formed up and beat the crap out of them. Might have used a heal wounds potion, not sure. I had a rather limited supply of them most of the time due to never getting a wand.

Both of the tomb encounters would probably make a humorous tv replay, although the replay would probably go back up those stairs too quickly for you to develop the cold sweat appropriate for the situation. :P

Liked how much magic I was able to get online, although I never did end up going for Singularity, shatter or Tornado, all of which I had wanted for fun, but knew they wouldn't really have been worth it. Maybe I'll do a repeat Zigg runner and get Tornado/Singularity up on it, and see if the game crashes trying to figure out where to move monsters to :P

Good on ya, glad you gave it a try. I find ogres to be really enjoyable for whatever reason- probably the stupid amount of health. Although, Im not too reliable when it comes to "enjoyable", since I enjoy Ghouls. :)
