CIP/YASD DrBer - Advice needed

This young white draconian called Drake has a really nice set of items (his predecessor had much better but he was grey and he is dead), but I really am afraid to go down the orcish mines - the last time on the 4th level I found there some kind of fortress with a nice team of sorcerers. But now, even little band of priests is actually a threat. The main reason is, I presume, no fire resistance. Should I change a cloak to +2 cloak of fire resistance? Maybe explore the lair first or go down in the main dungeon? I never really managed to get so far in Crawl, so advice is really needed. Thanks in advance!

Generally the first seven level of Lair are easier than Orc. Start there. When you're level 16 or so, you can do Orc 1-3. Orc 4 is pretty tough. I generally wait until having done Swamp/Snake 1-4, Hive and much or all of the dungeon down to the Vaults entrance.

So that's what I was doing wrong - I always tried to do Orc Mines first, even though I was killed by electric eels in lair last time %)

If you have a +2 cloak with rF, it's better than the vanilla +2 cloak you're wearing now. Equipment with resistance is almost always preferable to equipment without.

Orc has been buffed in trunk- now there's guaranteed to be something 'fun' on Orc:4! ;)

You have a lot of unidentified wands. I recommend testing them on weak monsters at the first opportunity. Offensive wands that can penetrate crowds (cold, fire, draining, lightning) are one of a berserker's better options for quickly taking out pests like orc wizards and priests if they're giving you trouble.

Sure it is, but now I'm wearing +3 robe of Leapfrog {rElec SInv} :) Hopefully there won't be my Odin's ghost in Lair.

Yeah... So, I should probably rename the topic into YASD. I cleared the Lair, met my grey draconian ghost - maybe I shouldn't but I used Brothers in Arms and Berserker on him, so it was fairly easy. Then I decided to go down to D15. First I met Aizul who appeared to be pretty tough for my character. I teleported away, encountered a band of pretty strong skeletons, asked Trog to send some friendly beasty to help. At last, I cleared about a half of level, returned to Aizul, ate his corps.

It was obvious, that I came here too early. Every single monster could easily take away about 1/3 of my health in one hit. But what the heck, I don't want to go back! This was my greatest mistake. I pressed O and after a while I found a band of Ogres with Ogre mage as a leader. "WTF, where am I?" "You entered the Abyss" So, I walked here for a while, searching for exit (at first I even wnated to search for a rune - stupid me). Trog gave absolutely unuseful bow (for me, pure melee fighter!), I found a scroll of acquirement - which gave me pretty nice cloak (yeah, not robe - cloak)). Again I asked Trog for help - he sent me a nice companion, but you know, they always disappear after a short time.

Damn, I want my grey draconian... Draconian's of other colors aren't really good for melee.

The breath ability is pretty nice support for DrBe. Remember that it is there and soften up anything that looks remotely threatening with it. It is not incredible but it is usually comparable to shooting arrows at it first. If an enemy has no ranged attack you can wait for it to recharge while running away to get another shot in. If you use the breath weapon at the beginning of a fight it is usually recovered by the end of the fight so you can blast them while running away.

color doesn't matter much for a berserker, apts-wise. i've tried a few draconians lately (with a berserker or two in the lot) and they're still hard to get going. in fact, white is pretty bad (the breath helps you get rid of imps and that's about it). for grey, stealth's always good and stabbing's not bad for a berserker build, but without breath nor a resistance they barely feel like draconians at all. (their strongest point is actually being able to traverse deep water, which makes them merfolk-y.)

i'd like to keep playing to try green, red, mottled and purple, which seem fun, but hell, it takes some patience.

I had green once, he's kind of good... He can actually eat kobolds without risk of sickness or poisoning.

absolutego, I guess, I like him exactly for being potentially stealthy, stabby and merfolky :) And I guess I was lucky to get really strong Ice Dragon armor in the beginning of those game. Later I bought a very good randart robe on the bazaar. Unstealthy tanks in plate armor feels a bit wrong for my taste :roll: And Trog threw me about 15 weapons for slaughtering 3 and 1/2 of Ocish Mines levels...

Yeah, I tried it, but it works strangely. My shots always hit the wrong direction... I'll try it if I get him another time.

Sol, absolutely right :) You might say the same about a lot of things in Dungeon Crawl.
