I was very sad to see this character get mauled by a troll, because I had some nice kit. In addition to the stuff I was already carrying, I had found tons of shops in this game and was just trying to get enough gold to buy the +4 Robe of Night (MR +Inv SInv +Stealth}.

Ironically, it was partly the neat stuff I already had that helped me get killed. The +3 wizard hat of pondering {ponderous, MR Int+5 MP+10} made me slow, and the +6,+1 dagger of Suuluranwi {venom, -TELE rElec rC+ rN+ MR Int+2} gave great resistances but prevented blinking. I came down stairs right next to a troll, I couldn't get away or blink, and while unequipping the stuff I got mauled. Oh well.

Other stuff that was making me a lean mean conjuratin' machine:
- ring of wizardry
- ring of magical power
- amulet of the gourmand

Sigh. However, I hadn't found any other books other than the Book of Changes.

However, I think I learned a lot about playing a wizard, and how to use all the spells in the starting book. Not being a spriggan, Slow helps because you can blast away more as monsters take longer to close in, and of course it helps you escape as well. Hadn't used that much before. I used spammals a bit too but didn't use conjure flame much - that would have been handy a few times in retrospect, as when I uncovered that nest of kobolds. I also learned the benefits of spider form (speed) and ice form (rPois). I'll definitely give this build another run.

I would train fighting and stealth, if I were you. I don't really understand why you learned those combat forms when you were basically playing a conjurer.

I'm a bit confused - which combat forms? Did you mean "why you DIDN'T learn those combat forms? Are fighting and stealth essential for a conjurer?

I turned off stealth because it has a way of sucking XP that you then can't use for training magic. Also, I was planning to blast everything with really noisy spells anyway, so not much point in stealth.

Fighting: I guess I did neglect this a bit. I know it gives an HP bonus, but I was really trying to get my spells castable at high levels.

I thought my skill selection made sense, can you elaborate and educate me further?

I think he means ice and spider form. He's questioning why you would want spells that encourage mele brawling when you're playing something that relies on magical blasting for damage.

Being stealthy can mean the difference between waking up a group of tough monsters and dying instantly or managing to escape unnoticed. I personally like to raise stealth to 8, unless I'm playing a heavily armored fighter.

Focus on raise fighting to 5, as soon as possible. The HP boost is not insignificant and it gets harder to train skills the longer you take.

There's no reason to waste your spell slots on spider and ice form, unless you're a transmuter. You don't fight with your fists and you're not focusing on transmutations, so there was no need to learn those spells.

Ah I see.

I learned them because the book of changes was the only book I found, so I figured I might as well try then out - I can always purge them later.

The reason I learned them: spider form for swiftness / kiting, and ice form later when I realized it gave poison resistance. I didn't use them for melee.
