CIP: MDDK looking for late-game advice.

I've been trying to run Death Knights on and off since they were reintroduced, since I've always thought Yredelemnul was a fun god, and one of them has finally been successful. It's my first time getting a heavy armor character anywhere, and my second time getting past two runes on anything (the other is my first and only win, a three-rune MfIE). I have three runes. I've cleared the Vaults, Snake Pit, Shoals, Elven Halls, and the main dungeon. My entourage consists of no fewer than eight bone dragons, as well as two ghouls and an enslaved Margery (none of my enslaved souls have lasted very long, though). Unfortunately I feel that I'm at a bit of an impasse, for a number of reasons.

For one thing, I'm only level 21 because bone dragons ate all my experience. In retrospect I should have probably been more careful about that. That doesn't seem like a very good number for tackling Zot; I'm pretty sure my MfIE was well past that at this point in the game.

More importantly, I don't have a source of resist mutation, because I'm the dumbest person to have ever lived and thus decided to save my gold when I saw one in a bazaar way earlier in the game. I also have no potions of cure mutation; only one has ever been generated and I had to use it to clear Berserkitis and Teleportitis from a Zot trap that hit me a quite a while ago in spite of having prepared at least 9 traps and doors skill for just such a possibility. So if I go into Zot now and get mutated to hell, I'm pretty much not coming back out for anything but a desperate orb run. But if I DON'T go to Zot now and get mutated somewhere ELSE, I'll be even more screwed. I don't know which other branches, if any, have a good chance of generating a lot of potions and amulets; I was really kind of hoping that the Elven Halls would give me more than they did. I do have an Amulet of Statis and a Ring of Teleport Control, so a bad mutation won't instantly end the game, but I still don't like my odds. On the bright side, my helmet, gauntlets, and boots are all dead worthless, so no worries about losing those slots! (I have never had consistently worse luck with Scrolls of Acquirement before in my life.)

I'm also sadly reaching a point where Yredelemnul can't offer me much more than he already has. I mean, I still have my eight bone dragons, which is frankly ridiculous, but if those die out I don't think there's much of anywhere left to get piety or use his abilities except for the Draconian portion of Zot. I did save the Hive for a piety refill (since I got like five bee vaults just in the dungeon and lair), but that's about it. I hate the idea of abandoning him, since the main purpose of the character was to screw around with Yredelemnul and I've never provoked a god's wrath before, but if my current army gets wiped out I won't have much choice.

I'm not that poorly equipped, thankfully. I have some really high-AC body armor, fire resistance is no problem (RF++ from my cloak alone), and I have enough magic skill to cast Blink, Swiftness, and Haste through my armor, plus a ring of Teleport Control. I finally found a Demon Whip (+0 +4 of Flaming, which I'll probably go enchant further; I could hypothetically hold out for an unbranded one and vorpalize Freezing instead but I doubt it's worth it). But I'm still not all that confident in my fighting ability because, well, I've never really had to FIGHT anything. I can no longer remember a time when I had fewer than three Bone Dragons. Seriously, it's been ridiculous. Mennas died without me lifting a finger.

I've got some other goodies in my stash, including +10 plate mail and Maxwell's Patent Armor, but maxing reliable access to semicontrolled blink has seemed more important up to this point (I can practically do that through the plate mail anyway, but I'd still need to switch to my Staff of Wizardry for 100% reliability).

My gut instinct is to try the Slime Pits next. The arena suggests that my Bone Dragons could probably kill the Royal Jelly by themselves while I go take a nap somewhere, so that's a plus. I've never been in there before, though, and I'm worried that there might be something mutation-y. I do have an amulet of Resist Corrosion, plus most of my equipment that's worth a damn is immune to corrosion anyway. And a fourth rune would be a nice bonus anyway. Or would the slime walls obliterate all my Bone Dragons instantly? I have literally no clue; I've never even poked my head down there in past games.

Actually, I guess I could always do the Crypt whenever as well. I left it empty in case I needed to switch to The Shining One or something. Doing it now with all my bone dragons would probably be no problem, if that's my best option. It's probably my easiest source of loot, in any case.

The Hells, including the Vestibule, are a complete mystery to me. I don't know how dangerous they are, and I don't know what kind of equipment I'd need.

So where should I go from here? My main objectives being to not be obliterated by mutations, to make the best possible use of my bone dragon army, and to have a plan to fall back on in the rather likely event that all my bone dragons meet their maker before the end of the game.

Slime Pits are a possible option, but you are right to fear further mutation - Shining Eyes can spawn in there. They're pretty fragile, though, and I believe they need a clear LOS to mutate you, so the odds are your army will kill them before they can mess you up. Plus, there's the Royal Slime's treasure vault at the end, which may offer more of the gear you're looking for. It's also had spellbooks every time I've cleared it, so that's something else that could help you with that whole "What should I do if I lose my army?" contingency. I think the real danger here is that I don't know how much you'll be able to keep your undead slaves from the acid walls (which can really hurt if you don't keep away from them). Also consider that - according to the bots - acid is one of the few things bone dragons are NOT resistant to. If you do tackle the Slime Pit, don't clear every level - the Royal Jelly's vault is the only treasure in the branch, so just go downstairs to it as fast as you can.

Crypt is less risky for you. I've never seen it have as much loot as the Slime vault, but you won't have to worry about mutation or acid walls. I would try there next if I were you.

The one thing making me reluctant to do the Crypt is that it takes an emergency conversion to The Shining One off the table, which in turn would probably drastically lower my odds of doing anything in the Hells if I wanted to. (Is there even any loot down there? I have no clue). I'm not sure whether or not he's even my best option for conversion if it comes to that, but I don't know if I could get fast piety with anyone else. I mean, with mutation being arguably my biggest issue right now, Zin or even Jiyva might make more sense, but I don't know if it's mathematically possible to even reach high piety with Zin at this point. Not to mention the fact that I've relied so heavily on Yredelemnul's intervention up until now that I don't know if I could survive under a god without combat boosts of some kind.

The Hell branches have some loot, but most of it is on the bottom floor near where the demon lord will be. I would recommend not going there at all. The Hells are more of an extended game challenge... they're not for a character who is having doubts about their ability to clear Zot.

I would also recommend sticking with Yredelemnul, for the reasons you mentioned. I don't think you could get enough protection from Zin in time, and while I've never played with Jiyva, I do know he doesn't get a lot of respect on this forum and you would probably encounter other problems if you went with him.

I'm certainly not going to out-and-out abandon Yredelemnul right now, but if I lose all my dragons in the Slime Pits or early Zot, he'll be giving me absolutely nothing and I'll be in deep trouble on Zot 5. Clearing the Crypt under The Shining One could give me a second wind under that circumstance. You can pretty much max his piety in the Crypt alone, can't you? I've never worshiped him at a high level before, but there's sure to be something handy in there.

A Jiyva conversion would admittedly be nothing more than a desperate anti-mutation gambit for Zot 5 and the orb run if Yredelemnul gives out on me and no alternative presents itself. That's pretty much what the god is there for, as far as I can tell. I assume backtracking through the dungeon dissolving all the junk would get me to max piety with no effort.

TSO is a good god for the extended game, but if you want to stay pure to your death knight idea, why not?

My thoughts:
Yred is a great god for a 5 rune win. Try for that, then go for 15 with your next mage.
IIRC the dragons don't follow you into portals so do not try hell or pan.
They handle mummies just great, so crypt is easy if you let them heal up between fights.
A tip for allies in slime is to take only small groups at a time. Use teleports and recall so they don't just get killed by the walls.

The fact that one can hypothetically clear Zot without a god doesn't necessarily mean that I personally can do it, especially with my first ever non-caster, and even more especially if I wind up with slow movement, berserkitis, teleportitis, and probably a bunch of other terrible mutations I've never even heard of, which is a pretty real possibility if the Slime Pits and/or Crypt doesn't give me some protection. I may just try to power through it with Pain Mirror even if I lose all my pets just for thematic purposes though, depending on how things go. Dying with four or five runes wouldn't be that terrible anyway, since I've never had more than three before.

Yeah, I have too many sources of reliable teleportation for Maxwell's armor to be terribly appealing. Especially since I already have a suit of +10 plate mail I'm free to use if I want a bit more AC. I briefly considered using it in the Slime Pits so I could have conservation and resist corrosion at the same time, but then I came to my senses.

I never considered the portal thing. I guess I assumed that portal vaults were special in that regard, but maybe not. Then again, the entrance to Zot is technically a portal too, isn't it?

This also brings to mind a question about ally AI in the slime pit. If you give them the "wait here" command where they just wander around in a broad area, are they smart enough not to smash into walls until they kill themselves? I'm sure they'd gladly follow me to their deaths if I ordered them all to gather around me at the same time, but I don't know what their natural inclination is when they're on their own. I'd like to have them available on the level for an emergency recall if possible, especially if I have to deal with Shining Eyes or anything else that might be stronger than I can deal with on my own.

That's unfortunate. I doubt I have much of a chance of clearing it without my trusty bone dragons, at least with my current equipment. I guess that leaves me with not much else to do but to hit the Crypt and possibly Tomb and hope for some good loot while they're still alive (or as alive as they're going to get).

Yes, as Minmay says, the AI is bad.
However, if you can get a really nice path directly to each set of downstairs (either dig, or magic map + controlled teleport) and take down only a few (about 3?) at a time, then it's perfectly possible. Keep them close: If they wander off they'll be toast!

I had a thread about this! Here were my experiences (below). I think I took fewer dragons than I had because (a) you don't want to lose them all if things go wrong; and (b) IIRC the criterion for Yred to give you more depends on how many pets you have on the current level. IIRC, I could take them to Zot but not into the hells. It's been a while, so I forgot most of the details.

Damn. I don't think I can do the Tomb safely, even with my dragons. Mummy priests do a horrifying amount of unavoidable damage, and teleport control is disabled. I cleared the first floor mostly by telling my dragons to kill things while I hid behind corners, but the stairs down lead dumped us in the middle of a whole ring of enemies. Only one was a priest, but it would be easy for more things to come from offscreen, and in an emergency I might have had to leave my pets behind, which would have been terrible. I think I'll have to give up on it unless I suddenly get a bunch of RN+ artifacts out of nowhere.

On the bright side, Crypts 5 yielded two potions of cure mutation, so that gives me a bit of leeway. No worthwhile equipment, though. I also lost three precious bone dragons and an enslaved Norris offscreen on the way down...I guess it must have been a Curse Skull, not that I have any way of knowing for sure. So now I "only" have 5. Thus continues my perfect streak of never once having an enslaved soul survive two floors. (I think I may have jinxed myself when I had to put down my very first successful enslave ever--on any character--when I accidentally use-ID'd a Scroll of Immolation in the Shoals. I'm lucky the rest of my army didn't turn on me and tear me to shreds in a single turn.)

I guess I'll go see if the Slime Pits are any more feasible than the Tomb, but to be honest I have my doubts given my minion-dependance.

EDIT: Oh god why did nobody tell me the Royal Jelly was so fast. I'm going to need to find a path to get my dragons down here.
EDIT AGAIN: Yaaaaay! A Slimy Rune of Zot, an Amulet of Resist Mutation, and two Rods of Destruction. Good times. I only lost one bone dragon, too. Drain Life really helped mop things up quickly. Unfortunately I picked up the slow movement mutation somewhere along the line (the other two mutations I got were mapping and stiff muscles, miraculously enough). I guess there's nothing left to do now but raid the Hive for food (and new dragons, hopefully) and then head to Zot.

Well, I did try to warn you about the need to take a few of your pets into slime, so well done for surviving!
It looks like you should clear Zot next, then I'd try tomb again.

There are 2 nasty ambushes. ;-)
I didn't have much problem with lots of bone dragon pets; although I was quite torment resistant.
You are letting them heal up fully between each fight, right?
If Yred gives you ghouls, try to make them pick up firey swords, even if that involves big detours.
The easiest way is if you have lots of magic skills to necromutate, since that negates the worst of the curses. If not, then your main task is to stay alive and recall injured dragons to heal. Another useful thing is to soften them up, then let your dragons finish it. I'd also like to try it with silence. :-)

I was working on Zot 5 last night. The orb vault is distressingly empty. I've seen maybe 5-6 Orb Guardians, one Lich, and one Orange Statue total in the entire front half. And I only met two Orbs of Fire on the way down. So there's pretty much a 95% chance that I'm going to turn a corner and see five Orbs of Fire in one of the rear chambers.

I don't think my dragons were ever in any risk in Tombs 1. Only I was. Though in retrospect I think I mis-attributed about three Sphinxes worth of smite damage to a single Mummy Priest, so it might not be quite as bad as I thought. I'm still worried, though. I have no sources of negative energy resistance except two rings, which means I either lose all my other resistances except rF++ and possibly rElec (including MR). And Torment would still deal a ton of damage. Though do you even need any resistances other than rN in the Tomb?

As for Necromutation...are you insane? I'm a 4-rune heavy-armor Mountain Dwarf Death Knight. My Necromancy skill is, like, 6. And only because I grabbed Regeneration just before hitting Zot.

I actually completely forgot that Ghouls are supposed to wield weapons. Pickup settings have been set to "ally-dropped" the whole game, so they've just been using whatever junk they came with. I think I have at most one ghoul at the moment, though (plus I'm back up to 5 bone dragons).

On the subject of ally equipment, I just remembered that Norris had a pitted buckler when I enslaved him. He died offscreen and I never got a chance to pick it up. I guess there's like a one in a million chance it's loaded with negative energy resistance if I can find it.
