YASD - DSTm -- Ettins Hit Harder Than I Thought

I... I'm speechless.

Got me a Demonspawn Transmuter all the way up to CL20, DL20. Everything was going just fine until I met a Giant Orange Brain, who summoned a bunch of crap including an Ettin Zombie.

I was so used to just mowing everything down with Blade Hands that I didn't realize this guy could hit me for like 50 damage a round, and didn't notice that he was, in fact, doing so. Stupidly got trapped in a dead-end and then stupidly tried a plain ol' Blink when I could have just used a scroll. I could literally have walked away from this fight.

Man, it's depressing to lose a character after 12 hours. Maybe I'm done with this game for a while :-/

Yeah, ettins got beefed up. You can get hit for more like 100 (assuming that each of their weapons tags you). They have around the same hit points though, so just be careful about closing on them unless you have really high shield/AC/evasion.

I often feel this way, too. And then I find myself playing again the next day. There's just something about this game...

Damn. Not fun! If it helps, I got killed recently by an Ettin Skeleton in very similar circumstances. They definitely gots da buff.

I'm the same when I learn a particularly harsh lesson, too. It can take days to come back having just thrown away half a day's work on something that was, in retrospect, totally avoidable.

My record is a week, after my DDNe went toe to toe with a Sun Demon and got sucked into the "just one more hit and it'll go down" trap. The worst part? It was summoned by Frances - not only did I not need to fight it, I wouldn't even have got XP if I hadn't been killed!

Ah, I feel a little better, then -- I'd somehow thought of Ettins as roughly as tough as slightly tougher than Cyclopses, which were just popcorn for me.

And yeah -- these guys were also summons. The only reason I didn't just leave was that they were kind of in the way of where I wanted to go next. Sheesh.

Any advice for another fun melee build? I've done the Tm thing to death :/

Ah! MfCr was my first win! I've also made it with a SpBe and a DEWz.

Maybe TrMo or GhMo of Kiku? Hm... or maybe I should give mummies a chance. Sometimes I seem to do better with fragile builds; I'm not quite as likely to get careless...
