He used a wand of lightning.... strong wands like this are basically instant death when they spawn on d2 or 3.

I'm sure everyone's been subject to an unfortunate, fatal wand discharging from a goblin, but the added indignity of a wand wielding goblin with delusions of wizardry? That's something special. ;)
