Just wanted to share this fun fact.

I had two friendly wandering mushrooms when I encountered Dowan and his sister. He was carrying a wand of polymorph, turned me into a porcupine, and one of my mushrooms into a shambling mangrove... This second polymorph seems not to end :D
I'm on D:5 with this awesome ally :mrgreen:

That's awesome man! A shambling horror even seems so thematically appropriate for an Octopode. You should try leaving that wand around other wand using enemies and see if you can create more super allies. I remember when I was playing Beogh, and a bunch of my followers stepped on Zot traps. I ended up with a greater Sphinx, a Quicksilver Dragon, several Draconians, and a poor Death Yak. Loved that yak. Let me know how the shambling horror plays, I may have to attempt to manufacture this extraordinary occurrence.

In .15 monsters no longer pick up items you have seen, so that would not work.. I was thinking of ways to scumm this, but can't think of anything that would not be extremely tedious. Maybe if you find a monster that has polymorph wand you could leave him alive and come back with allies later. That is only if you can keep him from zapping all his charges on you and keeping your allies from killing him. Getting more than one super mutant is probably too hard, but getting one intentionally might be plausible.

Spells like teleport other, paralyze or confuse could be used to prevent further unwanted zapping. Then leave the level asap.

Confuse will just make him turbo-empty the wand at thin air. The others might work, could be fun to do once or twice.

Reminds me of that guy who played a djinn (back when they were around) and found a fire crab. Didn't bother enslaving or anything, just let his new (hostile) pet crab follow him around, making the surrounding area into a furnace. Apparently it worked pretty well for a while.
