The big discovery for me was the sheer power of the blowgun (with the humble poison needle). Normally seeing a single sleeping yak is horrible for a non-invis, non-hexing stealth guy - you know there's a pack and if any of them spot you they yell to bring everyone on you. But they never yell when a needle (doesn't matter which) wakes them up. This means you can silently pull them one by one so long as you pass the stealth check once - much easier than passing it several times to sneak up on them in the open. Confusion needles were a life saver when I saw Fannar next to a yeller pack: wake him up with confusion, rain poison on him while he wanders away from the yellers, walk away and wait for him to die.

My skills are a little weird - I may die to bad EXP distribution later on (especially as the main Dungeon is shortened). But a D:2 Trog altar has been generous on me thus far - I get amazing Oh No buttons for zero EXP expenditure. Heck, I wouldn't have dared spread myself this thin if it wasn't for early Trog and being a Kobold. Here in the midgame, I enjoy being a ranged machine with blowgun, sling, crossbow and rods. Love how the new skill synergy system means I get token sling skill for free.

Edit: Trog just gifted me a +9 qBlade. On Lair:6.
