The Necronomicon belongs in the trash. It is almost entirely useless for your character, and also every other character you could possibly have by this point in the game. None of the spells in it are particularly likely to be useful before you've already won.

A book of necromancy is a nice find, but not a super-exciting find. Animate Skeleton is a spell you probably want to pick up immediately, since you can use it without any actual training and a collection of disposable skeletons is very useful to have handy. Regeneration will probably earn a place on your spell list later, although it probably isn't worth diverting xp towards it now when you have your defenses to train up and more spell power for your Fireball. The others might be worth grabbing if later drops take you that way, but probably are less desirable than at least a couple of Vehumet's upcoming gifts.

*eventually* learning spells like borgs and haunt and death's door is a good addition for a FE. But that's *after* you've got:

"blasty" stuff online to your satisfaction
defenses trained (that is probably fighting and dodging, and possibly sheilds in your case)
Any lower-to-mid level untility spells you want online (preferably blink, rMsl, Haste, several other possibilities)
Probably some minor investment in a melee weapon to reserve your mana fights which might be challenging

By which time you might just be ready to win. However if by that time you're not, Necronomicon has some spells which can save your butt, provided you are willing to invest enough XP in them to get it working.

But yes, definitely memorize animate skeleton, for a 0 investment, 1 MP spell, that you can turn into blockers and inner flame targets, it's highly worth it.

Well this character will have a lot of Int, so getting Borg online is probably not unimaginable even in a 3 runes game and Borg is quite good.

'This character' hasn't even found the entrance to Lair yet. Any plan that involves high-level magic that depends on a non-primary magic skill is going to be a bad plan for any such character. Diverting skill training to make use of the Necronomicon is a very bad idea for absolutely any character at this point in the game.

Basically I think Siegurt and KL are largely agreeing but with different points of emphasis. Don't throw that Necronomicon into lava or anything, just put it on the ground (or in temple if you are paranoid) and don't think about it for a long time. It may turn out to be useful a lot later, or maybe not, it really depends on how your character develops much later, which in turn should depend on stuff you can't really predict right now.

Anyway, in terms of immediate suggestions: Use those scrolls of identify to identify your stuff, including that wand of teleportation. Learn animate skeleton, and train dodging and only dodging until EV is around 20. Consider throwing some points into dex. Don't forget you have those 4 potions of haste if you run into a really nasty situation.

A little later on you can train a bit of necromancy and charms and get regeneration and can also consider upgrading animate skeleton to animate dead.

Good advice all, thanks!

I learned the Animate Skeleton and it allowed me to clear a Bailey on the next level. My horde of skeleton orcs held back and weakened the enemies just enough that I didn't have to flee. Vehumet granted me Mephitic Cloud, and I'm going to get Inner Flame, this plus skellies should be a solid combo for the early levels.

Managed to clear Lair, Orc, Spider and dove to D:16 turning back at the entrance of Depths. Not sure which branch to explore next. Unfortunately all my newbie mucking around with skills has left Conj and Fire somewhat underdeveloped for Firestorm, so I'm trying to train that ASAP.

I'd do Shoals next. Use invisibility on the last level. You must have better armour somewhere than that -1 leather. If you really want to use that shield, get 15 Shields skill (I suppose no ego bucklers are around). That weapon is nice, train more weapon skill. There's no hurry for Fire Storm.

I have some +2 robes of MR, cold and fire resist respectively, it's not much but is better than that -1 randart which I was wearing only for the needed rPois in Spider's Nest.

I underestimated the amount of effort to get a no-fails medium shield, rN is pointless at this stage so I'm probably going to switch to my egoless +2 buckler. But I do have 10 shields skill already so I'm undecided on that. Probably carry both and see which feels safer.

I do have invis in a spellbook in my stash, I'll go memorize that and let you all know how it turns out!

A medium shield is usually worth it for a lot of characters at some point, it's just that that point is typically pretty late in the game because there's a lot of things that are worth more. If you've already invested some in it, I'd say finish it off at some point, but don't rush it. Assuming you're a few levels past the 17 when you posted, it may be getting towards that point. You might want to finish up training long blades for the demon blade first, though.

Shoals was cleared easily, except for one sticky spot where I went haste to escape while invis and I didn't realize that you can actively gain more contam if you spend time while hasted and invis. Got a -2 penalty to int, on one hand it was an unnecessary newbie mistake, on the other hand, it could have been worse, and now I have learned not to mix haste and invis. I do have one potion of cure mutation but I'm saving it until I get a really crippling mutation. I've found the lajatang of order, (+7, silver, rMut) so I'm considering using that while fighting baddies that can give me mutations.

Considering that I can't mix Haste and Invis, I'm a little underwhelmed by Invis, so I'm considering swapping it out for another spell.

Still no rCorr, so no choice but on to vaults 1-4.

With no rCorr I could not survive 6 turns of standing flatfooted with no EV. How could you remember all these rules... goddammit all to hell.

When you start a new game (next year, next month, next week or tomorrow) keep in mind that the slime pits are much harder than the other lair branches.

Amulet switching is at least very useful if not vital here. Besides a source of rC+ vs azure jellies I like to have the following items:

  • amulet of rCorr as standard amulet - prevents from acid damage
  • amulet of rMut vs shining eyes - prevents from malmutations
  • amulet of clarity vs golden eyes - prevents from confusion
  • amulet of stasis vs orb of eyes / giant eyeballs - prevents from paralysis
Note that high magic resistance will often protect you from confusion or paralysis but not from paralysis by giant eyeballs afaik.

I don't understand why you even went to slime in the first place. If all you want is your first win, then it's simple - avoid Slime, Crypt, Elf, Abyss, Pandemonium and Hells. Your problem was not with your amulets, the problem was that you were there too early.

Even experienced players don't go there until after Vaults, and often after crypt/enchanted forest/ elf because those are often considered easier branches (depending on your equipment).

But I understand temptation was too great and you wanted to try out your lajatang of silver and rMut.

I wasn't tempted to do anything - I wasn't desperately lacking any gear and I had all the spells I needed for endgame. I literally thought that was the right order of difficulty. I'd facerolled all over lair, orc, D:15, spider, shoals, vaults1-4, and thought that slime was ok at that point.

Skyspire is right, I should not have been in there so early with a blasty character like that. There's a huge risk of waking up at least 2 of the 3 types of lethal risks without being able to take them down instantly, at which point it's checkmate no matter how many amulets were in my backpack.

On hindsight I should have done depths, then vaults 5 then zot and skipped slime altogether. Now I know why there's a giant pile of treasure at the bottom (peeked in there in wizmode once)

Return to YASD! YAVP! and characters in progress too
