CIP: SpEn of Makhleb

Hi all! first post ever :)

I have a level 15 SpEn and would like to hear suggestions/thoughts on my current equipment/skills. I have been roughly following Hugg's SpEn guide.
Have accumulated junk in my inventory and have a couple of unique robes but I'm not sure waht's my best choice of gear at this point of the game.
Same for the weapon...
BTW, I just found a +7 unique fire dragon armor in a shop (the +7 fire dragon armour "Iplid" {rF++ rC- Dam+5}) and was wondering if it made any sense to go for it.
I have never completed an ascension any my characters usually die in YASD shortly after clearing Lair and Orc.

EDIT: Just found a +1 hat of intelligence (INT+3)

My thoughts:

I find -Tele gets me killed, so I avoid those items generally.
Electric is probably a much better brand than cold on short blades, although the dagger does get the extra stabbing bonus.
I use my un-ID wands and scrolls usually instantly to figure out what they are.
I find rings of fire and ice are useless.
Branching into charms and TLoc is going to be very helpful and you seem to have some books with those spells. I consider them the most universally helpful schools of magic.

it takes 5 aut to take off a ring, if teleporting 5 aut later is likely to kill you then you have some serious problems with your tactics that are not likely to be helped by avoiding a -tele ring

Well I take it that the rest of the advice was at least passable then. I wonder if it was a freak death or a very early death when I decided to avoid -tele gear. There's nothing that could kill in less than a turn besides hasted or naturally fast enemies right? Or maybe I'm just not thinking properly about the differences between switching different gear slots. Do they all take less than a turn except body armour?

Also, for the OP this is not a character that would want fire dragon armour. The robe you have looks good for this guy, but if you want some AC then I think the light dragon armours (steam, mottled, maybe swamp), or troll leather might be better when enchanted up

If you get a lot of slaying, transitioning a SpEn into a character that beats things down quickly works pretty well, especially if you pick up a quick blade. That fire dragon armour might be excellent for that route, so long as you're willing to dump your remaining stat points into Str (you really don't want to be completely dependent on that +Str ring) and the extra spell skill levels you'll need to be able to cast spells.

Admittedly, I haven't done this plan in anything heavier than swamp dragon armour. (and even that was before the encumbrance change)

I got rElec before getting in there, but I was not ready anyway.
It was my fault to try and go kill him.
I tried to approach from a blind spot but whan I turned the corner he was awake. Then all want in "a flash".

What would be the a good strategy for a SpEn in Snake Pit?
Nagas see invisible, so I had to resort to kiting and trying to confuse them...

I've had two games with a good quick blade and slaying, so I relied mainly on melee and Metabolic Englaciation, with a smattering of Haste. (this was prior to 0.14, but I imagine it would work fine in the new Snake too)

I've had a few games where I cast Enslavement on a bunch of MR-susceptible snakes (and sometimes Haste too!) and use them to beat down the bigger ones. With a few tries and high spell power, you can even enslave the naga warriors, which deliver quite a beatdown.

My first rune ever was a serpentine rune, acquired by laboriously sticking Confuse to the naga warriors and kiting the greater naga with Fulminant Prism.

If you really want to go blasty with a SpEn, I find Freezing Cloud to be an extremely powerful spell, and a very useful direction to go if you have other good ice and air spells (e.g. Ozocubu's armor, Metabolic Englaciation, Silence, and Deflect Missiles). Sticky Flame is a nice spell too.

I imagine there are ways to ninja the rune; I've never really built a SpEn that way (I generally prefer the magic aspect of the enchanter, rather than the fact they play ninja well) so I can't offer any strategies for that.
